Points of Interest Principal’s Message Welcome back and Happy New Year to all students, parents and staff. We hope that you had a restful and enjoyable Christmas break. It was great to end the term with a whole school assembly, showcasing student talents and rewarding attendance. There is a lot to look forward to in the Spring Term with trips, sports events, and residential visits and much more as well as the usual excellent teaching and learning that goes on every day. We have moved to our new single lunch hour with a range of activities and clubs for all students and this has gone very well so far. We are delighted to be working with City Year, a charitable organisation who have placed a team of 7 18-25 years old with us for the rest of the academic year. They will mentor students, running clubs and supporting behaviour across an academy day. I look forward to seeing you at a school event soon.

Attendance Award and Whole School Assembly Huge congratulations to Johnzaib

24 Hour Jamathon Follow Up Message from ZPA;

Thanks to everyone’s support on the CMA 24 Hour Jamathon last term, we had our delivery of instruments and music resources this week. Photos below show what our crowdfunding money has gone towards. On behalf of all the students that use this department on a regular basis and everyone who donated money to support us, thank you. You really have made an impact here at CMA.

Maths News Message from SME; Year 7 pupils no longer have an excuse for arriving late to school in the mornings after they spent their maths lessons in the last week of term making clocks to take home for Christmas. Before any designing and building of the clock could start, the pupils had to create their own calculations for each of the numbers on the clock face and it was a pleasure to see the pupils trying to make their sums as challenging as possible. Mr Mellen was invited to choose the best clock from each class and congratulations go to Mario, Aneesa, Ehtasham and Maria for making the final five. However, the overall winner was Antonica for her complex calculations alongside a brilliant design.

Well done!

An Inspector Calls Message from CWY; A dark 7.30am on Wednesday 21st December saw a gaggle of excited travellers gathering in the bistro – and that was just the staff! Miss Reid, Miss Heagney, Miss Scholes, Miss Losztyn, Mr Dillon, Miss Crockford and Miss Wyatt were soon joined by some 70 or so equally eager students and everyone was looking forward to the journey down to London to attend a performance of ‘An Inspector Calls’ at the Playhouse Theatre. After a boisterous entry on to the coach followed by several counting of heads, the coach set off to much cheering around 8:15 for the long drive. Only a few shouts of ‘Are we there yet?’ could be heard as we made our final approach to the outskirts of London and everyone peered through the windows to catch their first glimpse of a familiar London landmark. Tracking right through the middle of Trafalgar Square, giving us a fantastic view of Nelson’s Column and his guarding lions, the coach finally pulled up at the entrance to the theatre just after 1:30. Tickets presented, seats were found and we all waited for curtain up – and wasn’t it worth waiting for! A brilliant performance from a superb cast brought the play to life and the students were treated to a stunning adaptation of the play they had studied so intensely in their lessons. Students enthusiastically expressed how much they had enjoyed it and that it had helped them understand it more clearly. Despite many requests to do some ‘touristy things’ and ‘Christmas sightseeing and shopping’ after the performance, we unfortunately had to get back on board the coach for the drive back to school. As we journeyed through the dark, the singing and loud chatting gradually lessened as students gave in to their tiredness and some fell asleep. Arriving at the gates just after 11pm, it had been a long day but definitely one to remember.

A good day for everyone.

City Pathways challenge4challenge Trip Message from Mr Milligan; On Thursday 22nd December students in involved in the city pathways program were invited on a trip to an indoor climbing centre. Students were split into teams to complete a series of tasks in which they had to stay off the floor. All students enjoyed this even though some were a little unsure about being at height, climbing and balancing above the ground. Well done to all involved;

City Year UK Message from Miss Walsh; I’m Miss Walsh, the Impact Officer for City Year UK who are now working here at Cedar Mount Academy. I line manage Team Unity, my lovely team of 6 volunteers. I will be working closely with CMA staff to ensure we provide the best possible service. City Year is a youth social action charity which challenges young people to tackle educational inequality, through a year of full time voluntary service. My lovely team of 6 are volunteering full time until July. Myself and the team will be working on whole school initiatives, including supporting with Breakfast time, Lunch duties, afterschool clubs and anything else that’s going on. In addition to this, the volunteers work closely with around 60 focus list students who have been identified by staff as requiring additional support with attendance, behaviour, curriculum; or any combination of the three. We are here to serve. Serve the students and the whole community here at the academy. We will be supporting and underpinning all behaviour strategies that are in place. We are grateful to have been welcomed so quickly into the academy and just want to get stuck in! We can’t be missed in our bright red jackets – so please do say hello. We look forward to getting involved in all aspects of academy life in the coming months.

This week’s City Year Profile is… Name: Miss Walsh Age: 24 How long have you worked for City Year? Since December 2016 What is the best thing about working for City Year? The culture – everyone is genuinely very happy and caring. If you could be a character in a Disney film who would you be and why? I would be Mulan because she is independent and determined. What’s your favourite subject? Law – I studied it at University and taught it at A Level. What are you looking forward to implementing at CMA? I am particularly looking forward to implementing our culture, especially the idea of the ‘growth mindset’. Ability is not fixed; everyone can be brilliant it just takes an open mind, self-belief and effort.
