ighteen months ago a group of independent distributors of safety equipment decided to become members of the Safety HQ brand. They had all recognised a dire and potentially dangerous lack of knowledge amongst the major players. By joining forces they boosted their buying and brand power, improved their ability to serve national and international organisations and expanded their already impressive knowledge networks. Now represented in 24 stores across Australia, Safety HQ has become the go-to network for all of your on-site safety needs, no matter the size of your business or its industry. “We are individually owned so we have always had to be passionate about safety, and about the products we offer,” says Paul Chaffey, Director and owner since 2002 of Taylor Safety Equipment (a 700-square-metre superstore) in Toowoomba. “Some of the big chains simply don’t try too hard in that regard.” With safety regulations constantly changing across industries, and new and improved products frequently being released, it takes serious effort to keep track of official and recommended workplace requirements. tHe key to workPlace safety As at March 2016, 22 workers have been killed in Australian workplaces. While this may seem like a high number, based on previous year’s statistics we can expect another 170 will be killed before Christmas. It’s a sobering thought. Death at work is not acceptable and everyone has a part to play in ensuring their workplace is safe. The failure to manage risks arising from plant and equipment is still a significant cause of serious injury and fatalities in Australia. The recent introduction of WHS laws is aimed at reducing the number of workplace injuries and deaths, and the WHS’ supporting Codes of Practice around Managing Electrical Risks, Confined Spaces and Managing Risks of Plant all refer to use of safety padlocks as best practice during de-energising and isolation procedures.
