CANDIDATE BRIEF: FINANCIAL CONTROLLER About Social Finance Social Finance is a not for profit organisation working in partnership with government, the social sector and the financial community to enable sustainable social impact at scale. Since we began in 2007, Social Finance has mobilised over £100 million of social investment and designed a series of programmes to tackle social challenges. These include support for 2,000 short sentence offenders released from Peterborough Prison, 380 children on the edge of care in Essex, 2,500 disengaged teenagers, 600 homeless youth and 800 rough sleepers in London. We are also alleviating fuel poverty for over 2,300 families in Sunderland, enabling 15,000 families to access nursery places and free children’s services, and providing 7,500 affordable micro loans in Wales. Opportunity Social Finance has grown from two to over sixty five people over the last eight years and is now experiencing another period of rapid growth. This is an exciting opportunity to join the business as we grow. The role of the Financial Controller is to ensure that our strategic vision is matched with a sound financial future. This is an important appointment which would suit someone who may have held a senior role elsewhere but is now looking for some more flexibility or someone who has aspirations to take a more senior role in the future.

About You You will be a qualified accountant, be technically proficient, highly motivated, organised and be particularly attentive to detail. You will have had a number of years’ experience post qualification, working at a senior level contributing to the strategic development of the organisation. You will be able to build relationships with the senior leadership team and wider group of directors and associate directors so that over time they turn to you for support and

guidance. Over time, you will play a role in the development and implementation of Social Finance’s strategy. You should relish the prospect of working in a more entrepreneurial environment. It is essential that you are a good communicator, have experience of managing teams and have excellent Excel skills. The ideal candidate would have experience of working in a financial control environment and have used Sage. The financial controller will also lead the compliance function of Social Finance and therefore financial services experience would be preferred. Ideally you will have an understanding of and operated in an FCA regulated organization.

Preparation / reporting of annual budget and bi-monthly reforecasts. Preparation of statutory and management accounts. Monthly revenue review and cash flow forecasting. Preparation of financial updates for the board of directors. Responsibility for the payroll process: including input to payroll provider. Project accounting for grant based projects and the preparation of financial reports for grantors. Review of externally prepared accounts for the fund managed by Social Finance. External auditor, tax and fund administrator liaison. Completion of VAT returns. Identification of greater efficiencies that could be driven through purchasing. Responsibility for managing stakeholder pensions with pensions adviser.

Lead compliance officer. Responsibility for the completion of FCA and other financial compliance documentation including quarterly and annual returns to the FCA and maintaining CDD records and risk registers. Review of engagement letters, sales contracts and grant agreements. Review of pricing and operational detail for bids. Management and coaching of a bookkeeper and part time compliance resource. Management of relationship with CCL, Social Finance’s compliance consultancy. Maintaining up to date records with Companies House. Other ad hoc duties as required. For example, oversight of insurance policies for multiple entities, incorporation of SPV entities, review of company policies and procedures, assistance with tenders and proposals submitted by the wider team.
