Once again, Mr. Skibbe is leading students in a Last‐Day Variety Show.  This show   will be an assembly for our students and for the Parents of the show’s  performers.  It will start at 9:30 a.m. in the Gym on our final half‐day of school,   Thursday, May 25.  Please note that due to the capacity of the Gym, we are asking others NOT to aƩend this assembly. Character Corner: Growth Mindset At Craig, we believe that all students can achieve at high levels. In order to reach high levels, students and staff  must have a growth mindset. A student with a growth mindset perseveres even when things are difficult.  Students also demonstrate resiliency and bounce back from failures with a renewed sense of purpose.

We strive to help our students understand that failure is not fatal and that mistakes are part of the learning  process. As we prepare for state tes ng, we con nue to talk with our students about the importance of trying  their best and never giving up. We hope to ins ll in them the belief that we love them no ma er what! Please  talk with your child at home about how they demonstrate a growth mindset at school and extracurricular  ac vi es.

*See a ached document for the difference between fixed & growth mindset words and phrases to use with your  child to foster a growth mindset.  *See a ached document for the difference between success & frustra on and phrases to use with your child.  ‐ Craig Character Council

OWL Family April Lesson: Families will be celebra

ng their differences by crea ng individual  flags. The goal is to show that there are similari es as well as differences among our community.

Set aside five to ten minutes daily to listen to your child read the books he/she brings home from school. Here are some “handy tips” to reinforce the techniques being used during school instruction:

1.

As children learn to read, one-to-one matching is very important. Encourage your child to read every word he/she sees, not skipping any or adding extra words.

2. Help your child use strategies which assist him/her in becoming an independent reader such as:  Encouraging your child to check pictures and to think about what makes sense or what sounds right.  Encouraging your child to look at the letters and think about the sounds in relationship to what makes sense and sounds right, rather than just saying “sound it out.”  Encouraging your child to reread if what has been read does not make sense. Allow wait time to work it out. Start by asking:  Does it make sense?  Does it sound right?  Does it look right?

3.

Always praise for good reading work! Here are some ways to give praise: * Good Try! * I like how you worked it out by yourself! * You worked out the tricky part by going back and rereading!

Because of your wonderful support, we are able to contribute to various enrichment opportunities for the students and teachers, as well as assist with many programs and daily classroom experiences. In the past, funds the PTO has raised have supported purchasing many of the essentials used everyday at school including the Craig School marquee sign in front of school, all outdoor benches, tables and trash receptacles, new sound systems for the music department and another for performances in the gym, Smart Boards, Moonlight the Owl and his storage bag, school library shelves and storage and the playground equipment, just to name a few. If we are able to get enough donations, this direct appeal of the “Yellow Envelope Campaign” allows the PTO to forego multiple fund raising projects where students are asked to sell items throughout the school year. Instead, we seek one‐time donations. Unlike those other projects, every dollar contributed to the “Yellow Envelope Campaign” goes directly to support Craig Elementary School. We welcome contributions from friends, grandparents, and employers! How much should we give? In the past, most donations have been around $25 to $50 per student, but PTO has also received as little as $5 and as much as $500. You decide. It all adds up. If your employer matches donations, please include a completed matching request form. We will fill in the organizational information and request the matching funds from your employer. Tax‐deductible contributions can be made to “Craig PTO” and sent, along with the information below, in the attached envelope. Drop envelope in the bright green PTO box located in the school lobby anytime, or mail to: Craig Elementary School, Attn: PTO, 1492 Craig Road, St. Louis, MO 63146 or please go to: https://www.gofundme.com/craigpto2016 or you can mail a check to: For more information, contact our Fundraising Officer, Kellie Viau at: [email protected]

Thank you for your support!
