Growing Need for Caregivers - Is Caregiving for You?

ResCare HomeCare Caregiver Testimonials

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, currently in the United States we have approximately 50 million residents over the age of 65. The need for Caregivers is forecasted to grow by almost 70% between 2010 and 2020. Unpaid Caregivers provide an estimated 90% of the long-term care. Many of us have provided unpaid care for a lovedone and in doing so we have gained valuable caregiving experience. ResCare HomeCare, the nation’s largest human services provider, feels it is important to share what it means to be a Caregiver. Many of our Caregivers worked in other professions and found their way to us based on their life caregiving experience. Hoping our Caregiver testimonials might inspire someone with life experience that has never considered being a Caregiver, enter into the caregiving field. Early childhood education is imperative in building a solid foundation for children’s positive learning development with families and children from birth to eight years of age. Have you ever thought the field of education might be for you? Early childhood education is a large field, encompassing a variety of careers including, preschool teachers and early educators. These early educators typically work in child care centers, Head

ton, and Apollo high schools. The topic trainings included how aligning early learning standards can support the learning for the high school students and prepares them to directly work with children in the Child Oriented Occupational Preschools (COOP) on the high school campuses. Other trainings were provided by Catholic Charities West Side Head Start on first impressions and GCC faculty presented cognitive play, discipline

WSHS Helps Homeless Mom Find Success Written by Holly Yzquierdo. Edited by Martín Lozano. Having a baby is life changing. For a homeless, single mother of infant twins, Shannon’s obstacles were overwhelming. Early Head Start Determined to give her daughters the best life possible, Shannon enrolled her children into the Westside Head Start/Early Head Start home visitation program after making temporary living arrangements. Early Head Start teaches parents of infants and toddlers parenting skills and child development for ages 0-3. A Growing Family When the twin’s father came back to Shannon’s life, the family’s dynamic changed. Soon, Shannon became pregnant again and enrolled as a pregnant mother in the Home Based program. During her pregnancy, Shannon enrolled in online courses to become a medical assistant. When the twins turned one year old, they were transferred to an Early Head Start classroom. Shannon continued to receive home visitation services when the new baby was born. Westside Head Start is committed to helping the whole family and works to engage and equip mothers and fathers to be great parents. After a while, the father started participating in classes to improve his parenting and help his children. A Bright Future Once Shannon’s baby turned one year old, she was transferred to an Early Head Start classroom. This allowed Shannon to continue her education, and attend college classes on campus. A lot has changed for Shannon and her family over the years. This year, the baby transitioned to a 3-yearold Head Start classroom. The twins attended

Head Start for two years, are now enrolled in Kindergarten, and are expected to thrive. The family has also found new security, both adults are working and they have become first time home owners. Changes for Westside Head Start Catholic Charities Westside Head Start helps families in transition or experiencing every day hardships. Staff work with families in their homes and dozens of classrooms in western Maricopa County. On July 1, 2016 Westside Head Start became a grantee program and began making improvements. Some classrooms now offer full day opportunities that will make it easier for working parents to take advantage of the program. In half day sessions there will now be two teachers in each classroom with each teacher facilitating one session. This change will allow for more planning, professional development and training, and greater opportunities for teachers to develop positive and productive relationships with children and families. Summer 2017 Investigation jobs take 7 spots in the top 50 jobs you can get without a college degree Investigations as a career As students try to figure out what they want to do for a career, investigation based jobs are plentiful and well paying. Some pay more than careers requiring a 4-year degree. Having a degree or training in investigations, additionally enhances your job marketability. A recent study by 24/7 Wall St. reviewed median annual wage estimates for all occupations with the Bureau of Labor Statistics and published the top 50 well-paying jobs you can get without a college degree. While a degree is not a requirement, many employers prefer candidates with experience, some college or specific vocational training and certification. The median annual wage across all occupations in the US is $37,040.

Glendale’s fifth annual “Stand Up for Veterans” will be held 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 23 at Glendale Community College, 6000 W. Olive Ave. More than 1,000 veterans have attended the community outreach event in previous years. “The reason I started this event was to help struggling veterans regain their dignity and pride. Stand Up does just that,” said Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers, who initiated the Glendale Stand Up event five years ago. “They can potentially walk into the event without a job and bogged down with legal issues, and they can walk out of the event gainfully employed with, essentially, a clean slate. That truly can change someone’s life for the better.” A new offering at this year’s event will be Glendale Community College’s Veteran Services Center. The center provides veteran and military students and their families one-onone help getting into college and staying on the path of success. The VSC is a one-stop facility offering services, including admissions, financial aid, advisement, career services, referrals and specific military-related resources.

Summer 2017 Do You Really Need Life Insurance?

Peoria Accelerated students prepares students for the challenges and choices of the 21st century

Peoria Accelerated Offers Something Better for High School Students While Arizona is in the midst of a devastating opioid epidemic, Peoria Accelerated High School is excited to announce it will be doing its part to educate students and prevent substance abuse among the communities it serves. Earlier this summer, Peoria Accelerated was one of 38 Arizona high schools awarded a competitive grant through the High School Health and Wellness Program, which is overseen by the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith, and Family. The grant will allow Peoria Accelerated to implement an evidence-based prevention pro-

gram campus-wide. This opportunity could not come at a better time for Peoria Accelerated, its students, and its families as Governor Ducey declared a public-health emergency this summer in response to the opioid epidemic. The primary aim of the program is to prevent substance abuse among students and to provide them with healthy, positive alternatives to risky behaviors and the use of drugs. In other words, the school wants its students to know there is always “something better” than drugs. Located at 8885 West Peoria Avenue, Peoria Accelerated High School is a public charter high school serving grades 9-12. Currently the school offers Monday-Thursday instruction, flexible schedules, credit recovery, and free school bus transportation to Glendale, El Mirage, and Surprise. For more information about Peoria Accelerated High School and its grant program Something Better, contact the school leader, Amanda Bachler at 623.979.0031 or visit the school’s website www.peoriabulldogs.com.

By Yvonne J Knaack CLU State Farm® agent Life insurance isn’t just for married couples with children. The need for life insurance is much broader. “Anybody who would experience a financial loss or an emotional loss after a death will need some type of life insurance,” says Marvin Feldman, president and CEO of the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education. Who is it for? Having dependents of any kind necessitates life insurYvonne Knaack CLU, Agent ance. Here are examples: • Unmarried couples. Life insur- [email protected] ance can help provide for them. • Stay-at-home spouses. Life insurance isn’t just for breadwinners. It can help cover the cost of replacing the services of stay-at-home parents. • Single parents. These individuals are typically the sole source of support for their children. Life insurance can help provide for children financially should their parent die. • Singles. Single individuals could be responsible for aging parents or may have significant debt. “Life insurance helps make sure those debts are paid,” Feldman says. • Retirees. Insurance can help replace income from part-time work, Social Security benefits, pensions or other employer benefits. It helps spouses continue living as they’re accustomed. • Empty nesters. Older adults may have custody of a grandchild or provide support for other family members. Life insurance may help this care to continue. • Business owners. Life insurance has many benefits for business owners, such as helping protect family members from taking on a person’s professional debt, or providing funds for survivors to buy out the deceased’s interest. What can it cover? Beyond paying for final expenses, loved ones can put these death benefits toward: • Paying off debt • Financing an education • Settling estate taxes • Contributing to charity • Creating an inheritance • Replacing income • Replacing employer benefits Are there additional benefits? Some policies also offer living benefits. Whole policies and universal life policies accumulate value that can be tapped as retirement income or used to help cover unexpected expenses. Universal life policies also may have riders allowing chronically ill policyholders to withdraw the face amount during their lifetimes to help cover long-term care costs or to prepare loved ones financially before passing. 12 Weeks to a Better Life!

The Arizona School of Dental Assisting is the Fast and Affordable Way to Change Your Life! Why spend up to 11⁄2 years becoming a dental assistant when you can do it in a 1⁄4 of the time and a 1⁄4 of the cost!

Lisa Stevenson, President of Arizona School of Dental Assisting

Arizona School of Dental Assisting

“Hi my name is Christina, I’m 36 years old with 3 children, 18,16,&13. I had no idea where my life was headed, until I stumbled across Arizona School of Dental Assisting (ASDA) I was so nervous in the beginning and all through school, I started working .....this career field has been the best experience I’ve ever had! I love it so much, I love working with the patients, it makes me happy to help others. My children are very happy to see me smiling, happy doing something I never imagined doing. Dreams do come true. Lisa and her Staff have been very uplifting and helpful. My experience has been amazing. Christina Munoz Arizona School of Dental Assisting, Student

“Thank you to all you guys for being the amazing people you are! The office I got hired at is 5 miles from my house and I had my first day today and I really like it!” Bridget C. Arizona School of Dental Assisting, Student

“I’m Vanessa and I’d highly recommend this lively 12 week course, to anyone who is interested in becoming a dental assistant. The classes last 3 short hours, for 2 days a week! Before I found Arizona School of Dental Assisting, I looked into other dental assisting courses, and they were anywhere from 9 to 14 months and the prices were way too high. Brittany, and Whittney being the excellent teachers that they are, keep the classes simple, interesting, and enjoyable. My class began sometime in September of 2016, and before the end of the course (November 2016) I was hired at a wonderful office, off my externship. Being 3 months later, I am currently being cross trained as a general dental assistant, and as an orthodontic assistant. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome! GO ASDA!”

Well, here at the Arizona School of Dental Assisting we just made it even easier to obtain that dream! Not only do we have a classroom based program, we have now opened up an online portion for those of you that cannot come to school. The online option leaves you with only the clinicals to complete to graduate as a dental assistant. Work at your own pace, 2 to 12 weeks to complete the program! Go to our website to sign up for our online class at class.azdentalassistants.com
