Points of Interest Head of Sport visits Cedar Mount On Monday 10th October Nick Pontefract, Head of Sport visited Cedar Mount to meet with staff and pupils involved in the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation. Nick watched on as Bex put the kids through a gruelling session and participated in star jumps and burpees! He was interested in the impact of the programme at ‘grass roots’ level and pledged to fund similar initiatives to aid the curriculum in schools, Nicks impact on the kids was very apparent, they were really inspired by his words of encouragement and he ended his visit surrounded by the pupils during Q & A session and photographs At the end of his visit he tweeted ‘Thanks @DMSF_UK & @CedarMountHigh. Love commitment to sport across curriculum. And thanks @BexGB5 for getting me doing burpees in my suit!’ Check out our twitter pages for more pictures from the afternoon.

Year 11 Careers Trip Message from ABU; 11 students were invited to attend The Manchester College Skills Show @ Manchester Central on Friday 7th October. This formed part of the PROJECT 11 strategy to provide opportunities for our students to explore possible further education pathways with college providers. The event was filled with opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience of their chosen programme of study or industry through a range of interactive activities including catering, sport, hair dressing and performing arts. Pupils were able gather information and ask questions about the vocational study programmes, A-Levels, apprenticeships and routes into higher education. The students took full advantage of all that was offered to them. They each received goody bags from the college which contained the important prospectus and application form.

The Olympic Parade! Message from PME; 52 representative students and staff from Stanley Grove, Rushbrook, Cedar Mount and Melland High will be leading the Olympic Parade through Manchester on Monday. The parade starts at 4.15 from Liverpool Street at the side of the Museum of Science and Industry and will end up in Albert Square around 5.15. Every member of team GB are expected to be there and 200,000 people are expected to come to watch! The parade will also be televised on BBC 1 from 4.15 so keep an eye out for some familiar faces. We will share photos via twitter/website and next week's newsletter. Thanks in advance For more info please visit http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/ whats-on/whats-on-news/olympic-parademanchester-route-time-11960824

Badminton Message from AGI; On Monday 10th October the key Stage 3 and 4 girls’ badminton teams played in the central and east Manchester team badminton competition. The Key Stage 4 team played 10 games - winning 9 of them. They have qualified for the Manchester finals in the near future. We do not know the result yet for the Key Stage 3 team - but they performed very well so we are hoping that they also qualified. Well done girls!

Winter Gardens Art Trip Message from TCH; Yesterday we attended a conference by Challenge Partners with two students who represented their art diorama project called Illuminate. The project was based around celebrating culture and diversity around the academy community. We started the day at Marton Primary School in Blackpool where we all made lanterns for the student parade at Winter Gardens later on that day. Students were able to discuss the outcomes of their art work with delegates in an exhibition later on that day. For all their efforts and hard work around the project, students were treated to a viewing of the illumination exhibit called Illuminasia at the end of the day.

Autumn Safe Assembly Fire fighters from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue conducted a week of visits to teach pupils how to keep safe over Bonfire Night. This was organised as part of Operation Treacle, part of Greater Manchester’s Safe4Autumn campaign which aims to make safety information easily available to the public and encourage respect towards others during the autumn months. The fire fighters talked to pupils about firework and bonfire safety, encouraging them to attend large organised displays or bonfires rather than host their own. They explained that most injuries happen to young teenagers and showed a film on some of the horrific injuries sustained by not following the basic safety rules. Pupils learned a great deal over the course of the talk, and were able to ask questions about safety issues at the end.

Mancunian Way Update

Shakespeare Festival Rehearsals Cast rehearsals going well this week for ‘The Tempest’. Don’t forget, tickets are available in school with Miss Losztyn in Drama!

Miss Austin’s ‘Brag it Board’ Message from KAU; I've set up a 'brag it board' in my classroom where I display pieces of student work that has impressed me, shown they have worked hard within their lesson and they've followed the schools presentation policy. I would like to say a big thank you and congratulations to;

Year 7 – Antonica, Year 8 - Cade and Demi-Lee, Year 9 Gabriella, Remeece and Ali-Hassan. Well done for all your hard work!

Year 10 Football Message from MRO; The year 10 football team continued their unbeaten run on Monday night with a 4-4 draw against Burnage. Callum scored a stunning 30 yard goal to give us the lead late on but we gave away a penalty in the dying minutes to leave it 4-4. If you see any of the students around the academy please congratulate them!

Ex-student Success! Message from DRA; For those who remember him, I have just had a visit form an ex-student Ali Hassan Chaudhry who left us in 2013. He and his twin are now at Manchester University. He is studying Aero Nautical Engineering and his brother Ali Haider is studying Computer Science. We are so proud of them! Congratulations!
