Curator's Tour: Shadow of Sodeisha Join Dr Audrey Whitty, Keeper, Art & Industry for a tour of the new exhibition Shadow of Sodeisha: Japanese and Irish Art in Clay. Marking the 60th anniversary of the official commencement of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Japan in 1957, this exhibition displays the work of 12 leading contemporary ceramic artists from both Ireland and Japan. No booking required, places allocated on a first-come basis 15 minutes before tour starts. Caint / Talk Bog bodies, Bicycles and Big Houses: The Material Imagination of Irish writing Following visits to the National Museum of Ireland, students from the School of English at Trinity College Dublin produced creative responses to the objects that recur in modern and contemporary Irish writing. Students will present selections of their work, which has been collected in their published book motes.No Booking required. Francis Ledwidge: A celebration of his life, Daoine fásta work and legacy / Adults Born in a labourer's cottage in Slane, Co Meath, the poet Francis Ledwidge worked as a farm labourer, a miner and a road worker while writing the poems that brought him fame during his short life. He enlisted in the Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1914. Having endured Gallipoli, Ledwidge was killed on July 31st 1917 during the nightmare 3rd Battle of Ypres. Join Dermot Bolger editor of a new edition of Ledwidge's Selected Poems, poet Michael O'Loughlin and the acclaimed artist Liam Ó Broin who for decades has lived next door to the Ledwidge cottage museum, for a celebration of the life of Francis Ledwidge. Public Tour: Decade of Conflict Join a public tour on exploring the turbulent decade from 1913-1923 examining the ordinary Irishmen and women involved in World War I, the 1916 Rising, War of Independence and Civil War. The Hoard & the Sword: Echoes of the Vikings This exhibition explores the discovery of a hoard of silver bracelets from Cushalogurt, Kilmeena and a Viking sword found in the river Moy at Coolcronaun. This is the largest hoard of silver armrings found in Ireland and the sword is a fine example of late 10th century craftsmanship. These objects provide evidence of Mayo's Viking Heritage. This year the artists will be working on a living willow shelter and a willow trail in the Museum's award winning grounds. Drop by and see how the work is progressing.
