Points of Interest Thought of the Week Here are this week’s ‘Thoughts of the Days’. Our favourite thought for this week is; “Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.”- Willie Nelson. Willie Hugh born April 29, 1933 is an American musician, singer, songwriter, author, poet, actor, and activist. The critical success of the album Shotgun Willie (1973), combined with the critical and commercial success of Red Headed Stranger (1975) and Stardust (1978), made Nelson one of the most recognized artists in country music. He was one of the main figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960s as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound.

Reading News CMA students join in with National Literacy Trust scheme to encourage reading for enjoyment.

Using the 1916 Battle of the Somme centenary and the football fever around Euro 2016 children’s author Tom Palmer is writing a free live sixteen chapter story for students aged between 7 -13. It is called Over the Line 2016 and it is set during the Euro 2016 football tournament and the main characters are school pupils on a battlefield tour and First World War soldiers. The story will follow Khalid and Grace, two children who are studying the Battle of the Somme in advance of a Battlefield Tour to the area with their school in the last week of June. The daily chapters will respond to the events of the previous day at Euro 2016, such as the main stories that the broadcast and print media are covering from the tournament, controversies on and off the pitch, key games and the results for England, Northern Ireland and Wales. A group of KS3 students have listened to the first chapter being read out aloud and are now reading the following chapters independently in the library on Student Work/Sharing/Reading/Over the Line 2016.

This is the cigarette card mentioned in chapter 13. The photos are of the Footballer’s Batallion Memorial, the cemetery near Couin and Delville wood today. Video clips and more information can be found on http://tompalmer.co.uk/first-world-warliteracy-resources/

If you want to read Over the Line 2016 with your son/daughter it can be found at http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/ and then link Euro 2016 and Battle of Somme link. short story Call of Duty about a modern footballer going to war can be found on http://tompalmer.co.uk/first-world-war-literacy-resources/

Jo Cox Tribute Miss Morris put together this PowerPoint last week after the tragic death of MP Jo Cox. On behalf of everyone at Gorton Education Village we want to send our love to her family and friends at this difficult time. She was an inspiration to many and we would like to share our moment of reflection with others at this time.

Message from BFET; More than 150 students turned Manchester’s Event City Indoor Athletics Arena into their very own Olympics event for a day on 22nd June. Students represented their own schools from across the Bright Futures Educational Trust (BFET) joined forces to compete in the Trust’s very first Sports Day. The event, which was organised by BFET and Manchester’s four times Olympian Diane Modahl in partnership with the Diane Modahl Foundation and Manchester Giants, was a huge success with students showing their competitive flare in a range of sporting track events including sprint, javelin, vertical/standing jump, shot and relay.

At the end of the day students listened to an outstanding performance by GEV’s Rawchestra, a group of students from Melland High School and Cedar Mount Academy, before being presented with medals and trophies. Special congratulations to Altrincham Grammar School for Girls who scooped the title of ‘Overall Winning School’. Lisa Fathers, Head of Teaching School and BFET Co-Principal, commented: “All students should be really proud of their performances; they all tried so hard and really excelled in their individual events.” “The day was a huge success and we hope that this is the first of many BFET Sports Days.” For information about the day and to read the full article please visit the link below or check out the DM’s Twitter page @DMSF_UK http://bfet.co.uk/news/energetic-students-take-part-first-bright-futures-educational-trust-sports-day/
