2016 This week’s main feature focuses on Tuesday’s Enrichment Day. Turn over to see what we all got up to!

CEDAR MOUNT ACADEMY, GORTON EDUCATION VILLAGE, 50 WEMBLEY ROAD, GORTON, MANCHESTER M18 7DT

Points of Interest Enrichment Day Award Winning Visitors Cedar Mount was pleased to welcome Children’s Laureate and award-winning author and illustrator Chris Riddell to the Academy as part of our enrichment day on Tuesday 15th November. Chris has written the Goth Girl series and the Ghost of a Mouse books. As children entered the theatre Chris was busily drawing a cartoon which was displayed on the projector using a visualizer. Pupils were in fits of laughter as he regaled stories of his childhood whilst animating his tales with cartoons of the people who inspired him to become a writer and illustrator. He explained that his children had introduced him to social networking and he regularly tweets his work and collaborations with other authors on Twitter, and uses Instagram and Tumblr to showcase his drawings. He is now addicted to blue thumbs up! Following the talk, there was book signing where Chris chatted to Y6 children from Plymouth Grove, Stanley Grove, Rushbrook Academy along with Y7 students from Cedar Mount followed by a tour of our library with Miss Molloy. Chris explained he LOVES libraries and encourages as many children as possible to pick up a book and get reading. Many thanks to Chris for his entertaining talk and Kay from Manchester Metropolitan who accompanied him on his trip. As always a HUGE thanks to Emma and Judy from Stanley Grove who entertained the children making ‘special edition’ Chris Riddell lanterns for the parade in December. There’s more information to follow on the event so keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook pages as we’ll be releasing more information about the ‘Let in the Stars’ project in conjunction with The Book Trust nearer the time.

As well as the external visitor’s, all other year groups got involved in different activities for enrichment day too…

GCSE Certificates Presentation Evening On Thursday 17th November, Cedar Mount Academy was delighted to welcome back the Year 11 2016 leavers to celebrate their successes in the summer GCSE exams. Mr Burkitt led the proceedings as the ex-students and their family and friends joined many members of staff, there to acknowledge the achievements of a wonderful group of young people. As each student accepted their certificates, there was loud applause in deserved recognition of all their hard work and dedication. It was great to hear some of the stories about what they were doing now; the colleges they were attending, the courses they were taking and the futures they had planned. Judging from the laughter, the smiles and the happy atmosphere, it seemed as though everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Many thanks to the catering staff for their lovely food, to the site staff for creating a beautiful venue, to the Year 10 students who helped to host the event and to all the staff who either joined us on the night or played a part in its running smoothly – especially to Mr Burkitt for his excellent organising of what was a fantastic evening. Miss Wyatt
