Security. Safeguarding your facilities, personnel and data requires physical security, state-of-theart cybercrime prevention and vigilance against social engineering. As cyberthreats increase in frequency and sophistication, and everything from SCADA to rigs to pumps and valves are digitally connected, your defense needs to move far beyond passwords and firewalls. CDW can help you strengthen existing security with a comprehensive, proactive approach that protects your infrastructure and your data on land and offshore, in every environment. Our strategy includes: • Defense-in-depth solutions to protect your gateway and network against malicious attacks that can corrupt systems and data, as well as safeguard server, client and application security — without limiting productivity. Mitigate and manage risk with tools such as anti-virus, anti-spam and anti-malware protection, content filtering, network access control, intrusion prevention and authentication. • Data loss prevention solutions that secure your data even when it moves outside your network perimeter, complementing measures designed to protect your systems. By combining encryption with tools that classify, monitor, report and restrict data from being printed, emailed or copied, you can minimize the risk of data loss and help ensure compliance with company security policies.

• Client virtualization — also known as a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) — to centralize software in your data center where you can more effectively protect it, making desktops and mobile devices significantly less vulnerable to breach. Total Mobility Management. The wide adoption of mobile devices promotes innovation in field worker operations and has a positive impact on efficiency, safety, worker empowerment and operational excellence. CDW’s Total Mobility Management solution can help you capitalize on this value while also addressing the many challenges raised by mobility in general, and BYOD in particular. We can: • Ensure that you have the mobile device, content and application management you need to protect sensitive data while maximizing security, flexibility and productivity. • Expertly guide you in building custom mobile apps or selecting the best off-the-shelf option for your operations. • Equip your field workers with rugged devices that can safely and reliably withstand harsh field conditions to enable field data capture, real-time operability and geolocation.

Storage. When you can collect data from sources as diverse as tablets and phones to sensors on extraction equipment and ocean buoys — plus massive amounts of seismic and geological data, simulations and models — it exponentially multiplies the volume of the data assets you need to store and access. CDW Energy helps you implement powerful parallel server clusters linked to scalable, multi-tier storage systems and turnkey cloud provisioning for a full array of public, private or hybrid options. Big Data/predictive analytics. The oil and gas industry has the three V’s of Big Data — volume, velocity and variety — in spades, thanks to full-wavefield inversion (FWI) and other new algorithms, 3D and 4D imaging, and wide-azimuth (WAZ) surveys that dramatically increase the amount of data captured and processed. CDW can identify and deploy the tools you need to extract value from these mounds of unstructured data, helping you transform raw data into actionable insights.

Asset management. The ability to efficiently trace, monitor and track pumps, valves, pipes, frac tanks, drill bits and other equipment for logistics and repair is critical to increasing profitability and assuring compliance. CDW can help you integrate robust tracking solutions that automate asset identification, capture and process logistics information, and improve visibility and control of asset status, utilization and profit. Low latency networking. CDW’s oil and gas experts can help you architect the scalable low-latency networks that your high-stakes computing environment demands. To ensure you process and interpret your data with ultra-high efficiency, we support your ability to optimize performance speed with the right network management tools and switches. Power and cooling. The growth in computing power and storage capacity has fueled similar increases in power and cooling needs. CDW can design and implement energy-efficient server and storage systems and configurations to help reduce cooling and power consumption and contain costs.

Virtualization. CDW’s solution architects can tailor server, storage and client virtualization solutions to support your security goals, better leverage existing investments and reduce operating costs. Business continuity/disaster recovery. Maintaining continuous uptime is a non-negotiable priority. CDW can help you create a solid business continuity strategy with the right technology to protect against power outages, rugged environments and other potential disruptions to your operations.

TOP TIPS

GROWING SMART GRID DEMAND AND SCALABILITY

for safeguarding your data, communication and grid infrastructure

1. Be wise about mobility. Mobility brings flexibility and efficiency — and increased vulnerability. Take advantage of VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure), MDM (mobile device management), geolocation and other controls to minimize the risks associated with smartphones and tablets — and especially BYOD. 2. Beware of your partners and suppliers. Your security is only as effective as that of your weakest partner and supplier. Require third parties to comply with privacy and security practices and policies, just as you require employees to. 3. Keep pace with changing threats. As threats increase in sophistication, your defenses must also. Firewalls, web content filters, anti-malware and anti-virus software, and encryption remain critical but they’re no longer sufficient. Data loss prevention and defense-in-depth tools should also be integrated to protect your most valuable data and infrastructure assets.

4. Stay abreast of changing technologies. Before you implement cloud computing, mobility or other technologies, integrate them into your security strategy. 5. Engage the C-suite. Make sure your CEO supports your security strategy with the human and financial resources you need, and helps you build a culture of security from the top down. Hiring a CISO can ensure that security issues remain front and center and are addressed proactively. 6. Assess your success. Regularly review and measure the effectiveness of your security strategies. Track security events closely, analyze how quickly they were managed and strengthen prevention to minimize future risk. 7. Constantly remain vigilant. Act as if an intruder is currently in your network, even though you don’t know about it — chances are good that’s actually true.

Your dedicated CDW account team can help assess your current and future needs and leverage new and existing technologies to better manage your mobile workforce, address growing demand for smart grid technologies, scale based on demand, support regulatory compliance, protect valuable data and improve cost efficiencies.
