Vince, when you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up! If you asked my mother, she would tell you I that I had said I wanted to be a cowboy, but I am not sure where that came from. I did have the opportunity to realize my earlier dream of becoming a rugby-playing engineer at the Royal Military College of Canada. I have since worked in a variety of fields in my 27-year career as an army officer. In a care-free world, I would love for my job to be spending all my time with my family and friends while travelling the world and enjoying the great outdoors trekking, skiing, orienteering, diving and white-water canoeing. Choosing to complete an Executive MBA is a big consideration. What was the turning point for you, Vince, in determining that the Telfer Executive MBA Program was the right choice for you? I have always considered doing an MBA but the timing and format were never a quite right fit for me. The turning point for me in choosing the Telfer Executive MBA was when I understood that the Program’s main feature was about consulting with partner companies to solve genuine business challenges from a general manager perspective in a real-world environment — what I am trying to say is that it is the Global, Practical and Relevant aspect of the Program that is attractive to me, but without using the actual ‘buzzwords’. I have already started to put the consulting approach into practice at work and in my personal life, and I am very excited about the two trips: to Silicon Valley and International Consulting trip.

What qualities do you admire in a mentor? Do you have someone you consider a strong mentor in your own life? I admire a leader who really understands the difference between management and leadership. I have grown to know that leadership is behaviour and certainly not a position or a rank. I try to emulate those leaders who are able to move beyond mentoring and into coaching individuals and teams to help them fully realize their potential. The strong leaders in my life have humbly helped create a vision, shape the future, orchestrate change, and able to inspire me and others into action and towards achieving amazing results which are beyond expectations. The best have provided me with wisdom, judgment, integrity and direction and then let me find my own way.
