#WGSTAnnualConference   Sponsors: Women and Gender Studies

Department of Philosophy

Welcome to the Annual Gender Research Conference! Women and Gender Studies officially began at George Mason University 25 years ago. We have spent the year celebrating our anniversary with a variety of events that we scheduled, as often as possible, on the 25th of each month. Thus, the choice to hold the conference on Friday, April 24th was deliberate one, meant as an opportunity to celebrate the research, teaching and service that has always been central to our mission. We are thrilled to have one our founding mothers, Professor Debra Bergoffen with us today sharing her work on Comfort Station Women (Session L). The Gender Research Conference was originally conceived as a way to highlight gender research on the Mason campus and bring attention to the great work that so many of us were doing. In 2014 we re-envisioned the conference beyond the Mason community and we were pleased that presenters and attendees came from Mason as well as the DMV region and beyond. This year the conference has doubled in size and continues to attract presenters and attendees from Mason, from other universities in the region, and community members as well. This year’s theme, “The Politics of Gender and Justice: The Intersection of Identity and Discipline” challenges us to think of intersectionality in broad and complex ways. We are excited about the broad range of presentations that will take place across the day. Not only are the topics interdisciplinary and intersectional, but the presentations themselves are diverse as well. We have roundtables, workshops, traditional paper presentations, and artistic installations and performances. Our keynote event is a screening of the film Out in the Night followed by a talk by the film’s director Giovanna Chesler (Associate Professor of Communication and Director of the Film and Video Studies Program at George Mason University). The choice of the keynote is representative of our vision for the conference: diversity in content and form, intersectionality in identity and discipline. We invite you to spend the day sampling from the richness of the conference. We hope that you enjoy the variety of presentations and that you meet new people with whom you can continue the conversation we hope the conference started. Thank you for joining us and we look forward to seeing you again next year! Best wishes,

Angie Hattery Professor and Director Women and Gender Studies George Mason University *Note: We are grateful for the generosity of one of our “friends” for making the conference, including breakfast, lunch, and snacks FREE for all.
