A LOOK INSIDE

June 2018

Celebration Rotarians volunteer in Guatemala In February 2018, four members of the Rotary Club of Celebration (Fred Fox, Victoria Fox, Gail Silva, and Avery Berghuis) traveled to a remote jungle village in the northeast corner of Guatemala called Cuatro Cayos on a 10-day humanitarian trip.

Teacher Appreciation See Page 21

Three other Rotary Clubs including the Rotary Club of Westbrook, the Los Amates Club from Guatemala and a Rotary Club from Oregon joined them. Adding to the mix and adventure were a number of members from Stroudwater Christian Church of Westbrook, Maine. Together they mixed and poured cement floors, built cooking stoves, installed Zika nets, provided

basic dentistry service, taught at the schools and, most importantly, experienced the warmth and friendliness of the people in the village. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Celebration, each member took full suitcases of clothes, shoes and glasses to give the nearly 400 people in the village. The clothes were gone in 10 minutes to the much deserving villagers. Continued on page 5

Celebrating Independence Day With meteorological summer kicking off on June 1 (the summer solstice is June 21), the season of heat, humidity and afternoon thunderstorms is upon us. As we turn to a new page on the calendar, it’s never too early to start thinking about Independence Day and all the ways you can enjoy America’s 242nd birthday.

Bike to School day See Page 37

The perfect way to kick off your day is by attending, or better yet, participating in Celebration’s Independence Day parade. The annual march sponsored by the Celebration Residential Owners Association (CROA), kicks off at 9 a.m. from 851 Celebration Avenue and traverses up Celebration Avenue to Market Street, before ending at Lakeside Park. Residents, community groups and our local businesses are all invited to participate. The enthusiastic spectators that line the route help enhance the event in the Rockwellesque setting.

Following the morning festivities, residents are encouraged to enjoy the (hopefully) great weather and spend some time cooling off at one of the community pools, or perhaps gather with their neighbors in one of our many parks for a BBQ, picnic or informal get-together. Other options for a fun and frolicking afternoon could be a visit to a local waterpark, spending some time on a lake or even a trip to the beach. Of course no Independence Day would be complete unless punctuated by fireworks. While there are no scheduled fireworks or activities in Celebration during the evening, there are plenty of local options if you want to catch the painting of the night sky. Theme Parks are always a popular holiday choice, both during the day and the evening. Continued on page 7

Updates from your CROA Board This third brief update from your Board of Directors of the Celebration Residential Owners Association (CROA) continues to inform residents and visitors of the many initiatives we are undertaking. Within the five pillars of Celebration (Community, Education, Place, Technology and Health), the CROA Board is conducting its activities in an overall framework of “Engaged Planning.” We are taking the time to review facilities, activities, and services always with the desire of continual improvement. We have formally adopted six strategic goals, highlighted in last month’s column and detailed on the Celebration website. Several new highlights are worth noting. First, the Board has decided to have a building constructed at the athletic and recreation fields; as planned, it features restrooms, concession space, storage and meeting space. This major new amenity – fields and building - has a planned opening in early 2019. Second, all Board meetings and workshops are now being live streamed; in addition, they continue to be available for review later on the website. Third, we now have a new volunteer committee for the Dog Park, reviewing this amenity, which recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Fourth, we have had meetings with Mattamy Homes, the developer for the planned Island Village area just past the high school; you can see our hour-long discussion and recommendations in the May 7 workshop recording. Fifth, we have just completed the fifth resident survey, focusing on our community standards and covenants process; we will report the results at the June Board meeting. Finally, we approved the purchase of new playground equipment for East Village and North Village, with installation to come in the next few months. In addition, notably, several important things are coming. With the development of Island Village, regular community updates are planned, including Town Hall meetings and CROA Board workshops with representatives from Mattamy Homes. Planned for July is a groundbreaking ceremony for the athletic and recreation fields. Also during the summer will be the initial planning for the 2018 budget; since the Board must plan its expenditures significantly ahead of time, this is the opportunity to help review and guide the community’s services and resources. Finally, we are in the process of planning a major makeover of our Celebration website; with evolving technology and resident feedback (from our recent resident surveys), we want to illustrate our Technology pillar. Watch the Celebration News, Friday Flash and website for specific dates and details on each of these items and more. Welcome to June and a spectacular summer in Celebration. We look forward to your continued engagement – YOU are what makes Celebration so special.

Celebration Spotlight highlights a different resident every month, and provides a glimpse into the people who make this community so special.

If you have a suggestion of a resident for an upcoming Celebration Spotlight, please email us at [email protected].

This month’s Celebration Spotlight is a resident who not only enjoys the community, but also does his best to ensure its residents are in shape for whatever may come their way. Meet Ryan Clarke, Celebration resident and owner of RC FIT 7 Personal Training.

Favorite Song: Tomorrow by the Winans

Name: Ryan Clarke

You have one opportunity to explain to a complete stranger why Celebration is special, what would you say: The town of Celebration is like nowhere I’ve ever been. The sense of community, the uniqueness of the homes, and the overwhelming sense of peace you feel while on an early morning or evening stroll on one of the many trails is something you won’t find in many places.

Lived in Celebration since: June of 2015 The one thing in Celebration that I never get tired of: The beautiful scenery A key event in my life: Moving to America

Star who would play me in a movie version of my life: Djimon Hounsou One thing people don’t know about me: I was born in Jamaica and lived there for 8 years Five people, living or dead, I’d invite to a dinner party: Jesus Christ, my wife Dominique, Ulisses Jr., Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bob Marley

Accomplishment I am most proud of to this point in my life: Marrying my best friend

The best way to describe Celebration is it’s magical!

One thing I want to be sure to do while I am still able: Ride a motorcycle Hobbies: Working out and occasionally sketching anime characters Book I would recommend: Fitonics for Life by Marilyn Diamond

Rotarians volunteer in Guatemala Continued from page 1

Most of the 42 families in the village live in a 10 x 8 square house built with wood plank walls with large gaps, tin or thatched roofs, and dirt floors. Before the visit, they cooked with twigs on the floor or on top of a wood table with old tin foil or a few bricks laying on top of the table. Some had small single beds with wires strung to support an old beat-up mattress, but most sleep in hammocks. The biggest shock to the volunteers was the lack of clean water available. The women hand carry their buckets to the river or lake, fill them and carry the buckets back on their heads. There is no electricity in the village, however, a few have a solar panel that generates a small light when the sun is out. The small church provides a generator for church service or town gatherings. Each volunteer was touched by the kindness and happiness of the villagers despite their harsh living environments. Hopefully the Rotary Club of Celebration, along with the partnering volunteers, were able to bring a little comfort and care to this remote village.

Rotary Club of Celebration meets every Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. at the Florida Hospital, Mangrove Room. Come find out how you can also make a difference in your community and beyond. For more info, see celebrationrotary.org.

Osceola County Sheriff ’s Office

Summertime crime prevention By Deputy Jerry Weiland, Osceola County Sheriff Office Summer vacation for many began on May 25 when school let out for the year. Summer is a unique time of year that tends to lead to an increase in many crimes, often committed by young men or teens with idle minds and hands who are in search of an easy opportunity.

Write down the make, model and serial numbers. Serial numbers on bike are usually found underneath the bike where the pedals enter the frame.

There are easy and, often inexpensive ways, to help prevent you from being a victim of a property crime, such as a burglary or theft.

ALL cars should always be left locked with the windows rolled up and without any valuable items in sight, even if leaving for a short time. Set the alarm, if you have one. If nothing is visible and the vehicle is locked, a criminal is less likely to target you. Trust me. Bad guys know what to look for in your cars and know where you usually hide things. Homes should always be locked with the alarms set, even if only going out for a short errand. A loud alarm siren installed facing outdoors can help alert the neighborhood and will draw attention to the area. Most criminals won’t stick around long with a siren blaring. Garage doors, unless you are working in sight of them, should be closed. Many garage doors are left open daily and invite inquisitiveness. I regularly observe garages left open and bet the “bad guys” also take note of them being open too.

Statistically, most property crimes (burglaries and thefts) occur due to an opportunity presenting itself. This especially includes Celebration. Did you know that many past vehicle burglaries reported in Celebration occurred because the doors were left unlocked? Others have happened because purses or other items of value were left in plain view which resulted in car windows being broken. The criminal desire and ability to commit crimes can’t be changed, but you certainly can remove many of their opportunities to do so. Please lock your cars and do not leave things in view. Purses, computers, loose change, charging cords, sunglasses, tools or any electronic items are tempting items for criminals. Some homes are empty as the owners travel north until colder weather returns. Other homes are empty due to being away on vacation. Vehicles are often left with windows down and doors unlocked as people go to outdoor events. Bikes and other property are also left lying about. Unfortunately, even in Celebration, an open car window, unlocked door, things left lying around in yards or on patios and porches, are often taken by thieves who spot the easy opportunity. When investigating burglaries and thefts, deputies and detectives have watched video surveillance and found the crimes were completed in literally only seconds. “I only went inside for a minute” or “But this is Celebration” is a common phrase we also hear when investigating crimes. Remember to learn who your neighbors are and what is normal for your street. If you see someone or something suspicious or unfamiliar, immediately call our office at either 407-348-2222 for non-emergencies or 911. Deputies will check on the matter and ascertain what is occurring. If it proves to be unfounded, that’s a good thing. We would rather check out an occurrence that turns out to be nothing, than launch an investigation into a crime such as a burglary. That one immediate call to law enforcement could stop a single or series of criminal acts, prevent someone from getting hurt, or even save a life. Please call us first, then post on social media if you desire.

Additional Crime Prevention Tips What can you do to lessen the chances of being a victim of a property crime? In a short and easy answer, lock your stuff up and be aware of your surroundings. Please call the Sheriff ’s Office and let the deputy decide if suspicious activity is happening or if the persons are breaking a law. Do not leave property lying around. If something is left unattended and you’re not physically touching it, it is easily taken. A bicycle or other property, if they really need to be left outside, should be locked through the frame and wheels with a steel cable or u-shaped lock made of metal. The safest place would be inside a closed and secured garage. Photograph your bikes, skateboards, garden gnomes or other items.

Don’t “provide” a hiding spot for bad guys. Keep trees and shrubs trimmed to a proper height to keep visibility clear around your home. Consider planting thorny shrubs, from the approved plant list, to discourage someone from using them to hide in. Install motion lights or timer activated lights to also discourage hiding. With LED bulbs, each light may only cost a few dollars a year to run. Be alert to your surroundings. It’s a good idea to learn which vehicles or persons belong in your neighborhood. (Again, know your First Five) You can contact the Sheriff ’s Office non-emergency number at 407-348-2222 to report any suspicious activity, people or vehicles. Please dial 911 to report any in-progress crimes or emergencies. If going away for any length of time. Do not announce it on social media before or during your absence. Have a trusted neighbor check your home and pick up any deliveries or newspapers. Stop mail and paper deliveries. The old saying “An idle mind is the devils workshop,” is really somewhat true for all ages. However, much criminal mischief, thefts and other antics in Celebration are pre-teen and teen related. Parents should know where their kids are and who many of their friends are. Parents should also have other parents’ phone numbers. Tracking devices to keep tabs on your teens driving habits can also be used. Phones and computer use should also be tracked and monitored. These are minors we are talking about and you are the parent. Remember the permanent record generated by law enforcement due to your teens antics will harm chances of good jobs and colleges. These are very basic crime prevention techniques, but can be cost effective and easy to implement. As I have stated before, crime prevention is everybody’s job. The first line of defense in crime prevention is YOU! Help us at the Sheriff ’s Office, help you, by securing your belongings and preventing crime. With the nice weather here and kids out of school, many more people will be out and about, including those looking for an easy opportunity. Please be safe and have a great summer.

Celebrating Independence Day Continued from page 1

The Walt Disney World Resort will be offering special holiday themed fireworks in the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, with the Magic Kingdom offering their patriotic salute on July 3 and 4. LEGOLAND and SeaWorld will also be offering special pyrotechnic displays. If the theme park setting is not necessarily your thing, the city of Kissimmee will once again be offering their concert and fireworks display at Lakefront Park. Other area options include, on July 3: Red Hot & Boom in Altamonte Springs, Baldwin Park Independence Bash and Freedom on the Waterfront in Mount Dora. July 4 also brings a plethora of viewing platforms, including: Lake Eola Park in Orlando, Red White and Boom in Clermont and the Star Spangled Spectacular in Sanford. No matter how you choose to celebrate, safety should be at the top of your list. As a reminder, under Florida law, only sparklers, approved by the Florida Division of State Fire Marshal, are legal for consumer usage. It is illegal to use exploding and/or flying fireworks in Florida, which include: shells and mortars, multiple tube devices, Roman candles, rockets and firecrackers.

Celebration Community Development District

Celebration CDD – Storm water Management Awareness The master storm water and drainage system for Celebration includes all the ponds, control structures, and underground interconnecting piping that connects the ponds to each other and the adjacent wetlands. The system was designed as a whole, and all the ponds work in concert with each other and their surrounding basins so the drainage system can achieve the following goals: 1. Maintain water quality (which is regulated by various governmental entities) 2. Maintain historic water levels and flows 3. Preserve historic storage for a 100-year storm event 4. Provide positive drainage for the streets, sidewalks, parks, and neighborhoods 5. Provide a wildlife habitat Anything that flows into the drainage structures or the ponds affects the entire system, good and bad. Too much fertilizer in a pond creates excess algae and other nuisance species.

Many chemicals have a detrimental effect on the water quality, which is monitored by our permitting agencies. Trash, vehicle fluids, and other debris that is not natural to a pond environment will cause adverse conditions that affect the entire system.

THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP: • Remember: “Only rain down the drain.” • Properly dispose of vehicle fluids and prevent them from dripping on the driveway into the storm drains. This includes preventing runoff going into the drains from washing cars, patio furniture, and other items. • Make sure sprinkler heads are aimed toward plant material and not the sidewalk, driveway, or road. • Do not throw trash in any pond, lake, or waterway. Use a trash can. For more information on this subject, please visit our website www.CelebrationCDD.org, under Services, Storm water Management. You may also contact us by phone at 407-566-1935 or by email at [email protected] with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Celebration’s younger residents will soon be able to swing, climb and twist on new playground equipment headed to the community. At the April 25 CROA Board of Directors meeting, the Board approved the purchase and installation of the updated equipment for North and East Villages. The North Village playground equipment replacement, designed for the 5-12 age group, will have featured activities such as an Orbitron and an arched two-seat swing. The new main play structure will include a propeller ring panel, twist & turn, roller slide, bubble mirror activity panel, half pipe wall, nature play pipe wall, tangle climber and a crescent climber. In addition, the North Village safety surface will be replaced with ForeverLawn Playground Grass Extreme.

North Village proposed playground equipment

The East Village Playground equipment replacements are designed for the 2-5 age group. While the existing swing will remain, the playground will also see the addition of the following: ladybug climber, net climber, hole climber, arch climber, 3-in-a-row ring panel, fan climber, touch & play guitar panel, roller slide and a bubble mirror activity panel. East Village will have an expanded Synthetic Turf area utilizing ForeverLawn and Engineered Wood Fiber play surfaces. Both playgrounds are scheduled to be closed for 10-14 days for demolition of the existing equipment and installation of new playground equipment and Playground Grass. The manufacturer and contractor estimate a start date around the third week in June, pending any unforeseen delays. East Village proposed playground equipment

Celebration Community Standards – Landscape Lighting The community of Celebration derives its unique character from a mix of compatible architectural styles and from the cooperation of all owners in upholding minimum design, landscaping, and aesthetic standards. One of the benefits of owning property in a planned community is the commitment among neighbors to maintain their property in a neat, attractive, and well-landscaped condition to enhance the overall beauty and aesthetic appeal of the community.

Landscape Lighting Design Guidelines Architectural grade electric landscape lighting is permitted when all wires and cable connectors are concealed. Solar lights with integrated solar power panels shall be discrete and not overtly visible from the street. Neon, strobe/flashing, fiber optic, high intensity discharge (HID), and sodium lighting are not permitted. When considering adding or replacing landscape lighting for your front façade, alley yard, or private zone, there are minimum standards outlined in the Design Guidelines. • All exterior fixtures shall be consistent with the existing architectural style, design and detail of the home. • Lighting fixtures must have a black, dark green, dark brown, copper, or bronze finish, or be natural bronze or copper. • Light fixtures may not exceed 27” in height from the ground level. • Ground-mounted fixtures shall be pointed inward toward the structure and shall contain extension shields to minimize glare and light source visibility. • Lights shall not be permitted along sidewalks if visible from the street.

• Light levels shall not vary greatly between illuminated areas and non-illuminated areas. Average foot candles at grade 1.5 (this refers to how far distance the light shines). • Accent lighting shall be subtle with no more light produced than what is produced by the existing porch lights. • Lighting shall not spill over into neighboring lots. • No colored lamps will be permitted except as part of temporary holiday lighting. • Unshielded bulbs are not permitted. • Exposed conduit is not permitted. • All fixtures, cables, transformers, power supplies, mounting brackets or stakes, and accessories must be contained within the owner’s property. No components may be installed upon or cross Association common areas or CDD easements including the easement in front of residential properties. There are additional details on color temperature, maintenance, and technical data required for an application submission found in the Design Guidelines. Design Guidelines are approved by the Celebration Residential Owners Association (CROA) Board to provide guidance to owners and contractors applicable to all of the residential properties within the community. For additional information, you may obtain current Design Guidelines and an application from Town Hall (851 Celebration Ave.) or download from the Celebration Front Porch (www.celebration.fl.us). Select Community Standards under the Town Hall tab.

Servicing Celebration With Pride… We handle required Celebration ARC applications

A New View The case for civility By Eileen Crawford, LMHC Celebration’s new urbanism design holds wonderful advantages for those of us who have invested our lives here. With homes close, and yards considerably smaller than many northern transplants knew in our previous lives, we could spend less time pruning and more time playing. Living in relative tight quarters has its challenges and amplifies the importance of tackling them. The ideal would be to know and appreciate your neighbors, to be as involved as you and they are comfortable with each other, but also to consistently exhibit a positive spirit and willingness to think the best, rather than the worst, of them.

Established to maintain the community for the common benefit, an HOA is misused when it becomes the mask behind neighbors’ complaints about each other. If I don’t like something I see going on in your yard, or near your home, it is much easier to complain to others in authority than to ring your doorbell and ask if we might talk about a concern. This desire to grumble anonymously may provide a temporary sense of satisfaction, but its price is the loss of good will and trust within the neighborhood, and that hardly seems worth it.

When a relationship gets off to a rocky start, it can be tough to course correct. Once your neighbor has hurt your feelings, you might attribute every future curious action as a perceived slight indicative of ill will. In short, once we start taking money out of the bank, we are likely to keep doing it until we have overdrawn the account.

Being a good neighbor requires us to learn to communicate with care and civility, to be able to address concerns with calm and reasonableness, and to work at thinking the best of those who live near us. We are already blessed to live in a beautiful place, but it takes a community of kind hearts to create a true sense of belonging.

A complicating factor in the maze of building neighborliness is the existence of the well-meaning homeowners association (HOA).

By Jim Siegel As part of the May 7-11 National Teacher Appreciation Week, Celebration K-8 School teachers were treated to a special Monday morning breakfast as they arrived for their usual classes, compliments of Amerifactors, a local financial services company. According to school principal Ms. Kim Manion, the breakfast was one of a number of events planned during the week to say thank you to the nearly ninety teachers on staff at the school.

As the teachers arrived on Monday morning to check their in-boxes and consult with each other regarding the day’s plans in the school’s Great Hall, they were greeted by heaping chafing dishes of scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes, fresh fruit, and croissants, as well an array of hot and cold beverages, all provided by Puff ’n Stuff Catering. Said computer technician Steven Rish, “We really appreciate these sorts of gracious activities. We get a lot of support from the community, and it shows that the community values what we do.” Added third grade reading teacher Kieley Bronaugh, “On a busy Monday morning, this is a nice breather. I feel appreciated.”

Explained Manion, “I’ve been principal here for about a year and a half, and I am particularly impressed by the dedication of our teachers, many of Celebration resident and enthusiastic supporter of the Celebration K-8 School whom have been here for years and Kris Gowen (left) joins school principal Kim Manion in thanking teachers years. Not only do they put in long during the May 7 teacher appreciation breakfast. Reflecting the skill and dedication of hours, but also many often attend our the school’s teachers and administraafter-hours events, including sports, tion, this is the 16th straight year that Celebration K-8 School has band concerts, and performances related to the arts. received an “A” rating from the Florida Department of Education. Further, our teachers often initiate optional programs that add to the excellence of our educational program.” In fact, Manion notes that the Florida data suggests that Celebration K-8 is academically the highest rated public school in the state among comparable institutions (i.e., excluding charter and specialty curriculum schools). It appears that for the Celebration K-8 teachers, it’s more than just a just a job. Noted third grade math teacher Cristy Palmer, “We are a family. Not just among the faculty, but including the students as well. My students are my family. And we get such wonderful support from the PTA here. Their fundraising provides extra materials and equipment that help us be more creative and effective teachers.”

Celebration K-8 teachers (standing at left) Tiffany Purdie, Jesi Lehman, (and seated from left) Rose Pollzzie, Cindy Bohn, Alison Gowen, Karen Kuers, and Abbigail Reed smile their approval of the breakfast served to them as part of National Teacher Appreciation Week. Other teachers can be seen in the background perusing the chafing dishes of food on a buffet table in the school’s Great Room.

Arts teacher Cindy Bohn is a one example of a Celebration teacher taking the personal initiative to enhance the school’s academic excellence. “I created an after-school enrichment program,” explained Bohn. “I went before the school board, reviewed my proposed initiative, and even detailed my business plan. They approved my program called Kabloom (www.kabloomarts.com). It’s aimed at encouraging life-long learning and awakening the love of learning by engaging children in creative explorations and interactions. We now even do summer camps in addition to programs during the school year.” Continued on page 23

Guitar troubadours provide soundtrack on the lawn As the weather begins to heat up, but before the humidity returns in earnest, the community had a pair of opportunities to enjoy an evening under the twilight sky on the Great Lawn listening to a pair of talented performers. The Music on the Lawn concerts kicked off on April 19 with talented singer/songwriter John Frinzi. John enhanced the laid-back

atmosphere by blending a mix of original songs and classis hits, in helping start the weekend early. Johnny Danger had people tapping along with their favorite tunes, as he provided a well-received musical journey at the May 11 Food Truck Friday.

Assistant principal Cheryl Cassano reiterated the school’s appreciation for the teaching staff, noting, “Our teachers work so hard. Anything that the community does, whether by the PTA, or individual parents, or by local companies like Amerifactors, is meaningful. When we take good care of our teachers and staff, it trickles down and helps us take good care of our students…” Amerifactors is a Celebration-based financial services company that provides funding to companies large and small around the world. Said Amerifactors CEO and Celebration resident Kevin Gowen, “I am so grateful to live here in Celebration and especially for the wonderful contributions to our community by the Celebration K-8 School. Serving this teacher appreciation breakfast today is one more way that we try to help the school and recognize the dedication of this fine teaching staff. All of corporate America should support and contribute to the schools in their communities.”

Popular assistant principal Cheryl Cassano thanks the teaching staff at the teacher appreciation breakfast. Much to the dismay of teachers, students, parents, and staff, Ms. Cassano is retiring at the end of this term to work on completing her Doctorate in Education and Organizational Leadership at Southeastern University.

Third Grade teachers Kieley Bronaugh and Cristy Palmer, having had a delicious teacher appreciation breakfast, are ready to face the day ahead with their energetic students at the Celebration K-8 School.

Residents invited to participate in World’s Largest Swim Lesson On Thursday, June 21, tens of thousands of kids and adults will participate in The World’s Largest Swim Lesson. While not all those participating will actually be at the Spring Park pool, Celebration residents will join tens of thousands of kids and adults at aquatic facilities around the world for the ninth year in a row to make noise that Swimming Lessons Save Lives.™ A global event, The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL), will take place over the course of 24 hours at an estimated 500 locations in more than 20 countries, including here in Celebration. The Spring Park pool will be serving as an official host location facility for the WLSL, with the lesson scheduled for 11 a.m. All residents are invited and encouraged to come out and have some fun, while bringing attention to aquatic safety. Tragically, drowning remains the leading cause of unintended injury related death for children ages 1-4 and the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 14. Research shows participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children aged 1 to 4, yet many kids do not receive formal swimming or water safety training.

Celebration Chorus ‘On Broadway’ The Celebration Community Chorus took attendees on a trip to Broadway, without ever leaving the confines of Celebration. Under the direction of Kristopher Schave, the chorus performed songs from such classics as My Fair Lady, West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof during their May 12 performance. The group even provided a bit of levity with a medley from Little Shop of Horrors. The chorus has begun rehearsals for their July 4th concert. The Town Hall recreation program welcomes all adult music lovers. Whether you’re an accomplished singer or just someone who likes to sing in the shower, there’s a place waiting for you! Come join this fun group of choristers, Monday’s 7 - 8:30 p.m., 851 Celebration Avenue, Activities Room.

The old joke goes, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” whose punch line is “Practice, practice, practice.” However for Community Chorus conductor Kristopher Schave, the opportunity to play one of the world’s grandest concert halls was no joke. Schave got a call from fellow Michigan State University School of Music alumna, J. Christine Le. Christine, the choir director at Olympia High School in Orlando, was calling for two reasons. First, she wanted to tell her friend that her “Mastersingers” had been invited to sing at Carnegie Hall. Secondly, she was hoping Kris could also make the trip and accompany them on the piano during their performance. After the initial shock wore off, he answered with a resounding “YES”!

The Celebration Community Chorus Enjoy Music? Love to Sing? Are you looking for a great group of people to hang out with? Join the Celebration Community Chorus. No auditions, you don’t even need to read music. The Celebration Community Chorus will once again be under the direction of Kristopher Schave. Rehearsals are held every Monday at Town Hall from 7 – 8:30 p.m., as we prepare for our July 4 concert. No auditions required to join, just bring your love of singing music with fun people. For additional info please contact our parks and recreation department at 407-566-1200 or [email protected].

Keeping pace with the Celebrators By Cindy Swisher Pride Pals – Our May meeting featured Celebration K-8 Assistant Principal Cheryl Cassano and Guidance Counselor Jannine Martino. Ms. Cassano began by sharing some general information about the school and outlining some of the changes in teaching techniques since we were kids. Ms. Martino (with an assist from Celebrator and former Guidance Counselor Jim MacGregor) followed with an introduction to the school’s “Pride Pals” program. Volunteers are needed to: assist teachers in the classroom; help with instructor or front office clerical tasks; monitor students on campus, during field trips or in the lunch room and the list goes on. For more information, visit our “Volunteer Corner” during our monthly meetings. Still Crazy After All These Years – Move over Paul Simon and make room for the Celebrators! Once again, our fab funsters showed their true colors during our “Flower Power Happy Hour & Pizza Party.” Jeans, sandals, peace signs and love beads peppered a sea of tie-dyed t-shirts that ebbed and flowed between the food, the music and the bar. There was even a Cabbage Patch Doll seen careening across the dance floor. Good times! Volunteers Make It Happen – “To continue life-long learning, do volunteering and socialize with others in Celebration, both young in age and at heart.” That’s the Celebrators’ Mission Statement. As a group, the Celebrators are probably best known for bringing members of our generation together to socialize and have fun. A close second would be our collective passion for life-long learning. The executive committee would like to make our volunteer presence as equally well known and make the Celebrators the “go-to” group to make things happen. Beginning in June, we will introduce our “Volunteer Corner” which will highlight the variety of opportunities in town where your help can make a difference.

If this were the prom, Mike and Andrea Sonntag would definitely be on the short list for King & Queen!

Whether you have a little time or a lot, your participation at any level will be appreciated by so many. It’s also a chance to meet new people and learn more about our community. It’s a win-win. Check it out. Coming in June – Say “hello” to Steve Waring, Executive Director of the Celebration Residential Owners Association (CROA) and meet our newly elected CROA Board President David Anderson. Steve is planning on sharing an overview of the Board’s Strategic Plan for 2018-2019. Come and find out what you can expect to see happening in Celebration over the next 10 months.

State Representative Cortes to address Democrats Our meeting for this month is going to be an exciting one, as our speaker is Florida Representative John Cortes. He should have a lot of info to share with us about all that is going on in Tallahassee, and we look forward to that presentation. May 1 showed us a tough defeat in District 39 when Ricky Shirah was beat by Josie Tomkow in a special election. Ricky had a great win in Celebration, but the far bigger part of District 39 is Polk county, where Josie won by enough to beat out Ricky overall despite his good showing here. The effort led by Dave Finnigan, VP of Democrats of Celebration, was enormous and many Democrats throughout Celebration and the surrounding areas walked door to door and called Dems to remind them of this special election. Many, if not most, were unaware. That shows up in the turnout for both parties here, which showed only 11.52% of registered voters casting a ballot by mail, in early voting at the library or on Election Day. In Polk, it was slightly better at 15.3%. Our club will continue to work with registered Democrats here in Celebration and Osceola County, encouraging them to cast a ballot in all elections.

The weekly Farmers Market is located at Lakeside Park, 631 Sycamore St. Stop by and peruse the wide variety of food and craft vendors each week for the freshest fruits and vegetables, fun arts and crafts and much more. Sundays from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

“United We Stand – Central Florida” is a grassroots organization for Celebration and Central Florida residents. We are “a civilized and common-sense public policy club in support of the President, open to everyone.” Our next meeting will be Wednesday, June 13 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at 851 Celebration Ave. Among the topics that we plan to discuss that night; July 4 is our one true national day, more important than any other celebration. It not only commemorates our freedom from English rule, but is also marks one of the few stunning times in history where greatness evolves as part of the continuum of man’s progress. We must never lose sight of the value of our freedom. In addition, we will be making plans for the July 4 parade we will also study the meaning of the July 4 holiday and the writing of the Star Spangled Banner. Apple pie will be served! At our May meeting we discussed the Second Amendment, which was adopted in 1791 to protect the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Our speaker, Gene Lucas, explained the premise under which the Amendment was adopted (in brief, to protect citizens against both foreign invasion and domestic tyranny… NOT to enable hunting for food).

We then looked at reputable statistics related to gun ownership and violence (e.g., murders, suicides and other data) to understand the impact firearm ownership has had in the relative safeguarding of citizens, both in the USA and in other countries. Then Gene explained the types of firearms and ammunition (using slides, not actual hardware) legally available to people in Florida and the USA, helping us to understand (better than the press) where technical misunderstandings could arise. Those facts are separate and distinct from the mounting cultural reasons behind crime. If you would like a copy of Gene’s notes, you may contact us at [email protected]. Save the date, Constitution Day is celebrated throughout the country on September 17. We are planning a BIG Constitution Day Party and Fundraiser at the Artisan Clubhouse, Sunday, September 16. See www.unitedwestandcf.com or contact us at [email protected]. We have a Facebook page: (www.facebook.com/UnitedWeStandCF) where you will find new postings.

By Gloria Niec Our friends from Windsor at Celebration really knew how to put on a show. They opened their doors and graced our guests with warm hospitality. “We would love to help the Celebration Foundation and host your gala,” said Angie Layfield, Windsor Executive Director, “Let’s find a date as we get closer to opening the building.”

Foundation guests also listened to Sam Woolf, one of the top five finalists on American Idol’s 2014 Season. Sam performed in the Veranda Room sponsored by Florida Hospital. Since he celebrated his 22nd birthday the day before, we presented him with a cake and an enthusiastic crowd performance of Happy Birthday.

The “Hit the Road Gala,” held on Friday, April 20, was a sold-out fundraiser for the Celebration Foundation hosted at Windsor, A Senior Living Community. The Celebration Foundation supplied the entertainment and brought the guests, Windsor provided the space, fabulous culinary treats, wine, champagne and beer. Over 230 Celebration Foundation friends, many who attended as guests of Celebration Foundation board members, wandered through the beautiful new spaces at Windsor.

At the top of Windsor is the Sky Terrace, where Steel Drums played by Guyanese-born Ephraim Adams, added an island ambiance to the views. Some guests got a comfy seat and enjoyed their time listening to his soothing sounds. The Sky Terrace and Steel Drums were sponsored by KUA.

Dueling pianos, featuring keyboard artists Amy and Randy Keith, performed fan favorites in the “Celebration” room where the beverage of choice was champagne. The Celebration Room was just down the hall from an incredible movie theater where Windsor residents will enjoy state of the art sound and projection.

Everyone made their way down to the Veranda Room for dessert, coffee at the Espresso bar and the evening’s final entertainment. David Harris, who has a family member in the Foundation’s Thriving program, created great energy with magic. He was sponsored by Balfour Beatty. Relying on audience participation, he performed several tricks that had everyone shaking their heads and wondering “how in the world”. Continued on page 34

Windsor plays host to Celebration Foundation gala Continued from page 33

After some magic and a couple of wonderful live auction items, it was on to the much-anticipated Car Raffle. We are grateful to Jarrett Gordon Ford for working with us on a Ford Mustang and having it make an appearance throughout Celebration during the last few weeks… even at the Celebration Exotic Car Festival. David Harris invited Windsor’s “first lady”, Edith Vass (one of their first residents) to pull the winning raffle ticket. After a spin of the drum and hands to shield her eyes… Edith pulled ticket #100. The winner, Marci Limberg, shared that her husband had been in a car accident the week before he was hit head on. Not his fault and fortunately everyone was fine but their 14-year old family car was totaled. Edith called it a “God Wink Moment,” that the car raffle was won by someone who had just lost their car.

On behalf of the Board, the Gala Committee, Celebration staff and volunteers, we were so honored to have so much support… from so many friends. We sincerely thank Windsor, our sponsors, our guests, our folks who bid on live and silent auctions, those who donated through the paddle raise and every single person who bought a car raffle ticket. The Gala netted over $60,000 and every dollar will benefit the programs we offer and the people we serve. We are grateful!

Nearly all non-profit groups must raise funds to support their work and Thriving In Place is no exception. Some expenses are not surprising. Rent, office supplies, computer, website and staff costs are typical expenses for a nonprofit. Less typical are the costs of managing a large diverse volunteer program, which sends volunteers out to assist in transportation, handyman repairs, visiting and more. These costs include a special management software, extensive insurance, volunteer background checks, training and more. Events to build community, combat loneliness and engage members and volunteers also need funding. Thriving In Place members pay annual dues but membership dollars amount to about 25% of the cost of the organization’s annual budget. The rest must be raised in other ways. Fundraising is a normal and necessary part of the organization’s activities. How does Thriving In Place help our neighbors who are over the age of 55 and or living with a disability? It starts with a corps of devoted volunteers who see it as their mission to help their Celebration neighbors stay in their homes for as long as possible. They help members get to medical appointments, the hairdresser, physical therapy, the grocery store and pharmacy. Members may need help changing light bulbs in ceiling fixtures or the chirping battery in their smoke detector. For those with visual problems a volunteer may come to their home and read or help with paperwork or simply accompany them on walks and enjoy social time together. Social isolation is a real problem for people living on their own. Thriving In Place holds special events like Lunch’N’Learns, regular get-togethers to play board and or card games, monthly Coffee gatherings and once a week regularly scheduled lunches. Excursions to various places such as Hollerbach’s in Sanford, Dr. Phillips’ productions and even Seminole Hard Rock Casino are also offered on a monthly basis. Many of our aging Celebration residents have no family living close. The cost of assisted living is averaging $4,000 plus per month. In home, non-medical caregivers are available but that too,

comes at a significant cost. Thriving In Place is filling the gap, helping to keep our neighbors living comfortably and safely in their own homes. As the population of the country ages, Thriving In Place wants to ensure the organization remains firmly in place and financially secure. We continually work very hard to make sure we are here when YOU need us. The financial and emotional costs of relying on only family care for our parents, grandparents and friends no longer needs to be so burdensome. Our community can and already does share in the responsibility. Thriving In Place counts on the support of Celebration residents of all ages, whether it be through volunteering or by supporting the Friends Of Thrive – Giving Tree.

Second grade students at the Celebration K-8 celebrated Every Kid Healthy Week and Earth Day by doing the “rot” thing. Students filled up three compost tumblers funded by the Fuel Up to Play 60 grant with fruit and veggie scraps from the school's salad bar, fresh yard clippings and coffee grounds, and shredded paper and cardboard from the Production room. Author D.S. Venetta gave a lecture about the benefits of composting and organic gardening for our body and our planet. Storm boys volleyball finishes second in state With the program in only its fifth year of play and head coach Pedro Davila in his third year at the helm, the Celebration High School boys volleyball team put together a memorable season, advancing to the state championship match. The Storm capped off their campaign as the FHSAA state runners up, with a record of 27-2. Boys volleyball at the high school state level is extremely intriguing as schools are not divided by class, with only one class in the entire state, while all other sports are divided by classes as per school's size or amount students. Instead of getting eight or nine different state champions in one sport, boys volleyball truly competes for one state champion. In addition, once boys volleyball reaches post season, only the top four teams in the district advances to postseason stage. In all other sports, all teams assigned to a district advances to the district tournament. The season then evolves to a single elimination stage, you lose one match, you are out of the series. With that said, the path to a state championship in boys volleyball is a challenging one. After an outstanding regular season, culminating with a district, regional and OBC (Orange Belt Conference) championships,

and ranked #1 in the Orlando Sentinel Super 6, the Celebration volleyball team missed a state title by a margin of five points in the entire match. It was a thrilling final match, both teams had to reach deep into their depth. Throughout the match neither side led by more than two points paving the way to a drawn out finish. Sets scores for the state final match; 31-29, 22-25, 23-25, 26-28. The team finished the season ranked #2 in the State and #52 in the Nation. Historical accomplishments for the young program. The Storm’s combination of Johansen Negron 23 attack kills, Carlos Adrian Mercado 13 attack kills and Alejandro Hernandez 11 attack kills set the tone for an offense rampage in the final match. Johansen Negron placed first in the State Series with 61 attack kills in three matches. Through the regular season our team was featured in Orlando’s Sentinel Varsity and Osceola Gazette Sport sections. In addition, on two different occasions in the season, Johansen Negron was nationally named South Region Player of the Week by MaxPreps/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association).

Storm tennis completes successful run The husband and wife duo of Celebration’s Advantage Tennis’ Rachel and Darren Holt, recently wrapped up a successful season with the Celebration High School tennis teams. With both the girls and boys combined to form one, unified team, the Storm defeated their biggest rival Lakeland for the first time in years. This was one of many highlights as the boys’ team captured first place in districts and the girls’ squad second. Both teams eventually advanced to the regional semi-finals, with the boys number one doubles team advancing to states. Advantage Tennis’ Amanda Barritt also served as the team’s assistant coach.

Celebration’s Junior Team Tennis enjoying success Junior Team Tennis is a national USTA sanctioned program that allows kids of all ages to play as a team against other teams in their area. USTA Florida runs a JTT program in the Greater Orlando area during the spring and fall seasons, over a period of four-six weeks, with matches usually being held on Sunday afternoons. In addition, USTA also runs several Junior Team Tennis “Challenges,” where teams have the chance to compete against other teams from around the region. The ultimate team challenge is the JTT sectionals, which is held in July, allows teams to compete against others in the state, with the winner moving on to compete for the National title. The concept of the “Team Tennis” program is popular because it allows kids to play tennis in unity, learning what it means to be a part of a team, and the excitement of progressing together and relying on each other. Typically, junior tennis has been focused on singles tournaments, and progression is solely reliant on the individual’s skills. Where this works very well for some kids, many can get very discouraged with the individual format when competing and losing in the tournaments each weekend. JTT allows everyone success in one degree or another. The other major factor to consider is most junior players will hope to be a part of their high school team. JTT prepares the kids for what is expected from them as a team player and gives them a taste of the fun atmosphere of both high school tennis and then eventually college tennis if they want to take it that far.

Advantage Tennis in Celebration started developing teams for Junior Team Tennis in the fall of 2016. That first year they experimented with one team, a 14U team consisting of a group of players that had been in their kids programs together for several years. It was a huge hit. The kids loved it, because they now have the chance to compete together, rather than against each other at local tournaments like they always had. Their success was immediate. The first season, they took second in the Orlando area, followed by a first place finish the following season, qualifying them for a place at the sectionals (a state level event,) tournament last summer. Last winter, the same 14U team took to the road and stayed overnight in Clearwater and competed in another state level event. The kids had a blast spending the weekend together and playing tennis and they tied for first place. Since the 14U team’s first success, the programs teams have expanded to four different teams at various ages and levels and have just completed their second season. More and more of Advantage Tennis’ students are interested in joining these teams, and for good reason. Competing on a team is fun. For more information on joining a team, visit celebrationtennis.com. Your child does not need to be an Advantage Tennis player.
