CHAIRMAN’S INTRODUCTION Welcome to the 2014 Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales On behalf of the Board and staff of Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) I would like to welcome you to the third running of GRV's Ready 2 Race (R2R) sales. We at GRV are committed to providing the best ownership experience possible in Victorian greyhound racing and believe the R2R series is a great first step in becoming involved in the sport. There are more than 20,000 people directly involved in greyhound racing in Victoria whether they are owners, trainers, breeders, catchers or staff. The Victorian greyhound racing industry is worth more than $300 million to the Victorian economy and more than $41 million is distributed in prize money annually. There has never been a better time to be involved in the sport and this series provides the perfect platform for you to join us. This year, there are almost 150 greyhounds available for purchase and with the incentives provided by speciality races for greyhounds sold at R2R, the opportunity to buy is better than ever. Driving ownership in our sport is a key growth strategy for the organisation. Through research, we have found that as soon as people engage with our sport they begin to love it. They want to come back and they want to be involved. It is the emotive nature of the sport, the fast, fun and friendly environment that characterises the industry and the thrill of the chase that makes greyhound ownership so exciting. READY 2 RACE SALES MAKING THE ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ OUT OF BUYING A GREYHOUND By Andrew Copley

Leading trainer Robert Britton is so passionate about the Ready 2 Race Sales concept that he is a regular visitor to the American equivalent, held twice a year in Abilene, Kansas. Britton has purchased a number of American greyhounds through the Abilene auctions, and he’ll take a keen interest in this month’s Ready 2 Race Sales at Bendigo, which will be running for the third straight year. “Outside of the Ready 2 Race auction series it’s damn near impossible to find a dog for someone at a reasonable price,” said Britton, who is regularly approached by prospective owners wanting him to buy a greyhound on their behalf. “This way (the R2R Sales) a trainer can go along, use his judgment and, with the assistance of the owners, get them into the sport.” “To watch a greyhound walk around the (parade) yard, it doesn’t take much of an expert to work out one that looks well prepared and a quality type of greyhound against something that’s maybe a little bit poor.” “A lot of people study the trials (heat replays) because there’s often a dog there that is blocked for a run or doesn’t get a clear run, and if you’re using your judgment you might be able to get a bargain along the way with a greyhound that may have won with a clear run.”

Britton pointed to Kiss Me Ketut, who was sold at the inaugural 2012 Ready 2 Race Sales for $21,000 before winning in excess of $200,000 in prize money, as an example of the potential upside with purchasing a young greyhound. “A lot of these dogs are around 18 months old, and we know that greyhounds don’t really find their best at that age, so there can be a lot of improvement.” “While Kiss Me Ketut went well in the Ready 2 Race series, no one would have expected him to achieve what he achieved,” Britton said. Britton said that while America’s Ready 2 Race Sales is currently the benchmark for greyhound sales around the world because of its consistently high quality stock up for sale, he believes that the GRV series has the potential to consistently produce similar quality. “It all starts with the breeders,” Britton said. “I believe there is the opportunity there for (Victorian) breeders to actually breed dedicated for this auction, and then they’ll get their pay packet every year purely on the auction. I can

see that happening in years down the track.” “People will go there with their very best dogs to get the very best price, and go home very satisfied,” he said. Adding weight to Britton’s argument is the interest levels he has witnessed firsthand over the past 12 months. “Since the 2013 Ready 2 Race Sales I have received enquiries from at least 80 prospective owners wanting me to help them buy a dog at the 2014 series, so I expect there to be plenty of buyers at the Sales at Bendigo this year,” he said. Britton said the concept has the potential to grow significantly in Victoria, and that breeders shouldn’t not be concerned about selling a quality greyhound through the Ready 2 Race Sales, as this will enhance the currency of their pups in the years that follow. FIRST TIME OWNERS LOVING THE TOGETHERNESS OF GREYHOUND RACING

The next generation of greyhound owners may be green, but they appreciate the purity of greyhound racing. While many seasoned participants are only interested in greyhounds with city potential, the new age owner, the likes of which we will see at the 2014 Ready 2 Race Sales at Bendigo in November, are far more interested in the social benefits of the sport than monetary gain. Take David Symons, for instance, who bought his first greyhound with a group of former footy teammates at the 2013 Ready 2 Race Sales.

“It brings all the boys together. We’ve gone to see her race seven or eight times and watching your own greyhound race is the ultimate thrill, even though it’s out of your control.” “It’s a money can’t buy experience and I’m very keen to do it again.” “She usually only races for Tier 3 prize money but it’s exciting regardless.” After being purchased for $1,800 Pentapod has had a few different trainers and is now being prepared by Sebastian Gibilisco. He has had 31 starts for two wins and 11 placings, and had earned $2,460 in prize money (as at 29.10.14).

Symons, 21, grew up in Bendigo but he is now settled in Geelong, and the purchasing of a greyhound named Pentapod has kept him and his mates in regular contact even though they have gone their separate ways.

“It (the Ready 2 Race Sales) is the perfect way to get involved in the sport because you know what you are going to get,” Symons added.

“A group of five of us played footy together in the Under 18s at Golden Square. We decided to put in a bit of money together to buy a pup at the 2013 Ready 2 Race Sales.”

“I’ve had about 10 mates that are keen to jump on board with us in the next greyhound we buy.”

“We got some advice from a greyhound trainer named Don McCardy, who we knew through other circles, and he helped us pick out Pentapod.” “We all put in $350 each and it has been worth every cent.”

“With a young pup it is hit and miss but at Ready 2 Race you get what you pay for.”

“It’s looking like we will all put in about $1,000 each, so we should hopefully get something pretty good from the Sales this year.” There are plenty of other young people who, like Symons and his mates, would love to get into greyhound racing, and the Ready 2 Race Sales are the perfect way to make it happen.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE 2013 READY 2 RACE SALES By Andrew Copley

But here’s a system that should make it even easier.

Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales has built momentum since its inception in 2012.

Below the 83 greyhounds sold at the 2013 R2R Sales have been split into four groups, based on the percentage of prize money they have won in relation to their purchase price.

Mirrored on the world renowned USA sales the GRV Ready 2 Race Sales will again become bigger and better in 2014. Drilling down on a lot of the statistics from the 2013 R2R Sales at Bendigo – which comprised mostly unraced greyhounds and others with no more than a handful of starts – it is found that the results have been generally successful. A total of 83 pups were sold at the 2013 R2R Sales, and in the 11 months that have passed since then:

FIRST GROUP: Greyhounds that have already won back more than their purchase price

SECOND GROUP: Greyhounds that have won back at least half of their purchase price, but not their entire purchase price

- 86% of greyhounds have raced - 24% have won back more than their purchase price

Number of greyhounds: 20 (24%) Average heat time: 24.689sec Average sale price: $3,345


THIRD GROUP: Greyhounds that have won some prize money, but less than half their purchase price

- 44% have won back at least half of their purchase price

- They have compiled 1,247 starts, an average of 15 races each (one race every three weeks)


FOURTH GROUP: Greyhounds that have won no prize money

- The average sale price was $3,890, and those greyhounds have already collectively recouped an average of $3,590 (92.4% of the total outlay)

Considering that a lot of these greyhounds are not even half way through their careers, those stats will only get better.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PURCHASERS 1. Conditions of Sale Before bidding, all prospective purchasers should carefully read the 2014 Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales Terms and Conditions. Prospective purchasers must also register as a bidder and receive a bidding card. (Bidder registration can be undertaken on the day of the auction) 2. Payments of Lots Purchased Payments must be made on the day of purchase by cash, cheque, debit/credit card. If paying by card, if must have the VISA or MASTERCARD symbol. Payments shall be made as soon as the bidder has completed purchasing to avoid delays 3. GST The GST registration status of the Vendor is displayed on all Lots throughout the Catalogue. Where a Vendor is registered for GST, GST is additional 10% to the sale price. 4. Acknowledgement to Purchase After making the final bid on a greyhound, you will be asked to sign the official Tax Invoice slip. 5. Collection of Greyhounds Following payment, you will receive a release slip. This slip must be presented to the Kennel Staff. No Greyhound will be released without a release slip. When collecting the greyhound, you will be provided with a collar, lead, muzzle and bed for the greyhound. 6. Leaving the Kennels All Greyhounds leaving the kennel block MUST be wearing a muzzle

TERMS AND CONDITIONS 2014/2015 ‘READY 2 RACE GREYHOUND SALES’ 1 . ELIGIBILITY (a) All greyhounds nominated must be whelped in the period 1st August 2012 – 31st July 2013. (b) Greyhounds must race and finish in the heats and finals. (c) All greyhounds must be registered with Greyhound Racing Victoria and be Victorian bred. (d) Greyhounds must be ear branded, micro-chipped and have their 12 month (minimum C3) vaccination. (e) Unnamed greyhounds are eligible. (f) Raced greyhounds are eligible to enter (Raced greyhounds will compete against each other where possible). (g) Greyhounds will not lose their maiden status for wins in either the heats or finals.

2. THE ‘READY 2 RACE’ SERIES 2.1 Event (a) The Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales is a ‘series’ within the meaning of the GRV Rules (“Rules”), except for the purpose of LR30. 2.2 Testing In addition to any rights to conduct Swab tests under the Rules, the Stewards may swab test any greyhound competing in the heats and finals of the Ready 2 Race Series. 2.3 Prize money and bonuses (a) The top 8 prize money earners (prize money ONLY, excluding GOBIS, VBIS and R2R bonuses), will run in a special event worth $35,500 with $8,000 worth of nominator bonuses. The R2R top 8 final will be established from the greyhounds who earn the most prize money from all race starts between the period of Sunday 23rd November 2014 to Saturday 31st October 2015. The final will be held during the Melbourne Cup carnival in November 2015. (b) There will be a mid-year R2R event for the top 8 prize money earners as at 20th June 2015 (prize money ONLY, excluding GOBIS, VBIS and R2R bonuses) to be held at Bendigo which will be worth $10,000 with $2,000 in nominator bonuses. (c) To be eligible for bonus prize money, greyhounds must be sold through the ‘Ready 2 Race Greyhound sales’ auction (d) Greyhounds will race for total prize money of $355 in the heats and finals. (e) Ready 2 Race trial results are not considered when assessing a greyhound’s eligibility for actual race nominations or starts. A greyhound which has only previously competed in a R2R trial is deemed eligible for a debutant event. (f) Heats and finals will not be recorded against the greyhound’s history. 2.4 Positive Swabs (a) If a greyhound tests positive to a prohibited substance:

(i) the Rules relating to prohibited substances will apply; and

(ii) In addition to any rights, remedies or consequences that may apply under the rules relating to prohibited substances:

(a) the greyhound will be disqualified from the ‘Ready 2 Race series’, (b) the vendor, trainer or any other person will forfeit any prize money won; (c) the sale of the greyhound will become void and purchaser will be refunded in full; (b) GRV shall not be liable for any costs incurred by the vendor or the purchaser as a result of:

(i) a greyhound testing positive to a prohibited substance; or

(ii) the matters referred to in paragraph ((a)(ii)(c)) above.

3. THE ‘READY 2 RACE’ AUCTION 3.1 The Auction (a) A vendor is bound by these terms and conditions by offering a greyhound for sale by auction. (b) An agent (which includes an auctioneer) is bound by these terms and conditions by conducting an auction sale. (c) A buyer is bound by these terms and conditions by bidding at auction. (d) In these terms the expression auctioneer, agent, buyer and vendor respectively includes the servants, contractors, agents of each of them. The auctioneer, agent, buyer and vendor shall be wholly responsible for the acts and omissions of their respective servants, contracts and permits, the vendor’s agent. (e) These terms and conditions are subject to legislation or regulation in the State of Victoria and in the event of any conflict, then the applicable legislation or regulation will prevail. The provisions of these terms and conditions are in addition to, and do not derogate from, the duties and rights of vendors, agents and buyers set out in legislation and regulation in the State in which the auction is conducted. (f) The auction will be conducted by an accredited auctioneer who is a member of the Australian Auctioneers & Valuers Association. There will be no internet or online bidding. (g) All bidders must be registered with GRV. (h) Only registered bidders can bid on a greyhound. (i) Bidders will be given a registration number to bid with. Bidders must raise their hand to bid for a greyhound. No further bids will be taken after the fall of the hammer. (j) Any person who advances a bid on the lot shall do so on the express condition and understanding that should that person’s bid be the highest bid and such bid accepted by the vendor then that person will be held personally liable for the price so agreed upon, regardless of the fact that they may be acting on behalf of another party, either disclosed or undisclosed to the vendor or his agents, provided however, that this condition shall not in any way negate the vendor’s right to claim against any principal and in such case the bidders liability shall be constructed to be by way of guarantee. (k) Should any dispute arise between two or more parties the auctioneer shall adjudicate the dispute and his decision shall be final and binding. 3.2 Post Auction Online Sale (i) All unsold Greyhounds will be afforded the opportunity to advertise online, on the GRV website under the Ready 2 Race link.

(ii) Greyhounds sold via the Post Auction Online Sale will not be eligible to compete in the Ready 2 Race series

(iii) Nominators must opt in to this service when nominating the Greyhound for the Auction.

3.3 Commission GRV will be entitled to a commission of 10%, to be deducted from the total purchase price of each lot. 3.4 Terms of Sale (a) Subject to any reserve price, and to the right prior to the fall of the hammer of the vendor to withdraw any lot without declaring the reserve, the highest bidder shall be the buyer. (b) The auction will be a ‘no reserve’ auction with a $500 minimum bid. If there is no bid the lot will be knocked down to the vendor for $500 (being the minimum bid) and a minimum commission of $50 will be due and payable, only if the vendor wishes for the greyhound to be included in the Ready 2 Race Series. (c) The auctioneer has the right to bid on behalf of the vendor provided that right is notified prior to the commencement of the sale and is subject to State law. (d) A bid cannot be made or accepted after the fall of the hammer unless, in accordance with clause 3.4(f), the auctioneer decides to put the lot up again. (e) The last price called by the auctioneer at the fall of the hammer shall be the amount at which the lot has been sold. (f) In the event of a disputed bid, the auctioneer is the sole arbitrator of the successful bidder or the auctioneer may decide to put the lot up again.

(g) The auctioneer may refuse to accept a bid which, in the auctioneer’s opinion, is not in the best interests of the vendor and need not give reasons for doing so. (h) A bidder shall be deemed to be a principal unless, prior to bidding, the bidder has given to the auctioneer a copy of written authority to bid for or on behalf of another person. (i) The successful bidder at the auction sale must give to the auctioneer at the fall of the hammer:

(i) the purchaser’s name; or

(ii) the bid card number which identifies the purchaser; or

(iii) the name of the person on whose behalf the successful bid was made; and

(j) The auction shall be conducted on the basis that the bid price shall be exclusive of Goods and Services Tax (GST). GST shall be added after the fall of the hammer for those sales subject to GST. (k) As soon as practicable after the fall of the hammer, the buyer shall if requested by the agent, sign the agreement for sale. (l) If the purchaser fails to comply with any of these conditions, the lot or lots in respect of which such failure is made may, if the auctioneer thinks fit, be put up again and resold. If upon such resale a lower price is obtained for any such lots than was obtained upon the first sale the difference in price shall be a debt due from the purchaser in default upon the first sale. 3.5 Payment (a) The purchaser must pay GRV within 30 minutes of the last greyhound sold. (b) Full payment must be made to GRV before the vendor releases the greyhound. (c) Payment shall be made in the form of a personal cheque made out to ‘Greyhound Racing Victoria’, eftpos, credit card, and cash payments will also be accepted. (d) Within a reasonable period after received funds have cleared, GRV will remit the purchase price to the vendor, less the 10% commission from the total sale price deducted in accordance with clause 3.3. (e) Title shall not pass to the purchaser until payment is made in full. The greyhound will be released to the purchaser once the purchaser has paid for the greyhound. The purchaser must arrange satisfactory transportation of the greyhound. (f) In the event that payment under clause 3.5(c) is made by personal cheque and that personal cheque does not clear in 3 business days:

(i) the vendor will be immediately entitled to demand the return of the greyhound;

(ii) within 24 hours of demand, the purchaser must: (a) make alternative arrangements for payment of the greyhound on terms satisfactory to both GRV and the vendor (in their sole and absolute discretion); or (b) return the greyhound to the vendor; and (iii) the purchaser will be liable to the vendor for any loss.

3.6 Risk and liability (a) Risk passes to the purchaser at the fall of the hammer. (b) Upon the fall of the hammer all responsibility for expenses, injury and forwarding instructions become that of the purchaser. Each lot shall be at the risk of the vendor in respect of any damage or injury, whether by disease, accident or otherwise, or whether caused by negligence of the auctioneer, unless such lots have been sold, in which latter case such lot shall be at the risk of the purchaser in all such respects from the acceptance of his bid or offer by the vendor. (c) The auctioneer and GRV do not accept any liability for the Greyhound. The Vendor and the Purchaser indemnify the auctioneer and GRV from any loss arising out of the Ready 2 Race Series and Ready 2 Race Auction. 3.7 Warranties, soundness of Greyhound, right of return & movement of purchase (a) The Vendor warrants that:

(i) the description, pedigree and all other information on the nomination form was correct at the time of nomination;

(ii) he or she has good title to the greyhound and is entitled to sell the greyhound; and

(iii) there has been no breach of the Rules in relation to the greyhound

(b) Unless otherwise announced at the auction, there is no guarantee of any kind as to the soundness, condition and quality of a greyhound. All greyhounds will be vetted prior to racing in the heats and finals. (c) Each lot is sold with all faults, if any. 3.8 Auctioneer (a) The auctioneer reserves the right, without giving any reason thereof, to withdraw any lots before or during the sale. (b) The auctioneer is to be considered the agent merely between vendor and purchaser and in all disputes arising from defect of title, wrong description, pedigree, warranty or otherwise, the purchaser and vendor must adjust the matter between themselves, and no lot is to be returned to the auctioneer. The auctioneer shall be under no liability for the loss, if any incurred by the vendor by reason of the failure on the part of the purchaser to complete his purchase. The name, description and address given by the vendor will in all cases be furnished to the purchaser if require, and in the case of any dispute the remedy of the buyer shall be against such vendor only and in case or under any circumstances against the auctioneer, who is to be regarded for all intents and purposes as agents for a disclosed principal. (c) The description, either as to quality, pedigree, engagements or otherwise for any lot offered is supplied by the vendor who alone is responsible for its accuracy and the auctioneer shall not be liable for any error in such description. 3.9 Withdrawing Greyhounds Greyhounds can be withdrawn from the sales if there is a genuine reason. GRV will determine if a suitable explanation has been provided for a withdrawn sale. A $100 penalty will be issued to nominators who do not provide an acceptable reason to withdraw.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What’s the first step in buying my first greyhound at the Ready 2 Race Sales? Gather your mates together, work out your budget and then contact someone that is experienced in the greyhound industry, ideally a greyhound trainer to assist in purchasing your greyhound. How do I find someone I can trust with the knowledge and experience to source and assist in buying a Ready 2 Race greyhound? Greyhound trainers should have the knowledge to spot a greyhound with potential at the Ready 2 Race Sales. By contacting a trainer prior to the Ready 2 Race Heats (17 November) it will give yourself and the trainer plenty of time to analyse all lots. Do I need to attend the heats on Monday 17 November? As a potential buyer, attending the heats is not necessary however could be very beneficial. Full results and video replays of the heats will be available on-line at www.grv.org.au/Ready2Race within 24 hours of the heats being run. How old are the greyhounds being sold and will they have raced before? The age range of participating greyhounds is between 16 and 27 months and some have race experience which is noted in their lot information. Can anyone bid at the auction? All bidders must be registered. Bidder registration can be undertaken on the day. It’s simple, and free. Registered bidders must also be registered participants of the Greyhound Racing controlling body in the state that they reside in. GRV will also be able to register new participants on the morning of the auction. How do I make a bid? Registered bidders will be given a numbered bid card and to place a bid this card must be raised and seen by the auctioneers. Do I need to attend the finals and auction on Saturday 22 November in order to buy a greyhound? All greyhounds must be purchased in person at the auction on 22 November, and greyhounds will change ownership upon completion of the transfer paperwork. If you can’t attend in person, make sure someone is authorised to purchase on your behalf. What happens to the greyhound after I purchase at auction? The new owners (or their nominated trainer) must take their purchased greyhounds with them from the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association on the Saturday. Are there any policies or procedures regarding transporting a greyhound from the Ready 2 Race Auction? Yes, to view the policy go to https://fasttrack.grv.org.au. The purpose of the ‘GRV Transportation of Greyhounds Policy’ is to assist participants in providing a safe and healthy environment for their greyhounds whilst being transported by road.

What is the format of racing? All greyhounds will compete once in four-dog fields in a heat on Monday 17 November at Bendigo over 425 metres. The heats will be graded according to age and race experience. All greyhounds will compete again in a final on the morning of Saturday 22 November (also over 425m at Bendigo), prior to the auction which will be held that afternoon. The finals will generally be graded depending on results in the heats, with greyhounds drawn to compete against others who had the same finishing position in their heats, (ie. First placegetters versus first placegetters; second placegetters versus second placegetters, and so on). How can I get a copy of the catalogue? Hard Copy catalogues will be available on request from GRV as well as being distributed to all GRV Clubs and available by Thursday 13 November. The downloadable version of the catalogue will be available at www.grv.org.au/ready2race on Thursday 6 November 2014. What should I look for in the catalogue? Check out the information about the Sire’s and Dam’s in the catalogue. For more information, you can do a greyhound search at https://fasttrack.grv.org.au. Do I have to pay in full on the day? Yes, all lots must be settled in full when purchasers have finished buying for the day. What forms of payment will be accepted? GRV will be accepting payments made by cash, credit/debit card (all credit/debit cards must have a Mastercard or VISA symbol displayed) and cheque. If I spot a greyhound from the heats that I want to watch in the finals, how do I know which final the greyhound will be competing in? The form guides for the finals will be available at 10am Friday 21 November 2014 at grv.org.au/ready2race. These form guides will also be available at the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association on the day of the finals and auction. You will also be able to view your greyhound in the parade yard in the minutes leading up to its race. What facilities are available at the Ready 2 Race Sales? The Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) is an initiative of Greyhound Racing Victoria dedicated to finding homes for greyhounds that are no longer considered racing prospects, and educating the public about the gentle nature of the breed. All Greyhounds sold through the 2014 Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales will have the entry fee waivered to enter the Greyhound Adoption Program.
