Points of Interest Message from the Executive Principal It has been great to see so many parents at our recent progress evenings for Years 8 and 9 - thank you for your support and the very positive feedback that staff received. Well done to all of the Year 11 students who have been working hard through Period 6 and now on Saturdays and to the staff who are working so hard to support them. We were delighted to hear recently that one of our former students had gained a place at Cambridge University, which goes to show that, if they work hard, with our support Cedar Mount students can achieve anything. There are lots of exciting events coming up so keep an eye on the website/twitter/newsletters. Mr P. Mellen

Man U Trip Message from LMO; I’m taking 20 students to watch Manchester United in the next round of the Europa League. Paul Pogba’s brother will be playing for the opposition. Trip costs £16 (which includes cost of ticket + transport to and from the game). See Miss Morris for more details.

IT News CISCO Little Big Awards Ms Jones and 3 year 10’s make the regional finals Making it to the regional finals was a fantastic achievement! So give a huge well done to Jasmine, Alex and Rowan for showcasing their amazing idea at the CISCO Little Big Awards on Monday 6th February. The judges were extremely impressed with the medical suitcase, inspired by Jasmine’s personal experience. The suitcase had been designed to help people remember to take their medication especially the elderly and people with dementia. We didn’t make it to the National Finals this time but we had a great day picked up lots of ideas for next time and received some GREAT feedback. Special thanks to Mr Kedian who didn’t hesitate to help out and worked tirelessly with the three students to create a very professional prototype…

Reading Enrichment January 2017

‘My name is Katie Thistleton and you might know me from CBBC or Radio 1. You might also know that I love books, and now I’m writing my own, but I need your help, and I want to help you out too. We all feel a bit rubbish sometimes, or have worries we want to ask people about but don’t feel we can. That’s where my new book, Dear Katie, is going to come in handy as it will feature letters from 10-16 year-olds just like you, asking me for their advice. Write your question or problem letter and I’ll try to answer it when I visit your school in January! No subject is off limits – we want to make you feel better because everyone deserves to feel happy most of the time! Your question might be included in the book too but don’t worry, we will change all details when we publish the letters, so even your bezzies won’t be able to figure out it’s you’.

Katie is a Reading Ambassador for

at the launch of Read Manchester, Katie said:

‘I truly believe that reading stands you in great stead for your future, improving your vocabulary and knowledge without you even realising it, and relaxing the mind!’ ‘Reading makes for a happy person, and if you're not a fan of it, I think you simply haven't found the right book yet! It might not be the one you're reading in school, or the one your friends like, but there is a book out there which will make you not want to do anything else but read!’

Visit to CMA

Katie is researching a book that is due for publication in September 2017, the book, to be called ‘Dear Katie’ is going to be an ‘agony-aunt’ style book, with letters addressing real problems that have been raised by pupils. Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 had the opportunity to meet Katie when she visited CMA. The students posted ‘problems’ in an Ask Katie box prior to her visit and she took the box away after the event and she may in fact use some of them in her book!

Our CMA students participated well and gave knowledgeable and mature answers during Katie’s presentation - an open discussion on the problems faced by teenagers today. They were excellent ambassadors for CMA. Katie and the 2 visitors, who accompanied her, were all very impressed. Well done to our CMA students!!

What a lovely welcome from CMA – box filled with Dear Katie letters! Thank you! Thank you for being so welcoming, your pupils were so emotionally intelligent! Impressed! If you are aged 10-16 and have an issue or problem you’d like advice on, send a letter to Katie. For a chance to have your question included in her new book: - Pick up a Dear Katie leaflet from CMA library and send a letter to

Thursday 26th January Abraham Moss Library

A group of 30 Y7 and Y8 CMA students had the opportunity to meet the author Katy Birchall. Katy visited Abraham Moss library theatre as part of the tour to celebrate the publication of her new book ‘Don’t Tell the Bridesmaid’. Katy started writing The It Girl 3 years ago – the first book was published in May 2015.

Reading Enrichment

During the visit Katy shared her experiences of being a writer of both books and magazines to an audience of 260 students. Katy presented an activity which involved student participation to look at where stories come from and she also provided the students with top tips for writing stories. She also introduced the students to her pre-teen series, The It Girl, with a hilarious reading from the book. Katy ended the morning with a Q and A session followed by a book signing session.

Katy signed copies of her It Girl series for the CMA students who purchased a book as well as the CMA library copies shown. There are 3 sets of The It Girl series in CMA library – Make sure you reserve a copy to borrow!
