Hi. Hello. How are you? That’s nice. Welcome to this year’s book! If you’re wondering about the title it is 2013 as expressed in Hexadecimal (it’s a computer thing, Google it) and if you’re not wondering about the title, you probably already knew that and you’re probably quite nerdy, good for you! You may have noticed this book looks a little different to the last ones, there are two reasons: Firstly Blurb’s prices got a bit too high and I don’t have a rich uncle to pay for any of this you know. (Coincidently there is a rich uncle position available in my life, if you know of anyone please ask them to send me a resume, cover letter and cheque for $10,000 made out to my friend C. Ash) So I thought I’d give this HP MagCloud thing a go. Anyway the other reason is there aren’t any panoramic photos this time, so why have a panoramicish book? The reason why I haven’t shot many panoramic images this year is because I have mostly shot with my new Mamiya 7 & 43mm lens that I got late last year. I actually haven’t shot much since being in New Zealand back in June. No particular reason why, just lazy, and since the 17th of September, Grand Theft Auto V. I was in three exhibitions this year, first was with the MSM at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, next was Momentary Collective organised by a friend and last but not least Unsensored13 with the MSM again. I didn’t sell one print. So enjoy looking through this book, as per usual it’s a collection of my favourite images from throughout the year. No need for warnings though, no digital, all film and no sneaky phone shots. I am still looking forward to the day I receive one of these back. (Hint!) So have a Merry Xmas, Happy New Year and all that bullshit! Cheers, MRJ ps. There’s a monster at the end of this book!

New camera, new wide lens, I haven’t fingered this many frames since 2004! #absoluterookie

I have always liked how people try and interact with the fish at the aquarium, the fools. Those poor, poor photogenic fools.

I took this photo while out on a photo walk/photography lesson with my friend Ahmad.

I dragged Ziz to Point Cook at the start of the year in search of interesting scenes at new housing estates. I’m calling the series “New Territories”, it’s about our dramatically changing landscape.

Typical, when you want to start shooting a new subject, an old subject pops up. This abandoned house was at one of the estates, I don’t think it had even been lived in.

I have had rolls of Agfa Ultra 50 120 in the freezer waiting for me to buy an awesome new medium format camera. It happened and I fucking love this combo. Sorry for swearing Nana.

You may have seen a photo of this gentleman in my photos before, maybe even one of these books, I would check but you know, I can’t be fucked. A small percentage of you are this person.

Ziz told me to take this photo. There you go Ziz, are you happy? ARE YOU HAPPY?! For such an awesome font it has a particularly ugly question mark.

It’s almost like they built this estate up to this point and just stopped. I am going back to these locations in the new year to document their progress.

Top of a mall carpark on a hot summer’s day. When you check in here on Foursquare it says: “Your 15. Don’t act like a hard Kent waiting for your mum at the station”.

I saw this massive church pretty much in the middle of nowhere from the train visiting Rhys once.

I saw this abandoned place from the road one day, I went back a couple of weeks later, as it turns out it was a nursing home, extra creepy. There was rat and possum shit everywhere, yum!

I’m not sure what it is about this photo but I think it’s fucking beautiful. I think I may have interrupted someone’s art time, there were markers and pencils and shit on the insulation in the middle there.

Another carpark, another hot day, another bunch of dudes in a Big W loading bay that think they’re the fucking boss of the entire shopping centre, boy were they wrong!

A friend’s partner’s parents own this place, Gypsy Creek Winery. We went there for grape grazing, there was a grape crushing contest, the girl that showed everyone her arse won.

I called this photo “New Territories in old territories” knocking down old housing buildings so they can cram more people in. I also like how the grass is green on the other side of the fence.

Ziz and I also went out to Drouin one day. Where is Drouin? you might ask. Well head out to the arse end of fucking nowhere and it’s just before there. My friends The Crepes live out there. Hi!

Yet another estate, this one had a platform with flags so you could see your future view, no thanks.

So someone had the foresight to put a goal in the middle of a park for me, I’ll take a photo of that thankyouverymuch.

Ambre and I went to Mornington Peninsula for the weekend and I took this photo on the way. There was a beach hut nearby with empty beer bottles and used fireworks, good times.

This was also on the way to Mornington, I’m really digging the minimalist thing here. The photo is called “There’s a ship on the horizon”, I’m not sure if you’ll be able to see the ship in print or not.

While I was shooting this I could see a chap out of the corner of my eye with a Nikon DSLR, he was holding his camera near his eye but he was watching me, his mouth was agape the whole time, after I took a couple of frames I went over to him and picked his jaw off the wharf for him.

I took this on the way back from Mornington. It was cold, windy and raining, I saw this scene fly past and I made Ambre turn around. It was my last frame on the roll, the traffic was fucking relentless and my shutter speed was far too slow, thank God for Unsharp Mask.

Ah New Zealand. This is Momorangi Bay on the way to Picton. We hadn’t seen the sky for some time but when we got here it just opened up.

I first photographed this church in 2002 with my ‘Blad, it was a lot closer to the road back then. (I just made a wide angle joke, you can laugh now)

Poor Seddon got a hammering earlier this year from a quake. I never used to like Seddon, only because of that fucking one way rail bridge, anxiety when crossing much?

More minimalist awesomeness in this shot. I have to give the credit of this shot to Ambre though, she spotted this place from up on the lookout in Kaikoura, I never knew Kaikoura even had a pool!

This is Koura Bay Lodge, it’s in Kaikoura, my friends Vivian and Shannon run this place, you must visit this place, stay at this place and eat Vivian’s amazeballs food. DO THIS NOW! Oh and the photography on display there? Also amazeballs.

Oh look at that! A panorama! I tricked you. I told you at the beginning that there were no panoramas

in this book and here is one! I wasn’t lying about the monster at the end of the book. Are you scared?

This is what confuses me about the earthquakes in Christchurch, out of all the buildings that were destroyed, this one, this piece of shit that I wouldn’t have stood under 12 years ago stayed up.

Out of all the top levels of carparks in Melbourne this one is the best. The colours are so wacky and I think more photographers have been up there than cars. And yes, Agfa Ultra 50 of course.

I spotted this place on the way to Ballarat, Ziz saw it also, we texted each other about it, unfortunately on the way back the timing and the light was on my side. Sorry Bro.

This was the third time that I had used the Voigtlander this year and yet I still want one of those new Sonys, do you know how many rolls I could get processed and scanned for that money?

Ambre made me go to see the tulips, the fucking tulips! Thousands of the fuckers! I hated every moment. The only thing worse than the tulips was the traffic and parking, what a nightmare!

Hi Welcome to the back of the book yet again! 0x7DD is a collection of my favourite images from 2013. No need for warnings this year, no digital, not even one and no mobile shits either. (I’m going to leave that typo in) And if you’re wondering about the monster and the end of the book... Well look at that! This is the end of the book and the only one here is

ME! I, lovable, furry old Wideboy am the monster at the end of this book. And you were so scared!
