CASE STUDY

Consultant to the Technical Director Elektronnaya Moskva

Elektronnaya Moskva Manages Millions of Files With Hitachi File, Content and Flash Solution Challenge: Simplify and speed up file directory management, and reduce backup times. Solution: Increase data storage to 150TB with a solution that supports operations for tens of millions of files. Outcome: Stored data can be increased monthly without decreasing file listing speeds and directory management capabilities. The Challenge Manage Millions of Files Moscow-based Elektronnaya Moskva, a leading provider of integrated IT solutions, houses over 140 million files and 60,000 active users. The company specializes in the implementation of telecommunications projects by offering infrastructure and services via its reliable network of proprietary data centers, which are designed for resource-intensive applications. Its data centers house more than 200 high-load, socially significant IT systems, including Moscow City Government’s e-document management system. The unified e-document management system Elektronnaya Moskva installed in 2011 supports a full suite of records as well as organizational and administrative document functions. The system is designed to organize e-document flows

from creation to final version. Safety and reliability are of great concern. User numbers and document volumes have continued to grow from the moment the project went live. At present, the system houses more than 27 million documents (more than 140 million files) and serves more than 60,000 active users, who log on more than 24,000 times a day. Dynamic growth in user numbers and inquiries have required modifications to the initial configuration and the transformation of the unstructured data archive. Elektronnaya Moskva projects utilize cloud systems that centralize data used by services and safeguard and provide access to it from any device from anywhere in the world. Data processing and storage are also guaranteed to be secure in the cloud.

Quick access to data. Storage of tens of millions of files in flat file folders. File listing time reduced from 36 to 4 hours. Improved data management performance.

During the project it became clear that the technologies used by Elektronnaya Moskva required an upgrade. In particular, when its e-document system first came online, it used standard x86 servers and Linux as an operating system. NFS storage nodes were created on this foundation. With time, the volume of unstructured data in the e-document system grew so large that the old technological solutions couldn’t cope with it. With data volume growing at a rapid rate and millions of new files being created every year, Elektronnaya Moskva needed to simplify and speed up file directory management, as well as reduce backup times. Hitachi file and content, and flash solutions helped the company meet these challenges.

The Solution Unified File and Flash HDS specialists analyzed the data use patterns in the e-document system and suggested a hardware and software suite to the company that would facilitate file access using NFS protocol. This approach allowed data storage to increase to 150TB while supporting operations with tens of millions of files. This hardware and software suite consists of Hitachi Unified Storage 150 (HUS 150) and two Hitachi NAS Platform (HNAS) 4060 file servers clustered to facilitate fail-safe operation. Special attention was placed on operational speed with big data using NFS: Unique file access technologies such as tiered file system (TFS) were used to increase it. These technologies permit metadata to be kept separate from files and for them to be stored on enterprise-level storage using Hitachi Accelerated Flash. “The entire life cycle of internal documents – composition, harmonization and execution – occurs electronically. processing. Using Hitachi Accelerated Flash allows us to control metadata and file storage levels, use innovative error correcting code (ECC), and improve data management performance beyond that which is possible with SSDs (solid state disks),” explains Consultant to the Technical Director of Elektronnaya Moskva, Timur Malin.

The Benefits Simplified Operations, Increased Processing Speed Hardware-accelerated NFS HDS File and access, the newest snapshot Content Solutions data protection technologies White Paper (HNAS snapshots), storage DOWNLOAD system accessibility, and other solutions permitted the entire technological architecture of the project to be updated. Before transitioning to the upgraded IT infrastructure, Elektronnaya Moskva stored in the realm of 50 million files: At present, this volume has almost tripled. In addition to solving the problem of storing a large quantity of files and their backups, HDS was able to simplify and speed up file directory management. After installing Hitachi NAS Platform technologies, mean file-listing time in flat directories containing a large volume of data was reduced nine times, from 36 to 4 hours. Moreover, during the transition to the new data storage system, adding disk space to the system was simplified: Many processes became automated, and load equalization across the entire space now happens automatically with the help of HNAS internal software. Moreover, system load monitoring software (Hitachi Tuning Manager) was installed. With its assistance, app developers may now analyze the effect of new versions of the software on the hardware of the document storage system. Consequently, updated versions of the software will not negatively impact the performance of the e-document system.

Additional work was performed on the backup system. The old architecture complicated the process because the flat document storage structure was incapable of processing such large volumes of information. With the aid of TFS in HNAS, file structure listing time was reduced, and, as a result, regular backups of all system files was set up. With an efficient HUS 150 and a cluster of HNAS 4060 file servers, the transition to a modern data storage system and the introduction of new software was accomplished. The solution completely transformed the IT architecture of the project and allowed for processing volumes to be expanded, the system’s operation to be simplified, its speed increased, and for the backup situation to be resolved. “Today, our e-document system is used by a large number of state institutions, such as the Mayor’s Office, the Moscow City Government, and the Deputy Mayor of Moscow’s Office, as well as various departments, committees, prefectures, councils and territorial agencies,” says Malin. “Naturally, we have to handle legally significant documents and civil filings in accordance with federal law. Using the Hitachi solution gives us the ability to expand the amount of data we store every month without decreasing file listing speeds and directory management capabilities,” he concludes.
