CAREER ADVANTAGE PROGRAM Pre-Application Student User Guide 2017-2018

TIME COMMITMENT 4-6 hours per month, plus attendance at mandatory events. Students who cannot meet the time requirements of this program will be removed from CAP. We will not make exceptions to this policy.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS Please choose three questions to answer (pick 3 out of 4 questions). All answers should be in complete sentences and should be about 250 words.

Describe the world you came from and how that has shaped who you are today.

What other activities are you involved with at USC and Marshall? What leadership positions have you committed to for next year? How do you plan to balance your commitments?

Describe an experience where you were unsuccessful in achieving your goal. How did you handle the situation and what lessons did you learn from this experience?

HELPFUL APPLICATION HINTS  Be honest but professional with your answers to these questions.  Do not discuss race, politics or gender in your answers – be aware of the professional nature of this application.  Proper grammar and spelling are essential to creating a positive first impression.  When choosing a mentor, consider life philosophies and their student preferences in addition to their industry or field.

WHO CAN APPLY: Sophomore, Junior, and Senior business majors only. GPA REQUIREMENTS: Priority will be given to applicants with GPAs of 2.8 and higher. (Note: First year transfer students, please use your transfer institution GPA for your overall GPA and enter “0” for your Marshall GPA). MENTOR SELECTION: Make sure you review your mentors’ preferences for preapproval requirement, class year, whether you have access to transportation, etc. BEFORE you select them. (Example: if you are a sophomore and the mentor indicates they only will take only juniors or seniors, you will need to select a different mentor.)
