Experience the excitement and wonder of volcanoes and glaciers on a mid-ocean ridge! Sitting on the spreading ridge of two massive tectonic plates, Iceland is a land of many contrasts. The volcanism at this spreading zone and associated geothermal features are outsanding laboratories to learn about our dynamic planet. See icecaps, glaciers, and deep fjords as well as the history of the vikings and ancient Icelandic dwellers. Join GeoAwareHQ and a local Icelandic guide to explore the wonders of Iceland. Trip ITINERARY* August 9 - Pick up at accommodation in Reykjavík before heading to KEF airport for those arriving in the morning. Breakfast at a restaurant close by. Drive along the tip of the peninsula to the geothermal spa Blue Lagoon. Continue through the peninsula passing Krísuvík and Kleifarvatn lake. Arrive early afternoon at accommodation in Hafnarfjörður town. Resting in hotel or geocaching! Dinner: Viking feast at the Viking Village Caches:Midlina or Gunnuhver Earthcache, Bláa Lónið: Earth Cache, 1-2 geocaches., Hafnarfjörður town: several geocaches in walking distance from hotel. August 10 - The Golden Circle: Þingvellir NP – Gullfoss waterfall – Geysir geothermal area. Caches: Þingvellir: Þingvellir - The Midatlantic ridge Earthcache, Walking with the viking geocache, Geysir: Geysir- powerful hot spring Earthcache, Gullfoss: At the top of the world - Gullfoss Multi-cache, More geocaches along the route, if time allows. Activity: Friðheimar horse show and greenhouse visit (heated with geothermal energy) August 11 - Þjórsárdalur valley with Gjáin oasis - Fjallabak North, passing Hekla volcano, Landmannalaugar nature reserve and Elgjá “Fire gorge” - Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Evening on own (earthcache and geocache in walking distance). Caches: vÞjórsárdalur : Gjáin (a beautiful ravine) Earthcache, Landmannalaugar: Landmannalaugar - Fjallabak reserve August 12 - Skaftafell National Park, hike to Svartifoss waterfall & - Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon - Kirkjubæjarklaustur Caches:Skeiðarársandur: Jökulhlaup in Skeiðarársandur in 1996 Earthcache, Skaftafell: Svartifoss Earthcache & other Geocaches in the area. Jökulsálón: Two Geocaches in the area. Activity: Boat tour on Jökulsárlón (big boat) August 13 - The south coast with Vík Village, Reynisfjara black sand beach, Dyrhólaey cliff, Sólheimajökull icefall and Skógar waterfell. Accommodation at Skógar. Evening on own (Earthcache and two Geocaches in walking distance). Caches: South coast: Reynisdrangar Earthcache, Stuðlaberg Hellar (basalt caves) Earthcache, The geology of Dyrhólaey Earth cache & other Geocaches along the route Activity: Glacier walk on Sólheimajökull icefall with Icelandic Mountainguides August 14 - Drive through the area of Eyjafjallajökull volcano/glacier (erupted in 2010). Now head to The Westman Islands. Ferry at 10.00 (arrive 30 min before). Drive around the Island and hike to Mt. Eldfell. Caches: Eldfell & Surtsey Island Earthcaches, New Lava & Heimaklettur geocaches August 15 - In the morning (08.30) take the ferry back to Landeyjahöfn – visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall - Þórsmörk valley – Reykjavík capital . Farewell dinner at a restaurant in Reykjavík. Evening on own with multiple Geocaches located down town Reykjavík in walking distance from hotel. Caches: Þórsmörk: Earthcache on the moon? - KATLA GEOPARK, Other Geocaches in Þórsmörk valley and along the route. August 16 - (Morning on own in Reykjavík - depending on departure time ) - After 8 adventurous days in Iceland your driver will take Caches: Geocaches on own in Reykjavík

Trip Leader Matt Dawson, Education & Outreache, Geological Socity of America, Boulder, Colorado. Matt has worked in GSA’s Education and Outreach Department since 2010, assisting with the EarthCache program and coordinating the GeoCorps America program. Matt has also co-led GSA GeoVentures in Iceland and Colorado. Matt first connected with GSA in 2007, when he worked in a GeoCorps position with the Bureau of Land Management in Montana. Before coming to GSA, Matt worked as a Naturalist in Chandler, AZ, and as a high school earth science teacher in Brockton, MA. Matt has a B.S. in Geology from Caltech and an M.S. in Geology from MIT. Matt enjoys running, hiking, biking, climbing, camping, and caching with his wife and son in Colorado and beyond.
