Only you can make a difference to your future, but that doesn’t mean doing it alone. County Durham Housing Group’s Employment and Skills Team provides support to tenants to: • • • • • •

Find a job Access training Develop new skills Improve confidence Gain an apprenticeship Venture into self-employment.

Working together with Dale & Valley Homes, Durham City Homes and East Durham Homes, the team provides tailored employability support to help you reach your goals.

Meet Ian Ian was out of work but showed a real flair for woodwork. With help from the team at County Durham Housing Group, he has become self-employed and has launched ‘Hand Made Rustic Furniture’. Operating from a workshop in his back garden, Ian crafts everything from outdoor furniture to garden planters, wishing wells and household chests. With support from East Durham Business Service, County Durham Housing Group was able to provide funding for Ian’s shed, tools and necessary insurances. Ian said: “My carpentry was always just a hobby, but more and more people were telling me I could make a business out of my work; and with support from County Durham Housing Group it has become a reality.”

Meet Demi and Sophie Two young women heard ‘you’re hired’ thanks to help from the group. Demi (left) and Sophie (right) both secured business administration apprenticeships by working with the Employability and Skills Team, with support from Durham County Council. Both girls are now gaining hands-on experience in an office environment.

Demi said: “I finished my A-levels and felt that experience of the working world would bring me more opportunities than continuing in full-time education.” Sophie agrees: “I was exactly the same as Demi – I was at university and it wasn’t for me. I struggled to find full-time employment, so an apprenticeship was a fantastic solution.” It’s a common conundrum for young people today – go into further education or start to work; but unfortunately the latter is sometimes easier said than done in today’s climate. But by working with the group’s Employment and Skills Team we can give people access to practical experience and transferable skills, which will prove invaluable for any future career path.
