Please submit completed form to [email protected] no later than March 17, 2017. Presenters will be notified by April 1, 2017 The Atkinson Centre for Society and Child Development/Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and the School of Early Childhood/ George Brown College announce a Call for Proposals for the 14th Annual Summer Institute in Toronto, Ontario, June 2, 2017. Research tells us that quality early childhood education can be a game-changer for children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Yet many policies and practices prevent racialized, indigenous and vulnerable children from participating in early childhood programs or stream them into low quality settings. The 14th conference theme is Addressing inequities in Canada through early childhood education. By the time we meet on June 2, a new framework for early learning and childcare will most likely be in place. Jurisdictions are using the occasion to update their early childhood policies. It is important that change be informed by evidence and viewed through an equity lens. This year’s institute will feature sessions that allow for extended, informed dialogue about ECEC finance, policy, practice and research and its role in promoting – or subverting -- equity. Proposals that include the voices of practitioners and policymakers are especially welcomed. Workshops, papers, panels and posters sessions are solicited around the following topic strands: Promoting equity through: 1. Closing the equity gap in public policy 2. Funding for equity: Adequacy, equity and transparency in ECEC funding and the role of the market. 3. Recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce: The role of training, hiring, evaluation and compensation of educators, educator shortages, collective bargaining, and occupational standards. 4. Program location and environmental design. 5. Integrating Indigenous knowledge into early childhood programming and practices. 6. Approaches to inclusion and equity in the classroom. 7. Program standards and evaluating child and program outcomes. Where is the equity lens? 8. Early years service planning: Is equity at the table? 9. Leadership recruitment preparation 10. Returning to a feminist perspective
