Building a Better Barrhead Money is being made available for projects to improve priority areas in Barrhead through East Renfrewshire Council and a grant from the Scottish Government's Community Choices Fund. This initiative is being driven by a group of local community members who have formed the Better Barrhead Steering Group. Any local community, voluntary or non-profit organisation can apply to the fund, even informal groups. Funding of £250 to £5000 is available to put each idea into action. Projects must benefit the target areas of Auchenback, Dunterlie, East Arthurlie, Dovecothall, Dalmeny or Springhill. The Steering Group will gather all proposals put forward. The deadline is Monday 15th January. Application forms are available from Barrhead Council Offices, the Library in the Foundry and Auchenback Resource Centre or you can contact [email protected] or call 0141 577 3309 to request a form. Once all applications have been received, a community event (called participatory budgeting) will take place at St John's Church Hall on Saturday 3rd March. Applicants will be asked to present their idea or project to the community in attendance and the community will then vote for the projects they feel should receive funding.

The West of Scotland Breast Screening Unit will be arriving in Barrhead at the end of January. It will be situated in Barrhead Health and Care Centre for a few months and women from Barrhead and Neilston who are registered with a local GP and are eligible for screening will be invited along for a mammogram. East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership Health Improvement Team will be working with the West of Scotland Screening team to raise awareness of the benefits of screening and the importance of detecting cancer early by going along for your mammogram. There will be information stands in various locations in Barrhead during late January and early February and staff will be available to help answer any questions you have about the screening process and encourage uptake of screening appointments. Breast cancer remains the most common cancer for women in Scotland but it’s also treatable when caught early.
