New Staff Orientation – Working With Preschoolers

Calm and comfortable spaces Preschoolers need environments that feel safe, comfortable, and calm to support their physical and mental well-being. Use the questions below to rate the room where preschoolers are cared for to determine if the surroundings are calm or whether they are overstimulating.

The classroom walls are a soothing color The walls are decorated, but not busy or distracting Furniture is a soothing color and not too distracting Lighting is subdued and calming Few or no loud noisy toys are in the room The noise level in and near the room is at a comfortable level Few brightly colored hanging objects, including banners, signs, or mobiles Minimal clutter on walls, floors, and in play spaces Nature items are added for interest and beauty The overall environment is pleasing to look at Classroom routines are visually posted and are predictable Adults are kind, responsive and nurturing
