2016 CAMPAIGN BRIEF CREATIVE RANKINGS

Once again Japanese powerhouse agency, Dentsu Inc Tokyo has topped the Campaign Brief Asia Creative Rankings. It’s a familiar position for Dentsu Tokyo as they have been #1 in our Rankings since 2011. In 2016 they didn’t have it all their own way with Ogilvy & Mather knocking off Dentsu as the top creative Network. This year also saw Ogilvy & Mather Singapore bounce back to narowly edge out the consistant top 3 agency, McCann Mumbai. It was also a great performance from BBDO with Bangkok, Malaysia and Mumbai all in this year’s top 10 Agencies. This year’s Campaign Brief Asia Creative Rankings sees three new agencies join three perennial performers in the 2016 Top 6. Following a strong performance at this year’s awards shows Ogilvy & Mather Singapore (#2), BBDO Proximity Bangkok (#5) and Hakuhodo Kettle Tokyo (#6) join Dentsu Tokyo (#1), McCann Worldgroup Mumbai (#3) and Hakuhodo Tokyo (#4) in the Top 6 best performing creative agencies. (see page 19). The Most Awarded Network Creative Ranking Table (see page 27) has also seen a reshuffle with Ogilvy & Mather and BBDO placed above Dentsu in the Top 3. Hakuhodo, McCann and TBWA round out the Top 6. Ogilvy has 11 offices that contributed to their #1 Network ranking. BBDO has 9 offices that helped lift them to #2. (see page 28) McCann has been one of the consistent performers over recent year’s and their 5th placing in the

Network ranking is almost solely due to India, who contributed 1125pts of their 1475pts total. TBWA’s #6 position is lead by TBWA Hakuhodo at #11 overall, with TBWA Santiago Mangada Puno Philippines at #24 also performing well. Cheil Seoul’s improved showing (#9) saw the network increase a massive 7 places up to #7. Grey Worldwide jumped from #13 to #8, lead by the Singapore office. Y&R lost ground on 2014’s high #4 ranking, dropping to #9 overall. Y&R Malaysia was their best performer at #28, but their previous top agencies Red Fuse Hong Kong (#141) and Y&R Singapore (#153) dropped away badly. Leo Burnett rises one spot in the Network Ranking, and surprisingly, their best performing office is Leo Burnett Solutions in Sri Lanka at #27. Thailand and Jakarta both contributed but their creative performances in Singapore,

Malaysia, India and Japan remain disappointing. The Saatchi & Saatchi network improved four places overall to #11 thanks to their Singapore office that re-entered the Creative Ranking table at #14. J Walter Thompson dropped three spots to #12 Network overall. Their best performer was the Thailand office at #29 then Shanghai at #72. ADK and Innocean Worldwide both had substantial gains with ADK Taiwan and Innocean Seoul both jumping up into the Agency Ranking Top 20 at #20 and #15 respectively. MullenLowe and DDB join Y&R as the most disappointing Networks in these Campaign Brief Creative Rankings. MullenLowe dropped from #8 to #15 with Singapore the highest ranked at #36. The award shows that count in the CB Asia Creative Rankings and the other stuff you should be aware of Just like the various sporting rankings, these Campaign Brief Asia Creative Rankings are based solely on performances over the July 2015 to June 2016 Award show year. If you win an award at one of the shows we include here - you pick up points. What sets the Campaign Brief Asia Creative Rankings apart from other rankings around the world is that it is calculated solely on creative performance at the major regional and international award shows. There is no submission or document received from agencies that is then judged. It is based only on the facts ie. creative award wins. Importantly, we attribute an adjusted points value to each Gold, Silver and Bronze award won by each agency at each award show or festival. You might think this happens with other rankings systems, however this is not always the case. In some rankings a gold at Cannes scores the same as a gold at Spikes. Campaign Brief Asia weights award wins against the difficulty of winning and we will continue to review each award show each year. As an example, awards at AdFest and Spikes Asia are valued at: Grand Prix 40pts; Gold 30pts; Silver 20pts; and Bronze 10pts. The international shows count for more - for example, at the Cannes Lions, award wins are valued at: Grand Prix 75pts; Gold 60pts; Silver 40pts; Bronze 30pts, and some Shortlists 20pts. D&AD is harder to succeed at, so the points attributed reflect that: Black Pencil 150pts; Yellow Pencil 24

100pts; Graphite Pencil 60pts; and Wood Pencil 25pts. As has always traditionally been the case with the Campaign Brief Asia Creative Rankings, Print Craft, Radio Craft & Film Craft categories are not included. The reason is we considered this to be “double dipping” from agencies. For example, highly awarded print campaigns usually already winners in Print, Outdoor and Design categories - then are entered individually into, and go on to win, multiple craft awards. To include Print Craft skews the results of the Creative Rankings far too much in favour of specialist print agencies. We also don’t include Public Relations and Healthcare categories. This year we have moved the timing of the Creative Rankings to July. This means that Cannes Lions is the last show to be counted in each rankings. The new timing also allows us to each year produced a printed Campaign Brief Creative Ranking magazine for distribution to all delegates at the Spikes Asia Festival held in Singapore each September. The first show to be counted in the 2017 rankings is the recent Ad Stars 2016 Awards. The last show will be Cannes Lions 2017. Important note: The results of next year’s 2017 Creative Rankings will be added to these existing 2016 Creative Rankings as we revert back to our original 2 year, rolling Creative Rankings format. The regional shows from 2015-16 that are included in these Creative Rankings are: Ad Stars 2015 Spikes Asia 2015
