Canned Food Drive Results! Our Annual Canned Food Drive is one of our oldest running traditions here at Carmel Elementary. Donations support the Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank, and our students and families are always incredibly generous to support others in need. We had a lot of fun collecting food items and tracking classroom participation this year! Here’s a look at the totals for number of food items donated by class: 1st place: HEPP – 1,278 2nd place: HRENO – 1,023 3rd place: WHITE – 803 4th place: MORRIS – 600 Honorable Mentions: SELM (386), ADAMS (335), and NILO (300) As a school, we collected 8,074 food items, totaling 7,074 pounds! This will provide close to 2,350 meals for families and kids here in Hamilton County! THANK YOU for this amazing gift!

The Tigers in Action committee hosted a survey in the first semester, asking students, “What do you think will make this school year the best one yet?” The top responses were: “Being a good role model and trying new things!” This semester, students will be asked these follow-up questions: “How can you be a good role model? What new thing do you want to try this new year?” We will be sharing in Tiger Tales some of the answers from students to both of these questions! We are becoming wonderful leaders here at CE. Being a good role model and trying something new can help with all of the Leadership Habits!

School Bus Safety Tips from Golisano Children's Hospital ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Have a safe place to wait for the bus, away from traffic and the street. Arrive at the bus stop on time. Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals for you to enter. Quickly find a seat and sit down. Never put your head or arms out of the window on the bus. Keep aisles clear of backpacks. Use seat belts if available. When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk 10 giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. The bus driver can see you best when you are away from the bus. He or she will signal to you when you can cross the street.

Chemistry is a Blast at Carmel Elementary! We were delighted to welcome Guy Hansen, a chemist from Eli Lilly, to school last week. He presented "Chemistry is a Blast" and wowed our students (and staff!) with a lot of great hands-on experiments. Students couldn’t contain their enthusiasm after his engaging presentation!

Attention, 5th Grade Parents! It is difficult to imagine, but it is time to begin thinking about the transition of your 5th grade elementary student to middle school. We have a number of events scheduled to help in making this transition smooth and comfortable for all students. Important dates that you will want to mark on your calendar include: Parent Scheduling Information Night is an evening event for parents only. During this presentation, administration and counseling will share information about the scheduling process and course offerings. A Program of Studies will be emailed during the 1st couple of weeks in January if you wish to preview this information in advance. The Scheduling Information Night will take place on Wednesday, February 1st beginning at 6:30pm in the Carmel Middle School Auditorium. An Activity Night is also scheduled for our feeder elementary schools. This is an event for students only. Students take a tour of our school, play games, learn more about our performing arts classes, enjoy pizza and a middle school basketball game. Carmel Elementary and Cherry Tree – January 24th from 3:45-5:45 PM; Orchard Park and Smoky Row – January 25th from 3:45-5:45 PM Carmel Middle School Counselors will visit the elementary schools in early - mid February to begin the scheduling process. Counselors will provide information that will assist students in completing their class schedule online. Parents will have the opportunity to view the student’s selected course requests online following these presentations. Open House for Parents and Students will be held on April 19th from 5:30-7:30. This is a great opportunity for the whole family to come in and tour our building, learn more about clubs and activities, and talk with key staff at Carmel Middle School. This is an informal event, come whenever fits in your schedule. In addition, a team of Carmel Middle School 6th Graders will accompany building administration on a visit to each feeder elementary school during the 4th quarter to get to know our future Cougars and answer any student questions. Finally, our Performing Arts Department is excited to host TRY ON events in February. This is not an audition, as all students are eligible to participate in performing arts (band, choir, orchestra). The try ons allow our directors and students to find the most successful fit. Sign ups are required to attend a try on. The try on link is located here. Dates for Try On's: Feb. 1st , 6th , and 8th from 3:30-6:30pm Make Up Try On Date: Feb 15th from 3:30-6:30pm Additionally, the Parent Information Night for Performing Arts (after students try on instruments and express interest in the programming) is on February 28th at 6:30pm. We are so excited to welcome our new Cougars to Carmel Middle School. As we work through the activities identified, feel free to contact me with any questions.
