Plan How You Will Evolve

Are you a Manager or a Leader? Take the Quiz: Is it more important to focus more on the long term or the short term?

Is it more important to “care” about people or to “care” about the results that are achieved? Is it more important for your team to genuinely like you or to respect you?

How do you feel when subordinates achieve great things or when higher-level leadership recognizes or acknowledges them? How do you cascade information? Do you hold back information strategically or do you share everything openly (except confidential company information)? Which is more important, process or results? Who is accountable if an initiative fails? You, the person in charge of execution, the whole team or someone else? Who is accountable if you succeed? How many subordinates have you personaly developed?

Manager v. Leader Situation: The existing quarterly bonus policy states that bonus may be withheld if restaurant quarterly voids exceed X%. The policy has been in place for 1 ½ years, but bonuses have never been withheld based on excessive voids. The quarter has just closed and the new CFO that has come on board instructs that bonuses earned in the prior quarter will be withheld based on the policy, denying 37 GMs and 5 DMs their expected bonus. The CFO argues that the policy clearly states the parameters for earning bonus and all he’s doing is enforcing the policy. You’ve been directed to deliver the news to your Operations team.
