BSU ATHLETIC TRAININGCARDINAL TAPE CUTS

Summer 2011 Edition

From the Director’s Desk Tom Weidner, PhD, ATC, FNATA

Another change for our ATEP is that Dr. Lisa Jutte has resigned her position and accepted a faculty position at Xavier University in Cincinnati. Lisa was a positive influence in our ATEP. Her scientific and clinical knowledge will particularly be missed. Dorice Hankemeier, Phd, ATC, has been hired to replace Lisa. Dorice just completed her doctorate in Human Movement Sciences with a cognate in curriculum and instruction at Old Dominion University. She is also generally interested in clinical education research, with a particular emphasis in athletic training evidence-based practice.

Professor and Chair, School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science Life is full of changes, some welcome, others less so. Although it’s nice when things are comfortable, new opportunities can be energizing and refreshing in ways not entirely understood until we begin them. I hope that you are enjoying a nice balance between the constant and the new. With this mind, I have now been elected as the Chair of the School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science for a 5-year term. It is a large and complex School (over a dozen majors/graduate programs, 50 personnel), and I have my hands full! I am learning that the experiences and skills garnered through my role as Program Director/faculty member over the past 25 years are being applied in both similar and new ways. I am pleased to be able to support the goals of the ATEP in a new fashion (e.g., 2 new doctoral assistantship positions, fullysupplied lab, travel reimbursement for site visits). I believe that there are other contributions I can make in the future which can positively influence true growth in the maturity of the overall program.

Our faculty group continues to complete scholarly and service activities. Dr. Stacy Walker has had a particularly strong year with 5 Publications in a variety of refereed journals (e.g., Journal of Athletic Training, Athletic Training Education Journal) on topics ranging from standardized patients to evidence-based practice. Stacy has also made 6 regional and national presentations also on the topics of standardized patients and evidence-based practice. She has also continued her national service on the Task Force on Continuing Professional Education and was appointed to the Editorial Board for the Journal of Athletic Training and the Athletic Training Education Journal. It is certainly because of activities such as these that our ATEP continues its national reputation. With this in mind, I am pleased to share that Dr. Walker has received tenure and has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. Congratulations to Stacy!

New faculty member, Jennifer Popp, EdD, ATC, will officially assume the Program Director position on August 19. She brings 17 years of clinical experience, classroom teaching experience, and 5 years of Program Director experience. She is extremely personable and will immediately and effectively be a strong administrator of the program. She looks forward to establishing a line of research in clinical education and make important service contributions to the profession in the future.

Summer 2011 Edition

Farr is near the top of the umpiring world - St. Catharine [athletic] trainer, Bardstown resident to call Little League World Series Kentucky  Standard,  The  (Bardstown,  KY)  -‐   Saturday,  June  4,  2011 TOM  BYSTREK

“I have umpired at every level from 9-year-olds to 18-year-olds,” Farr said. “You get rated everywhere you call a game and that is how you move up to calling the bigger tournaments. I have had opportunities to call pro ball in the Frontier League but have had to turn them down.” For exactly half of his life Farr has donned the blue uniform as he called 9-10 year old softball when he was only 12. He landed his first Little League district tournament at age 16 in Charlestown, Ind. At that young age he received the Little League Volunteer of the Year Award.

St. Catharine College At 24 years of age, Justin Farr is young to be a college athletic trainer. But Farr, in his first year in that post at St. Catharine College, finds himself in even older company in his secondary occupation, that of an accomplished umpire.

After receiving his BS degree in athletic training from Ball State University , Farr served as trainer at Preble Shawnee High School in southwest Ohio. While there he was also the [athletic] trainer for the Richmond (Indiana) River Rats, a team in the Prospect League. In addition he worked as an orthopedic assistant at Reid Hospital in Richmond.

Accomplished could very well describe Farr’s umpiring credentials as the native of Clarksville, Ind., has already called balls and strikes in some prestigious venues. The most recent call came from the Little League World Series, where he will umpire softball in Portland, Ore., in August.

Throughout his training career, however, Farr has found time to maintain his passion for umpiring. And leagues and organizations, including Little League, have found him to be one of the best as the World Series website indicated when it read: “Selection as an umpire at any of Little League’s eight World Series means that person has reached the highest level of proficiency and by virtue of their selection is considered among the best in the world.”

“I am 30 years younger than any other umpire who will be out there,” said Farr, who will be part of the 12-man crew to work the week-long tournament. “I am fortunate to get to work the World Series as some umpires will never get that chance their whole life.” Farr’s umpiring resume indicates a lot of chances that many will never have. He has worked the Prospect League, which is a wooden bat summer league for Division I collegiate players. He has called 10 Little League state championships and will umpire at least four more this summer. His softball experience includes the Central Region championship two years ago in Joplin, Mo. This summer, Farr will call the United Southern Girls’ Fastpitch World Series and will also travel to Cooperstown, N.Y., to work at the Cooperstown Dream Park.

“It’s pretty cool,” Farr said about his selection. “And the tournament will be on ESPN and I have never done a televised game. This is the ultimate for my Little League career.” Tom Bystrek is the sports information director at St. Catharine College.
