BRUGES ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE

Bruges is a city that goes straight to your heart. Medieval mystery, unembarrassed Burgundian and has been a world city for ages.

Go and explore the mysterious ‘reien’ (canals), the veins of the city, and immerse yourself in the Golden Age of Bruges.

Since centuries, the Bruges canals connect the city to the sea, a guarantee for wealth and prosperity. International tradespeople built Bruges to become one of the largest Hanseatic cities. In the 15th century, the city flourished like never before. Large parts of the medieval patrimony remained almost intact. It is only logical that the entire city centre was recognised as world heritage by the UNESCO.

Older tourists, holidaymakers with a temporary or permanent disability or people who need extra comfort or care can visit Bruges without a care in the world. This brochure was written in cooperation with Inter and Visit Bruges. It offers all the necessary information to prepare a trip to Bruges.

HOW SHOULD YOU USE THIS BROCHURE?

We created an attractive route with a minimum of obstacles. There are a lot of cobblestones in the centre of Bruges, that is a fact. This walk is largely on cobblestones, but usually they are flat and evenly laid. Rounded cobblestones were avoided to the greatest extent. The handy removable map with descriptions tells you exactly which route you should take to avoid obstacles. Every aspect of an accessible tourist visit to Bruges was mapped out. This brochure provides information about museums and attractions, pubs, restaurants, public toilets and tourist information offices. The numbers on the map refer to more detailed information in the brochure itself. You can also read all about accessible accommodation, care, tools, transport and parking.

BRUGES ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE

Our information is based on objective expert inspections on the spot. For more detailed information about each building or site, you can view the detailed report on www.toevla.be (available in Dutch only). Some of the locations were added based on tips and good experiences of people with disabilities. We do not claim that all listed initiatives are autonomously wheelchair accessible. We made a selection of the more accessible businesses and facilities in Bruges. On the basis of the descriptions, you can decide for yourself which locations are more or less suitable or which preparations you can make to make it work.

5

VISIT & EXPERIENCE The detailed descriptions show to what degree a certain attraction or parts of the attraction are accessible to visitors with limited mobility. They also indicate which obstacles you can encounter or where you might possibly need a helping hand. If an attraction or museum has amenities for visitors with a visual or learning disability, this is also stated and indicated by means of the following headings:

Facilities for visitors with limited mobility

Restaurants, cafés and public toilets Using the thumb system for the most important measurement data and the detailed pictures of the adapted toilets you can decide if a cafe, restaurant or toilet is suitable for you. Because of continuous changes in restaurants, cafes and toilets, it is possible that some information may be out of date. We therefore recommend you contact the business before your visit. If you note that a location has been moved, renovated or closed, you can notify this fact to Inter at [email protected] or +32 50 40 73 73.

Sint-Salvatorskathedraal

Bruges’ oldest parish church (12th-15th century) has amongst its treasures a rood screen with organ, medieval tombs, Brussels tapestries and a rich collection of Flemish paintings (14th-18th century). The treasury of the cathedral houses paintings by Flemish Primitives like Dirk Bouts and Hugo van der Goes. The nave of the church is easily accessible via a

Oud Sint-Jan

Whoever enters the Old St. John site will certainly admire the tangible presence of the rich history of Bruges. Here was one of Europe’s earliest hospitals. Later, the nineteenth-century St. John’s Hospital was also built here with its large, communal wards. These spaces were restored after the closure of the hospital and are now part of the conference and events centre Old St. John Site. They are particularly suitable for the organisation of meetings and conferences, fairs, events and all kinds of celebrations. The site has several entrances which are not all equally accessible. The access from the Mariastraat is the most accessible. No special parking spaces

BRUGES ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE

are available. You may need some help to open the door at the main entrance of the event centre and at the slope of the entrance via the Mariastraat. The side entrance to the catering business is perfectly usable. Most areas inside are easily accessible. There are two toilets fitted with grab rails, but the space in the toilet is narrow and the free space next to the toilet bowl is 70 and 73 cm respectively. Sint-Janshospitaal

In St. John’s Hospital, worth more than eight centuries of history, pilgrims, travellers and the sick were cared for by sisters and brothers. The medieval wards and the accompanying church and chapel house an impressive collection of archives, art works, medical instruments and six works by Hans Memling. To visit: the Diksmuide attic, the old dormitory and adjacent guardian room and pharmacy. The corridor in which the pharmacy is located can be entered through the herb garden. You can get up to the entrance of the pharmacy and watch from the corridor into the pharmacy, but the pharmacy cannot be entered by wheelchair user due to the two steps. The museum is quite easily accessible for wheelchair users. You may need some help here and there on the somewhat steep slopes or when opening

10

a heavy door. Not all, but most rooms are accessible. 1 hall through a small platform lift, the other rooms by a sufficiently large lift. The buttons on the elevator have relief indications for people with visual impairments. The exhibited material is good to visit for a wheelchair user. In the adapted toilet you may need help because of the narrow space and incorrect placement of the grab rail. The museum has two ‘Plus Cases’ which were developed specifically for children with hearing and visual impairments. That way, they can explore the museum at their own pace. Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk

The 115.5 meter high brick tower of the Church of Our Lady illustrates the craftsmanship of Bruges builders. The church displays a valuable art collection: the world-famous ‘Madonna and Child’ by Michelangelo, countless paintings, 13th-century painted sepulchres and the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold. Good to know: the church is currently still undergoing large-scale restoration works which means the church is only partially accessible and

5

many works of art are protected. The choir was restored in 2015 and the valuable church interior can be admired again in all its splendour. The nave of the church is easily accessible, you could need some help for a slope of 10% in the church. Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk Mariastraat, 8000 Bruges +32 50 44 87 43 www.museabrugge.be [email protected]

Stadshallen and Belfort

Bruges Belfry and Halls are a protected monument and recognized as world heritage. Bruges’ most important tower stands 83 meters tall and houses a carillon with 47 silver-toned bells. In the reception area, visitors get the chance to learn a lot on the history and function of the Bruges belfry, which is protected as world heritage. Within the Stadshallen you can admire a fantastic collection of world-famous graphic art and sculptures of the famous artist Dalí. Exhibitions and other events also take place here.

The access path and yard are made of flat cobblestones. The Garemijnzaal is the easiest to reach and access. The rooms on the first floor are accessible by lift, but help may be needed on some steeper slopes on the route and at the narrower stretch upon exiting the elevator on the first floor. The adapted toilet in the courtyard is easily accessible. The other adapted toilets are too small. In front of the building on the market square you will find a tactile model with information in Braille. Hear the romantic story of Jacob, an apprentice of Jan van Eyck, and discover the interactive exhibition space with touchscreens, the panoramic view of the Market and the Duvelorium Grand Beer Cafe, the only themed Duvel pub in the world. You get in through an alternative entrance with lift. The story follows a specific route. A wheelchair user has to leave this route at various times in order to take the lift. Historium provides guidance to find your way on the alternative route. The floor is paved here and there, but the cobblestones are quite

Basiliek van het Heilig Bloed

The double church, dedicated to Our Lady and St Basil in the 12th century and basilica since 1923, consists of a lower church which has preserved its Romanesque character and a neo-Gothic decorated upper church. The relic of the Holy Blood is stored in the upper church. The completely refurbished treasury with numerous valuable works of art is also worth a visit. The lower church can be reached without crossing any thresholds, but the circulation space at the entrance is limited and the door is quite heavy. Some small areas can be accessed via a steep ramp. There is an elevator to take you to the upper church and treasury (use the

9

speaker to call for someone to help you with the elevator). Some manoeuvring may be required to drive in and out of the elevator. The double doors to the upper church is quite heavy to open. On the first floor there are narrower, but useful passages. In the halls there is sufficient space to circulate. The material exhibited in the treasury is more difficult to see for a wheelchair user. Stadhuis

Bruges’ City Hall dates back to 1376 and is one of the oldest in the Low Countries. This is the place where the city has been governed for more than 600 years. An absolute must is the Gothic Hall, which is a magnificent work of art with its murals from around 1900 and its vault. The adjacent historic hall with original documents and works of art tells the history of the city council. On the ground floor, a free multimedia exhibition illustrates the evolution of the Burg.

BRUGES ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE

There are two special parking places on the Burg. The access path consists of flat cobblestones. The entrance, counter and halls of City Hall are easily accessible. A wheelchair user will probably need help at the lift to keep the doors open and operate the buttons (please ask for help at the reception). There is no adapted toilet. Audio guides are available. Brugse Vrije

From this manor, whose façade dates from 1722-1727, the Bruges countryside was controlled. From 1795 to 1984, this building served as court building. Today it houses, among others, the City Archives and it is the repository of the written memory of the city. The house has an old assize court and a renaissance hall with a 16th century monumental mantelpiece in wood, marble and alabaster made by Lanceloot Blondeel. There are two special parking places on the Burg. The access path consists of flat cobblestones. The entrance is difficult to access. A steep ramp can be placed on the 3 steps. You may need a strong

At the Guido Gezelleplein, less than 200 meters from the museum, there are two adapted parking spaces. You can avoid the rounded cobblestones of the path through the courtyard and a steep slope by taking side alley Groeninge. It has flat cobblestones. The entrance through the double doors is without thresholds.

This piece of world heritage used to house beguines, emancipated women who were admittedly layman, but still conducted a devout and celibate life. Nowadays, the Beguinage is inhabited by the nuns of the Order of St. Benedict. The Beguine’s House gives a good idea of what daily life was like in the 17th century. CARE AND MOBILITY AIDS

You need medical care while on holiday? As a tourist in Flanders you can call upon a regional service or independent nurses who operate near your holiday address. Contact a nursing service as quickly as possible so that you can discuss the possibilities and conditions on time. A few big organisations that can help you include: > The Wit-Gele Kruis Kruis (White-Yellow Cross) is a home nursing organization with branches all over Flanders. You can find the contact addresses per province on www.wgk.be (in Dutch).

> The Flemish Association for Independent Nurses (VBZV) lists where you can go for home nursing on the website www.verplegingthuis.be (in Dutch). You can contact a nurse directly to discuss your concrete requests. > Home nursing and other forms of care can also be arranged via a local or regional social service or joint venture. Het Vlaams Agentschap Zorg en Gezondheid (Flemish Agency Care and Health) familiarises you with the offerings via this website: www.zorg-en-gezondheid.be (in Dutch).

You need mobility aids while on holiday? You need a hospital bed, hoist, scoot mobile, etc. at your holiday address? Then you can obtain your requirements from a local lending service. Some devices, usually lighter items, must be collected; other items can be delivered to and/or installed at your holiday address. In Bruges, you can turn to one of the lending services below. Not all mobility aids are available in every lending service. We advice you to contact them in advance.
