Call for Artists

Request for Qualifications (RFQ) Eden Prairie Aquatics Center
Public Art Opportunity: Donor Wall

ProjectS This will be a two-phase process beginning with the artists submitting qualifications and preliminary concepts for one or both locations. Artists will then be selected to move on to the second phase and commissioned to complete a detailed proposal to the selection committee. Artists are encouraged to submit for one or both of the following opportunities: Project #1 This project will be a donor appreciation wall, to be placed in the main entrance hallway of the new Eden Prairie Aquatics Center. The dimensions of the wall are approximately 10 feet wide by 10 feet high. The project would not need to take up the entire space, but scale should be a factor as this piece is meant to memorialize donors and enliven the facility. This project needs to be designed as a donor wall that can incorporate names of individuals and companies while designating donor levels using color or other design elements. The design must include the capability to make additions or changes over time.

Project #2 This project will be placed behind the spectator seating area of the Aquatics Center’s competition pool. The dimensions of the wall are 97 feet wide by 12 feet high. The City of Eden Prairie will commission an artist or team to create a dynamic mural or lightweight wall relief to enliven the space and provide a focal point for visitors. All mediums will be considered, however the artist should take into account the size of the wall and make the maximum impact with the allocated budget.

Site History Community Center – Enriching the Spirit of Community The goal of the Community Center is to be a premier gathering place for Eden Prairie residents. Since 1983, the Eden Prairie Community Center has offered services including skating, swimming, room rentals, racquetball, fitness classes, child care area, play structure, café, gymnasium and dry floor area. More than 1 million people visit the Community Center each year. The expansion of the pool area will fill a longtime need to have a fun-filled aquatics environment to meet the needs of the entire community. The expansion includes two eight-lane lap pools, two diving boards, a climbing wall and seating for 300 spectators. These pools will be used for competition-level swimming and diving, as well as a variety of swim instruction and fitness programming. Upon completion of the two new pools, the Community Center’s current pool will be converted to a warm-water, zero-entry pool for families and residents of all ages.

Theme Artists are encouraged to create artwork with an aquatics theme and provide opportunity for community interaction. The artwork should be highly original, enrich the City and evoke meaning. Artists should consider the current architecture, color scheme and branding of the surrounding environment. There is a strong desire to create continuity between existing design elements, such as banners and furniture, sculpture and wall art. Artwork should be highly durable and low maintenance. The artwork should be welcoming and accessible to all members of the community. Because the artwork will be in a high traffic area, the tile work should not stick out from the wall more than 3 inches.

Budget A budget of $20,000 for each project must cover all expenses associated with the project including design, fabrication, materials, labor and installation. The City shall retain copyright privileges to make reproductions for non-profit use such as brochures, publicity and website publication.
