“The blues, finding its way back home!” When blues guitar genius Stevie Ray Vaughan was tragically killed in 1990, it seemed as if the blues world and the genre itself would never recover from this blow. After all, it was through Stevie that the genre had advanced immensely and enjoyed a never before seen popularity amongst all sections of the general public. Almost 25 years later, the blues isn’t played on ‘mainstream’ radio anymore and big international successes of real blues performers have become scarce. Eric Clapton does keep the momentum somewhat alive as do still living blues legends like Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Charlie Musselwhite, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, and others from ‘the old school’ as well as ‘newcomers’ like Gary Clark, Jr. and Joe Bonamassa. However, the blues is definitely flourishing in the US, in the live circuit of clubs and at festivals, where the demand for performances by living guitar heroes but also the interest in the large crowd of newcomers is absolutely growing. This is hardly a surprise. Trends in contemporary popular music come and go but those types of original and pure music, like jazz, gospel, salsa, and definitely blues are able to endure the pressure of unwanted artistic concessions and thus stand the test of time. Curaçao is making its own contribution to this new resurgence of blues, after all, this musical expression is intricately linked to the island’s and Caribbean region’s history. The Blues is finding its way back home! Curaçao International BlueSeas Festival Fundashon Bon Intenshon

ANA POPOVIC

Buddy Guy

JOE LOUIS WALKER

At first sight, blond guitarist, singer/ songwriter Ana Popović, born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, may seem a most unlikely candidate when it comes to performing blues music, but has she “got the blues” for sure! At age 19, Ana founded her first serious band and has been playing at blues and jazz festivals all over Europe and the US ever since, picking up no less than five Blues Music Award nominations along the way, including those for Best New Artist Debut (‘09) and Contemporary Blues Female Artist (‘12 and ‘14).

Multiple Grammy Award winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, blues legend, and showman Buddy Guy will certainly be working his ‘mojo’ on Saturday 9 May. Born in Louisiana but forever associated with that particular brand of blues from Chicago, Buddy Guy’s impact on blues and rock and roll music is tremendous, and is evident in the styles of every rockstar from Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan to John Mayer. Buddy Guy is one of the final surviving connections to an historic era in the American musical evolution and is still going as strong as ever.

Since the age of 16, playing guitar on the stages of his hometown San Francisco, Blues Hall of Fame inductee Joe Louis Walker has played with the best of the best, sharing the spotlight with legends such as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix. Walker is among the greatest bluesmen of his generation. He is known worldwide as one of the genre’s top musical trailblazers, a mesmerizing guitarist and soul-testifying vocalist. Now in his mid-sixties, Walker shows no signs of slowing down.

Her music style, a fusion of blues, funk, rock, and a hint of jazz, combined with powerful vocals and edgy guitar play, guarantees exciting live shows. In 2013, Popović released her ninth album Can You Stand the Heat and in 2014 she was invited, as the only female guitarist, to join the Experience Hendrix Tour, a concert series celebrating the music and legacy of her idol Jimi Hendrix, featuring an all star line-up including Buddy Guy, Quinn Sullivan, and Dweezil Zappa.

In 2012, he released Live at Legends which was nominated for Best New Recording in the Living Blues Awards, followed in 2013 by his 27th studio album Rhythm & Blues. Not only is Guy keeping the blues alive through his own live performances and recordings, he also keeps looking to the future of the blues through his ongoing work with 15-year-old protégé, Quinn Sullivan. Guy received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.

His 2012 album Hellfire took the blues world by storm and received the Living Blues Critics’ Award for Blues Album of the Year. Walker’s music style ranges from hard rocking electric blues to cool Memphis funk to R&B and gospel. The dynamic 25th album Hornet’s Nest, released in 2014, is a contemporary blues tour-de-force that causes countless new fans to fall under the spell of his mesmerizing guitar play.

KAT RIGGINS Riggins, the ‘bluesy songstress with a rockstar flair and a hip hop heartbeat’, grew up surrounded by music and developed a love for gospel and soul, to country and rock, and everything in between. Kat’s own musical style is a blend of the blues with hip hop, pop, rock and even some country music. Her goal is to introduce blues music to a mainstream audience by re-introducing it to the world as Blues Fusion. In 2011, Riggins recorded her first EP Seoul Music, a compilation of blues covers and original songs, during her tour through Asia and the Middle East. Her debut blues-fusion album Lily Rose, released in 2014, includes favorites from Seoul Music along with new entries to her song journal. Together with her Blues Revival Band Kat Riggins will definitely be shaking things up as she returns to the island after her first successful performance in Pietermaai District as part of the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival 2014 pre-program.

LURRIE BELL’S CHICAGO BLUES BAND

MORELAND & ARBUCKLE

During his many years in the business Lurrie Bell, with his elegant and intense guitar playing and passionate vocals, has earned himself the reputation of being one of the “leading lights” in the future of the blues. Like many other artists attending the 2015 BlueSeas festival, Bell’s talent for music manifested itself at an early age. Born in Chicago, he spent a large part of his childhood years in Mississippi and Alabama where he played mostly in the church and immersed himself in the passionate expressiveness of the gospel tradition. As a teenager Bell moved back to Chicago, formed his first band and hit the stages surrounded by many of the Chicago blues legends, who helped shape and school him in the blues.

In over a decade of exploring the edges of American roots music, guitarist Aaron Moreland and singer/harmonica player Dustin Arbuckle have developed a contemporary sound that merges folk, rock, traditional country, and soul while remaining firmly grounded in traditional Delta blues. After the release of their third and critically acclaimed album Flood in 2010, the band along with drummer Kendall Newby hit the road for tour dates with blues and rock veterans like ZZ Top, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray.

He has released numerous albums, both in cooperation with other artists and as a solo artist and won one award after the other. In 2014, Bell was nominated for 5 Blues Music Awards and Blues in My Soul won for Blues Song of the Year.

In 2013, the trio released their fifth album 7 Cities, referring the Spanish explorer Coronado’s search for the mythical seven cities of gold in the Kansas plains, not far from their home base Wichita. The album debuted on #8 on Billboard’s Blues chart and ranges from vintage rock to bluegrass, honky-tonk, folk, and blues in The Devil and Me to the energetic boogie blues in Tall Boogie.

QUINN SULLIVAN Teenage guitar prodigy Quinn Sullivan is a star on the rise! According to his mentor and friend, Buddy Guy, Sullivan “embodies the future of blues guitar”. Since the age of seven, Sullivan has been sharing stages with legendary players like Eric Clapton, BB King, and Buddy Guy at iconic venues like the Hollywood Bowl and Madison Square Garden. Now at age 15, he has been touring the world and is quickly gaining quite a reputation among today’s most respected guitar players and musical artists. In 2011, Quinn released his debut album Cyclone which peaked at #7 on the Billboard blues album chart, followed by his second album Getting There, a set of blues, rock, rockabilly, and Beatlesesque pop songs, in June of 2013. In addition to his performances in Pietermaai District, Sullivan will join Buddy Guy on stage on Saturday 9 May.

SHEMEKIA COPELAND She has opened for the Rolling Stones, headlined at the Chicago Blues Festival and numerous festivals around the world, and shared the stage with such luminaries as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, and Eric Clapton. There is no doubt about it, two-time Grammy Award nominee Shemekia Copeland is a force to be reckoned with in the world of blues. Since her debut album Turn the Heat Up!, released at only 19, she has received raving reviews for her ever innovative interpretation of blues. Copeland’s passion for singing, matched with her huge, deeply soulful voice, gives her music a timeless power and a heartpounding emergency. Her second album, Wicked, released in 2000, scored three Handy Awards (Song of the Year, Blues Album of the Year, Contemporary Female Artist of the Year) and a Grammy nomination. Her latest album 33 1/3, released in 2012, earned her a second Grammy nomination for Best Blues Album.

THE ORIGINAL BLUES BROTHERS BAND Steady yourselves for the meanest lineup of badass blues cats ever assembled: The “Original” Blues Brothers™ Band! Originally founded by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as part of a musical sketch on Saturday Night Live in 1978, The Blues Brothers may be best known for the feature films The Blues Brothers and Blues Brothers 2000 and the triple-platinum album Briefcase Full of Blues and have played in various set-ups throughout the years. The ‘Original’ Blues Brothers Band, with members hand-picked by Belushi and Aykroyd themselves, keeps the legend more than alive with super swinging performances at international jazz and blues festivals such as North Sea Jazz, the Netherlands and the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, playing to audiences estimated up to 60,000 in one performance. Now the 10+ member band will be ‘a-movin and ‘a-groovin’ at De Kleine Werf, Curaçao on Saturday 9 May!

THE REVEREND PEYTON’S BIG DAMN BAND The three-piece country blues band from Indiana, USA, with Josh “The Reverend” Peyton on guitar and lead vocals, Breezy Peyton on washboard, and Ben “Bird Dog” Bussell on drums is a feast for the ears and eyes (note the Reverend’s threestring cigar box guitar and Bussell’s drum kit with the five gallon plastic bucket!). The Big Damn Band brings an infectious mix of country blues, ragtime, and folk with some punk fueled rock, that has brought a new generation cheering for American roots music. Their album Between the Ditches was at the top of the iTunes Blues chart on the first day of its release in 2012 and entered the Billboard Blues chart on #2. And their new album So Delicious offers the band’s most diverse collection of songs buoyed by the Rev.’s supercharged six-string virtuosity - a unique style of fingerpicking inspired by his Delta blues heroes, but taken to new, original heights.

THE SLIDE BROTHERS Prepare to fall under the spell of the steel guitar! This type of guitar is used in a horizontal position and the pitch is changed by the player using a bar or slide of steel. Calvin Cooke, Chuck Campbell, Darick Campbell, and Aubry Ghent are The Slide Brothers and absolute masters of the instrument. In the 1930s the steel guitar with its singing sound replaced the organ in Afro-American churches, also known as the Sacred Steel tradition. The Slide Brothers, staying close to its gospel roots, are considered the greatest living musicians who embody this Sacred Steel tradition. Their passionate play produces a swinging sound that is as raw as the blues but with an intense gospel feeling. Recently, The Slide Brothers featured as part of the Experience Hendrix Tour and their acclaimed performances have won over crowds of fans for the joyous, enchanting appeal of the sacred steel.

Originally a flourishing suburb of Willemstad, historic Pietermaai District became a ghetto after a long period of neglect during the last decades of the 20th century. Since 2000, the district has experienced a revival when the 200-year old impressive mansions and workers houses, all monuments, started to get renovated and restored to their original state. These days, the trendy neighborhood is bustling with activity and home to numerous idyllic restaurants, bars, and hotels, as well as new residents of all ages and backgrounds.
