Asian water resources, vital for the survival and well-being of billions of people and precious ecosystems, are under increasing pressure due to spiraling demand of water for energy and food production. The potential impact of global environmental changes is likely to accelerate the profound and widespread effects on water resources availability and access, magnitude and frequency of natural disasters and related strategies for food and energy security in the fast developing economies of Asia. Key questions arise about the wider perspective on water resources management: How energy and food production policies and technologies will reconfigure the distribution of water, as well as that of the costs, benefits and risks of global changes at different scales? What are the major issues and challenges for an inclusive dialogue amongst policymakers, managers, scientists, and civil society to achieve substantive improvements in water productivity and promote hydro-solidarity? Which issues and challenges need immediate water policy intervention and where? CLEAN – Soil, Air, Water will publish a special issue related to challenges of and options for contemporary water resources management pertinent to energy and food security and hope to contribute to the debate on water management for agricultural and energy security in Asia. We invite papers that could be published as part of this special issue. Specifically, we seek papers that examine the trade-off and synergies between agriculture and energy, validity of large transboundary water resources projects considering their social and environmental impacts (e.g. pollution transport) and explore options to enhance our understanding of wastewater treatment and reuse in agriculture, water and public health, surface and groundwater pollution, generation of energy e.g. from sludge and biomass that is irrigated with (waste) water, microbial fuel cells operated with wastewater, etc. Papers exploring the historical development of water management strategies and technology for energy and food security in the developed world, with insights for elsewhere, are also welcomed. Those should particularly address how, and at what level of national wealth, developed countries have addressed issues of technology adoption, financial sustainability and social equity issues of water management. We expect that the publication of the Special issue will contribute to the discourse on much needed technology adoption, policy innovation and management reforms for securing higher productivity and equity in water use which will find audience not only in Asia but also other countries in the developing world, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa.

The deadline for submission of manuscripts is March 31, 2013 and submissions have to be made through the electronic submission system used by the CLEAN – Soil, Air, Water (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/clean). We would also welcome your reply by email (mailto:[email protected]) if you plan to submit a manuscript and if so, to provide a tentative title of your paper and also indicate whether it will be a review article or an original work.
