call to artists #YEGCANVAS: A Citywide Billboard and LRT Station-Based Art Exhibition About Edmonton Located on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, Edmonton, Alberta is known as “Festival City” and “Gateway to the North.” With more than one million people living in the Greater Edmonton region, the city is the largest, northernmost municipality in North America. Geographically, Edmonton is situated at the boundary between prairie and boreal forest. The river valley constitutes the longest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America. Edmonton is home to Canada’s second-largest urban Aboriginal community. The City of Edmonton lies in the heart of Treaty No. 6 territory and honours the traditions and spirit of the area. For centuries this area has been a place of gathering, relationship building, harmony, balance, and commerce for many peoples. It was in this place that early relationships led to the creation of Treaty No. 6, the Province of Alberta, and the City of Edmonton. This deep history, and the subsequent migration of many new Canadians to the area, imbues Edmonton with a rich cultural and ethnic heritage. This diversity contributes to a dynamic urban landscape alive with arts and culture, business, research and development, and industry. Indicators for the next twelve years point to steady economic and population growth. As Edmonton’s economy flourishes, so does the spirit of revitalization. Edmonton is undergoing an unprecedented amount of infrastructure growth with major roadways, and streetscapes, and there has been significant development in neighbourhoods. Aspects of these provide public art opportunities through the City’s “Percent for Art to Provide and Encourage Art in Public Areas” and “Public Art Transitory Program” policies. Edmonton’s spirit of optimism is reflected through its ever-evolving Public Art Collection. With more than 200 pieces, the Collection includes visual art from a variety of disciplines by local, national and international artists.

EAC Transitory Art Program Goals Short-term public art installations are important in changing the face of the city, increasing its livability and creativity for both citizens and visitors. The short-term nature of these projects helps to develop a greater understanding of public art as well as acceptance and demand for permanent public artworks. #YEGCANVAS will stimulate dialogue and new ways of thinking about neighborhoods and the public realm, inspire local artists, and cultivate future public artists and audiences. The Transitory program focuses on: high impact public art interventions in public areas with the potential to shift perspectives of public spaces in Edmonton; mentorship and training resources for Edmonton-based artists; high quality artworks, and projects which, in this case, focus on customary (traditonal) techniques, contemporary techniques, composition, and cultural interventions in public spaces.. Permanent public art is a complex art field. #YEGCANVAS provides a highly visible and dynamic venue to artists emerging within their genres, in public art practice, and in Edmonton.

#YEGCANVAS Background and Context The Edmonton Arts Council is partnering with Pattison Outdoor Advertisting to turn the City of Edmonton into an outdoor gallery. The exhibition will focus on emerging, multicultural, and Aboriginal artists who work in a variety of visual media and craft. A six-month exhibition, #YEGCANVAS will feature reproductions of original artworks installed on billboards and LRT station posters across the city. Up to 45 artists will be selected to provide reproductions of their original works of art. Artwork images will be rotated throughout the city regularly in the following manner: • Billboards – 10 billboards will rotate three times (once every 8 weeks) for a total of 30 individual artworks. The billboard locations will change with each rotation. • LRT Station Posters – 15 images will be selected for display in 15 LRT station locations. These images will not be changed through the exhibition, however they will be moved to to various stations every 8 weeks.
