Building Alberta QEII Upgrades Improve Safety on Highway and Interchanges Background Alberta Transportation builds, maintains and manages the province’s transportation network as part of the government’s commitment to invest in families and communities, and build Alberta’s economic future. The Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Highway is an integral part of the province’s core highway network. Alberta is investing more than $23 million toward travel and safety improvements on the QEII between Red Deer and Carstairs.

Project Details Most of this highway investment is allocated to nighttime repaving work on two separate projects along the QEII. Repaving will be done from approximately one kilometre north of Carstairs to Highway 27, both northbound and southbound lanes, and approximately one kilometre north of Innisfail to Red Deer, both northbound and southbound lanes. As paving is underway, upgrades are also being done at the QE II/Highway 27 interchange. These include improvements to the exits from the QEII and the addition of new ramps on Highway 27. These changes will improve traffic flow for those entering and exiting the QE II. To ensure the safety of the travelling public, Alberta Transportation also removed two roadside turnouts on the QEII.

Two mobile asphalt plants were set up for re-paving 40 kilometres of the QE II and work on the QEII/Highway 27 interchange.

The turnouts are located southbound between the Highway 11/67 Street and 32 Street interchanges, opposite the Sports Hall of Fame on the QEII; and northbound between Highway 42 and McKenzie Road. Nearby highway exits provide access to services, including restaurants and gasoline. The government has invested more than $370 million across the region in recent years, including the $23 million for the QE II work, funding for the wastewater project, grants for local transportation initiatives, $12 million in GreenTRIP funding for new Red Deer buses and Alberta Transportation’s investment in highways and bridges.

Building Alberta Investments in water and wastewater for Central Alberta $178 million for local projects The Government of Alberta supports the development of effective water and wastewater facilities for all communities in the province. As part of our ongoing commitment, $178 million is being invested in two significant central Alberta water improvement projects. Residents between Olds and Red Deer will benefit from the Government of Alberta’s $121 million investment in the South Red Deer Regional Wastewater project. This commitment represents 90 percent of the total project cost of $134 million. The South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commission’s (SRDRWC) system will serve Red Deer, Olds, Bowden, Innisfail, Penhold and the counties of Mountain View and Red Deer.

Increased provincial funding The increased provincial government investment supports the completion of the regional wastewater system in Alberta’s rapidly growing South Red Deer region by 2015. The major purpose of the SRDRWC is to eliminate the municipal-treated wastewater discharges from across the region into the Red Deer River downstream of the Dickson Dam and upstream of the Red Deer Wastewater Treatment Plant. In addition, the provincial government is providing the City of Red Deer with $57 million in funding for upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant.

South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Project from Innisfail to Red Deer

Alberta Transportation’s partnership with the South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commission and funding to upgrade the City of Red Deer wastewater treatment facility reflects the government’s collaborative approach to working with municipalities. The province is committed to promoting strong communities and supporting Albertans through strategic municipal development.
