A LOOK INSIDE

October 20 & 21

October 2017

Celebration demonstrates ‘community’ before and after storm Our front page usually features one of the special events that make living in Celebration so special. This month we elected not to highlight one event, group or resident, but instead chose to recognize the entire community of Celebration.

September 2017 is not a month that the community will soon forget, as one of the most powerful hurricanes in history meandered its way through the Caribbean and took direct aim at the Florida peninsula. To put Hurricane Irma in perspective, WFTV Meteorologist Brian Shields offered up the following factoids: Hurricane Charley had max winds of 150 mph with an estimated $16 billion in damage and 1.1 million losing power. Hurricane Andrew had max winds of 175 mph with an estimated $26 billion in damage and 1.4 million left without power. Hurricane Irma recorded winds

of 185 mph, will likely cause over $100 billion in damage and left over 10 million in the state without power. While the final tallies from Hurricane Irma are surely to be impressive, so too was the planning and response from the community in dealing with this natural disaster. As forecasting models continued to convey a potential Florida impact, local community leaders convened and began to implement an emergency action plan. Leaders from CROA, CCDD, Celebration Foundation, Thriving in Place, in addition to partners such as Girard and Davey, met to prepare the community for potential impacts and to set the stage for recovery. All of the community’s organizations (the proverbial alphabet soup) came together with one common goal. Topics such as closures, methods of communication, prep work and how best to communicate to the elderly and residents without access to the multiple forms of communication were discussed. Celebration Spotlight highlights a different resident every month, and provides a glimpse into the people who make this community so special.

If you have a suggestion of a resident for an upcoming Celebration Spotlight, please email us at [email protected].

Continued from page 1

The group also developed an information flyer that was available throughout the community and provided a quick reference to important phone numbers and websites. With the storm a few days out, the community was already demonstrating the Celebration way. A call for volunteers was occurring on social media and residents responded at the ready. As lines for sand bags trickled into the one and two-hour zones, sheriff deputies, along with CROA Board members, condo maintenance staff and numerous other volunteers, ensured that things would run quickly and smoothly. Residents responded by offering up cold drinks and even cupcakes to those waiting in the long line of vehicles. You don’t have to venture far to find someone boasting about their neighbors and the show of support that was demonstrated. With social media being so prevalent now, residents had almost instantaneous access to what was occurring with the storm, helping with storm prep and later cleanup. Nevertheless, through it all, having a resource that was not available a decade ago, also brought out the best in the community. Residents jumped on their social media accounts to see how their neighbors and the community fared after Irma made her midnight trek through the region. It was through the power of social media that residents could put out a call for assistance or an offer to help when conditions warranted. As dawn ascended on September 11, residents were at the ready to take back their community. While representatives from the community’s managing organizations accessed damages and potential impacts, residents took to the streets and sidewalks to help clear debris, offer water and assistance anyway they could. Chain saws, shovels and brooms were not the only tools used to help assess damage, as residents even utilized drones to give neighbors a bird’s eye view of roofs in search of potential problem spots.

The maintenance staff from Town Hall moved at a rapid pace to get the amenities, pools and parks back online and bring a sense of normalcy to residents, especially with schools in the county closed. Even Thriving In Place had the welcome mat back out Tuesday morning. While cleanup efforts were still ongoing at the time of this writing, our residents’ display of compassion and assistance was not limited to just those in the community, but was expanded to those throughout Central Florida. There are many examples of volunteerism and neighbor helping neighbor spread throughout the community. While it would be nearly impossible to compile the names of everyone who assisted in some way, a special thank you to all who helped coordinate the distribution of sand bags, whether it was filling bags, loading cars, providing food and refreshments to both volunteers and to those waiting in line, your generosity has not gone unnoticed. To all the residents who took the initiative to assist with clean up projects, clean up easements, streets and their neighborhoods, thank you. Lastly a thank you to our CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) members who not only helped us prepare for the storm, but kept us informed of vital information every step of the way, before organizing our cleanup efforts. Once again, the community has demonstrated what makes this place so special.

The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members. – Coretta Scott King

Celebration Community Development District

Living with Nature – Snakes The District office receives the occasional phone call related to snake sightings and the concern that they may be pythons. If you see something you are not sure about, we encourage you to contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, www.MyFWC.com. If you see something exotic and wish to report it, take a picture, note the location, and send it to www.IveGot1.org or call 888-IVE-GOT1 (888-483-4681). Non-native species are sometimes confused with native species due to coloring and patterns. Since Celebration was constructed in a wetland area, you should familiarize yourself with venomous and non-venomous species of snakes, lizards, and other reptiles. The University of Florida has some helpful information on its website, http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu, including an identification guide. Always use caution when you see a snake and do not approach it. Simply observe it and stay back since snakes do not normally bite people unless they are being attacked or if they feel threatened. To make your home less attractive to snakes, remove excess debris from your yard and keep your landscaping maintained. For more information on this subject, visit our website www.CelebrationCDD.com, under Links or the University of Florida IFAS Division at http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/topic_snakes. You may also contact the CDD at 407-566-1935 or [email protected] with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Osceola County Sheriff ’s Office

What to watch for during storm recovery By Deputy Jerry Weiland, Osceola County Sheriff Office Don’t Be a Victim of a Scam. Hurricane Irma left Florida with quite the task of cleaning up and making repairs. Typically after these types of disasters, “work crews” from all over come into the area to make huge profits from your losses. Many of these repair people are scam artists and are from every walk of life. They will use various methods to try and obtain your personal information and have you part ways with your money. While you should be alert to scams all year long, you need to be especially ready after the storms. There are many types of schemes used by these criminals but they all have the same thing in common. To take your money. Many scams are difficult to prosecute due to the victim not having the name of the business or other information necessary to file the charges. Home Repair Scams This type of scam covers just about any part of your home and what we see most of after a disaster. From exterior portions of your home, including driveway re-sealing, roofing, gutters, tree trimming or pressure washing, to the interiors, including paint, plumbing, drywall or electrical work. Many of the scam artists are not licensed, bonded, trained or insured. Often the work is not completed or is of such poor quality that it must be redone at your expense. Some will make you sign paperwork giving up your rights to FEMA or insurance moneys. Others may not pay their suppliers resulting in a lien placed on your homes. While not a complete list, there are common red flags to watch for. If any of these occur, you should probably do some checks before hiring the company. This is not to say that every contractor is going to scam you, but I want to stress that you take steps to avoid being a victim and do some homework before hiring a contractor or putting out any money. Common Red Flags • A contractor who just appears at your door with a “sale” or “extra material from another job.” • Contractors with out of state ID’s and/or vehicles. • A contractor with high-pressure sales tactics. • Demands upfront payment for the entire cost of the project, especially if cash is requested for a “discount” on the job. • A driver’s license with a different name that what is on the business license. Other than the points listed above, sometimes criminals will escort you outside your home to “inspect” problem areas while they leave your front door unlocked. While you are in the backyard, their partner enters the home and removes some of your belongings. Some may “accidentally” break something while inspecting your property and promise to return later to fix it. This would give them reason to return and “find” other items that need to be repaired. Occasionally a contractor will give a sob story to make you feel sorry for them and hire them. Please do not fall for these. There are a few very simple ways to help prevent being scammed, losing money or have unnecessary repairs made to your home. I can’t recommend contractors to you, but with some of your own investigative legwork, you will go a long way to avoid the hassles involved.

Tips to get you started are as follows. • Use reputable contractors who are licensed in the state. The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation website (www.myfloridalicense.com) or the Florida Division of Corporations (sunbiz.org) can be checked to help verify a company’s business license status. • Ask for local references, including addresses and phone numbers. • Google the person’s name or company name. • Call and/or go check on the references. • Check the Better Business Bureau for complaints or work history. (www.bbb.com) • Obtain bids from several other companies. • Always check yourself to see if an ARC approval AND a county permit is needed for the work. • Make sure the company is bonded and insured. • Obtain a copy of a written and signed proposal for the job. Sales Scams While no directly associated with hurricane scams, we also tend to see door to door sales scammers. Everything imaginable from magazines, meat, candles or burglar alarm services have been solicited door to door. Many of the sales people are in their teens and twenties and have criminal histories. They will give any number of sales pitches including raising money for school trips or obtaining scholarships. Others will tell you they need to obtain information on the type of jobs people do. Recently we were alerted to individuals in Texas trying to locate the homes of first responders, doctors and nurses as part of a “competition.” Supposedly speaking with people from those professions would score them extra points. It is unknown exactly why they were seeking persons from those occupations. Sometime during a “purchase” from one of these salespeople, you may be asked to provide credit card, phone number, a driver’s license number and in some cases a social security number. You should not be surprised when your personal information is used to steal your identity or clean out your bank accounts. Many times the items you ordered won’t arrive. Many of these companies are fake and any criminal investigations end up nowhere due to multiple false fronts that are provided. If solicitors of this nature come to your door, do not let them in your home and ask them to go away. Call the Sheriff ’s Office non-emergency number at 407-348-2222 to report the people in the area. Religious organizations are usually protected under the First Amendment and the Sherriff ’s Office cannot typically ask them to leave if they are only speaking about religions. If you are not interested in them or any materials they are offering, simply close the door and ask them to leave. Now yes, we have many good organizations and contractors in and outside of Celebration. If an eight-year-old Boy Scout, Girl Scout or other nationally known group comes to the door selling popcorn or cookies, you can probably safely order from them. I just ask that you take steps to protect yourself, your assets and your home from persons trying to take you to the cleaners. Even with doing your homework on a company or following recommendations for services from neighbors or the Back Porch, the ultimate decision to hire anybody or buy something is up to you. Please use caution and common sense before giving your information or hard-earned money to those looking for the easy target. Please be safe.

Getting to know our community’s design guidelines The community of Celebration derives its unique character from a mix of compatible architectural styles and from the cooperation of all owners in upholding minimum design, landscaping, and aesthetic standards. One of the benefits of owning property in a planned community is the commitment among neighbors to maintain their property in a neat, attractive, and well-landscaped condition to enhance the overall beauty and aesthetic appeal of the community. Landscape Lighting Design Guidelines Architectural grade electric landscape lighting is permitted when all wires and cable connectors are concealed. Solar lights with integrated solar power panels shall be discrete and not overtly visible from the street. Neon, strobe/flashing, fiber optic, high intensity discharge (HID), and sodium lighting are not permitted. When considering adding or replacing landscape lighting for your front façade, alley yard, or private zone, there are minimum standards outlined in the Design Guidelines. • All exterior fixtures shall be consistent with the existing architectural style, design and detail of the home. • Lighting fixtures must have a black, dark green, dark brown, copper, or bronze finish, or be natural bronze or copper. • Light fixtures may not exceed 27” in height from the ground level. • Ground-mounted fixtures shall be pointed inward toward the structure and shall contain extension shields to minimize glare and light source visibility. • Lights shall not be permitted along sidewalks if visible from the street.

• Light levels shall not vary greatly between illuminated areas and non-illuminated areas. Average foot candles at grade 1.5 (this refers to how far distance the light shines). • Accent lighting shall be subtle with no more light produced than what is produced by the existing porch lights. • Lighting shall not spill over into neighboring lots. • No colored lamps will be permitted except as part of temporary holiday lighting. • Unshielded bulbs are not permitted. • Exposed conduit is not permitted. • All fixtures, cables, transformers, power supplies, mounting brackets or stakes, and accessories must be contained within the owner’s property. No components may be installed upon or cross Association common areas or CDD easements including the easement in front of residential properties. There are additional details on color temperature, maintenance, and technical data required for an application submission found in the Design Guidelines. Design Guidelines are approved by the Celebration Residential Owners Association (CROA) Board to provide guidance to owners and contractors applicable to all of the residential properties within the community. For additional information, you may obtain current Design Guidelines and an application from Town Hall (851 Celebration Ave.) or download from the Celebration Front Porch (www.celebration.fl.us). Select Community Standards under the Town Hall tab.

Property claim mistakes that Hurricane Irma victims can avoid Hurricane Irma has caused widespread wind, water, roof and flood damage throughout Florida. As clean-up begins, attention will turn to insurance property claims and many residential and commercial policyholders will submit an insurance claim for storm damages to their property. Michael Capilli and Debi Wisneski, State of Florida licensed Public Insurance Adjusters, and Celebration residents, urge you to take these 10 steps as soon as possible to expedite your claim. 1. Notify your insurance company promptly to help expedite your claim. With 100,000’s of claims being filed, it will take a long time to get an insurance company adjuster out to see your property. 2. Only make emergency repairs to mitigate your damages until the insurance company sees your damages. Do not make any permanent repairs as the company may deny those repairs as unnecessary. 3. When the insurance adjuster does visit your property, ask questions. How long have they been doing hurricane claims; how long have they been adjusting; and where are they from? Adjusters like ‘one and done.’ Our past experience has been that it is very hard to get them back, especially if they are from another state. 4. DO NOT sign your claim over to a contractor, roofer, or restoration company. While it is perfectly OK to use the services of a licensed professional, do not sign an assignment of benefits. If you do this, the person that you have signed this benefit over to, has all the rights to your claim, including all checks. No work should be done until the insurance company ok’s it. Also, do not feel forced to use the insurance company’s recommendations for a contractor. Most policyholder’s have the right to select someone

they know and trust. These contractors of any trade, work for the insurance company, not you. 5. In our experience, insurance company estimates are incomplete over 90% of the time. Have an experienced professional review it. We do this free of charge. 6. Don’t believe it when a contractor says they can handle your entire claim. By Florida law, only public adjusters and attorneys can negotiate. Contractors are not licensed or trained to interpret insurance policies. You may have additional coverages that you are entitled to. 7. Depreciation on you building and personal property is negotiable. There is no set standard that can be relied on. 8. Sometimes, after an extensive water loss, a restoration company may cart out all your belongings and throw them in a dumpster. Make sure there is an itemized list and pictures of these discarded items. 9. Ask for an advance payment. You will need the money to start repairs. 10. Do not wait too long to file your claim, especially with flood insurance. The federal government has strict rules and regulations to follow and you may miss an opportunity to file. Finally, the first check is just an offer, We would happily review these estimates and payment for completeness. We can be contacted directly at 732-766-3141(Michael) and 267-994-1409 (Debi).

Servicing Celebration With Pride… We handle required Celebration ARC applications

A New View Climbed Any Good Trees Lately? By Eileen Crawford, LMHC Sometimes, we find ourselves feeling an emotion that surprises us. Last month, my 26 year old daughter quit two jobs, sold or donated almost everything she owned, gave up her apartment in a hometown she loved, and entrusted her beloved cat to her mother in order to pursue a dream. She kissed us goodbye, and flew 4,000 miles away. I felt like Tevye, in Fiddler on the Roof, when he sits at the train station – heartbroken –bidding goodbye to his beloved daughter as she follows her sweetheart to Siberia. To me, if you move an ocean away, you have moved to Siberia. Anticipating her leaving, I could relate to Tevye’s misery. Yet, once she left, a funny thing happened on the way to my pity party. I forgot to cry. In fact, I found myself feeling immense pride and admiration. How could this young woman have the courage and guile to do something her wise mother would never have tried? I thought I was the teacher, and yet she was showing me how to live a bold and full life.

There are no guarantees. What if we take the risk, and it does not turn out as we expect or hope it would: The bad business deal, the new job that wasn’t as advertised, the husband who walked out because he could. Most of us wait for some surety, while others freeze in place and never shake the trees. Every dream has scores of dreamers who never push to make it come true. Then there are the risk-takers; those daughters and sons of tearful parents who climb the tree, shake the fruit, and take a bite of the apple. They are not afraid of falling off the twisted branch they straddle, for they have figured they will recover from whatever bumps or bruises such a fall brings. There is a reason we have to look up to people who climb trees. I know I do.

Pink on Parade will mark its 5th year in the battle against breast cancer with its annual 5K run through Celebration. This year’s event is set for October 22 on the campus of Florida Hospital Celebration Health. Registration is $35 for ages 18 and up; $25 for ages 11-17; $15 for ages 3-10, and free for kids 2 and under. Registration will be available on a first come, first served basis at packet pickup and starting at 6 a.m. on race day. Registration includes event shirt, finisher’s medal, customized giving page on PinkonParade.com and a chipped bib for timing.

Pink on Parade was launched in 2013 as a collaboration between Florida Hospital and Dr. Olga Ivanov, medical director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center at Florida Hospital Celebration Health. Since then, Pink on Parade has brought together over 3,500 participants and has raised over $200,000 to benefit women battling breast cancer in our community. Proceeds are earmarked to patients recovering from breast cancer surgery as a holistic health experience. Patients who are eligible for this package receive one-on-one counseling with a cancer-certified dietitian to develop a nutrition plan that can help prevent a re-occurrence of disease. Patients also receive metabolic testing and a functional movement assessment from an exercise physiologist.

Celebration schools aiding students in the Lone Star state By Debie McDonald Celebration K-8 and Celebration High School students are joining together to help 46 public schools, 35,000 students and 4,600 staff members in the heart of Houston, Texas. They need our help with basic necessities and support for the families that suffered losses of their homes, places of employment, and much more due to Hurricane Harvey. As they begin to rebuild, we are reaching out to help one of our own, Dr. Scott Muri, Superintendent of Spring Branch Independent School District. In one of the largest volunteer coordinated efforts by students for students, the goal is to raise $1 for every student in other schools for “Scott's Kids” in Houston. Dr. Muri was an integral part of our cornerstone- Education - as an opening team member of our Celebration K-12, now K-8. Scott is remembered and admired by so many that worked beside him that this fundraising effort has reached as far as Illinois and New Jersey with young teachers and PTA volunteers responding to our call for support.

Students will donate $1 and sign a token of good wishes that will later be mailed to their “sister school” as Scott gives us the word their doors are open from the damage. All funds, 100%, every penny of every dollar goes directly to a fund set up by the Education Foundation in Houston and screening for distribution will take place by the district. All contributions are tax deductible through their 501(c)3.

“Whether socks and shoes or a backpack for school, their needs are real, and your support will enable these folks to take their next step. I am absolutely humbled that individuals from Celebration and places throughout the country are giving unselfishly to support the students and staff of Spring Branch Independent School District. On behalf of our 35,000 students and 4,600 staff members, I thank you,” added Dr. Muri.

"Hurricane Harvey dealt a devastating blow to the city of Houston and to the students and staff of Spring Branch ISD. Our families are hurting. Many have lost their homes and are living in shelters trying to figure out what to do next. The funds that you contribute will be used to support our neediest families, both students and staff,” said Dr. Muri.

Our K-8 team is supported by Principal Kim Manion and jointly led by Barbara Newsome & Oddy Perez. In addition, Rev. William Lewis at the Community Presbyterian Church has pledged his support to these kids. For the first time in nine years, the annual Florida Challenger Jamboree, the Little League tournament for children with disabilities, will be held here in Central Florida. On October 14 and 15 over 400 athletes from all over the state of Florida will gather together to enjoy a weekend full of not just baseball but smiles and laughter as they enjoy being part of the largest tournament for children with special needs in Florida. Challenger Baseball was created by Little League International in 1989 to allow children with mental or physical disabilities to join teams focused solely on their well-being. In 2007 Celebration Little League became the first Little League in Osceola County to offer the program. St. Cloud Little League followed a few years later and now between the two leagues there are well over 100 athletes that participate each season. Hosting this Jamboree has been a labor of love for Celebration Little League volunteer Kathy Whitmire. Kathy has been involved with Challenger Baseball from its inception way back in 2006 when the idea was first suggested at a CLL board meeting. After attending the Florida Jamborees in Clearwater, Florida Kathy was excited when Celebration was asked to host the 9th Jamboree with the hope of having even more Challenger athletes participate due to a more central location. “Taking our teams over to Clearwater quickly became the highlight of our year – both for the athletes and for all of the volunteers. Being surrounded by 1000 people grateful to be alive, grateful to be playing baseball with new friends who don’t care how slowly they walk or how many swings it takes to make a ball move a foot off a tee while the crowd goes wild renews your faith in humanity and proves that no obstacle is too hard to overcome.” Bringing over 1200 people to Central Florida has brought neighboring Little Leagues together. Kathy explains “As soon as I attended our first Little League District 3 meeting it quickly became apparent that all these extremely competitive leagues only wanted to work together to make this weekend perfect. The leagues will be

suspending their normal Little League games that weekend so that all their umpires as well as Major, Junior, and Senior level baseball and softball players can come out to assist the athletes as their buddies. South Orange Little League is giving Celebration the use of their fields so that all 30 games can be fit in easily. Donations have come in from these leagues as well to help offset the cost of this tournament. It has really been a beautiful event to pull together because of their generosity and willingness to help out in any way possible.” Experience Kissimmee has partnered with Celebration and South Orange Little Leagues to make this event something these Challenger families will remember for a long time. Once the athletes finish playing baseball on Saturday they will enjoy a huge celebratory BBQ at Sea World due to the unwavering support of Experience Kissimmee. “When I first reached out to Experience Kissimmee I was searching for a source to help secure the quantity of hotel rooms for these families coming into Osceola County,” Kathy goes on to say, “within minutes of describing what the Challenger program was about the Experience Kissimmee team was brainstorming how to make this the most amazing weekend possible. Their support has been overwhelming and it makes me proud to know they are part of our Celebration community.” The Florida Challenger Jamboree has been made possible through the generous donations of local companies including REW Landscaping, The Celebration Town Tavern, Rawlings Sports, Culver’s Restaurant, Whitmire’s Furniture, Academy Sports, Home Depot, Dick’s Sporting Goods, 4Rivers Smokehouse, Tanner Tees, Silver Lake Resort, Sheraton Vistana Resort and many personal donations. Many local companies and schools will be coming out to join the Buddy Brigade – the volunteer squad that will make this weekend perfect for the incoming athletes and their families. More than 150 volunteer spots will need to be filled. Sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are still available for this event. Please contact Kathy Whitmire at [email protected] for more information. The public is welcome to come out and cheer on the athletes! Join us at the South Orange Sports Complex on October 14 and 15 – games begin at 10 a.m.!

Longtime Celebration resident and UCF graduate, oil painter Rob Kaz sought the help of friends via crowd funding on Kickstarter to publish his first art book – and it was fully funded in the first 12 hours! Kaz, a fine art oil painter whose distinctive style is reflective of his background in animation and video game art, is publishing a 160-page art book showcasing his whimsical paintings. “One of the biggest requests I’ve had from collectors has been to publish a book. They want to flip through the pages and find stories in each painting, let their imagination wander and escape into a world of color and light and happy characters with big inquisitive eyes. But publishing is remarkably expensive, so I decided to turn to crowd funding,” Kaz said. Before launching his Kickstarter campaign, Rob put months into prep work gathering quotes from book printers, deciding on paper quality and design elements, finding resources for rewards and stretch goals prizes, researching shipping options, etc. “When it was all said and done, the minimums required and budgeting restraints meant I really needed this Kickstarter to succeed,” Rob said. “There’s a lot of worry and without meeting the financial goal, I knew we couldn’t publish. However, it’s really no risk to my backers – if we don’t meet the goal, they don’t get charged. Win-win.” Included in the book will be paintings from Rob’s two collections “Places I’d Rather Be and “Friends Along The Way.” A fan favorite who will be prominently featured is Beau, a tiny green frog with big, curious eyes who finds many adventures in meeting new friends including Red (the ladybug),

Ollie (the duckling), Honu (the sea turtle), Toothpick (the gator) and many other original characters. Rob launched the campaign at 9 p.m. on August 20. By the next morning, the book was fully funded by backers and the pledges continued to roll in. By late afternoon, all of the stretch goals had been met, meaning all reward-level backers would get bonuses like mini posters, stickers, postcards and custom sketchbooks included with their books. “It was amazing! This pie-in-the-sky idea of publishing my art book was real. Being fully funded meant it was a go! I can’t say enough good things about Kickstarter for enabling artists such as myself and of course my supporters who certainly are my Friends Along The Way. There are currently more than 120 backers, who each had the opportunity to select standard edition books, collector books, books with an original sketch of Rob’s characters included and more options. New stretch goals were recently added, including collectible pins and more mini art posters as the upward momentum continues with pledges and backers. “I’m humbled, thrilled, maybe even a little overwhelmed. I’ve already started thinking of having a packing party with family when the books finally arrive. My goal is to have them shipped to backers in November so that if they are purchased as holiday gifts then no one is left disappointed by an empty gift box.”

CROA Board meet and greet Residents will have an opportunities to meet and mingle with representatives from the CROA Board of Directors, as well as management during the upcoming Board meet and greet. The gathering will take place at East Village pool on Tuesday, October 17 from 4-6 p.m.

This informal get-together provides an excellent opportunity for residents to ask questions and stay up-to-date on the latest happenings in the community.

Pancake Breakfast and races set for October 28 The Rotary Club of Celebration is will present its 19th annual Pancake Breakfast and Run on Saturday, October 28 from 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. Once again, in continuing our partnership Florida Hospital and the Celebration Fire Department, the event will be held at the Celebration Fire Station, 595 Celebration Place. The chipped time-runs include

a 10K, 5K and Kids Fun Run on a USATF-Certified Course. There will be food and fun, in a carnival atmosphere with plenty of entertainment. To Register or buy tickets, visit Celebrationrotarypancakerun.com.

Rotary Club of Celebration: making a difference Over the past two months, the Rotary Club of Celebration has been very busy. From service projects, fundraising and some fun, members have working hard to make a difference in the community and beyond. In July, members conducted their bi-monthly luncheon at New Beginnings thrift store where they fed over 75 people from the local community who are families in transition. Members also volunteered at the Community Hope Center’s IDignity Day. This program is a one-stop shop that works with all necessary agencies to help provide ID’s to community residents. In August during our weekly meeting, we filled 35 backpacks for the Stuff the Bus program. With fundraising in full swing, the club is working diligently to obtain sponsors and runners for our Pancake Breakfast and Run that will be held on October 28. During September, we presented donations to Help Now of Osceola, Celebration Foundation, Florida Hospital’s Foundation Sharing Smiles cleft palate program and the Batey Rehab Center who will build a Home in the Dominican Republic with money donated.

Lastly, we kicked off our yearly Fantasy Football league at Buffalo Wild Wings with 10 teams vying for the Championship. If you are interested in learning more about the Rotary Club of Celebration, you can visit us on any Friday for our weekly meeting at 7:30 a.m. at Florida Hospitals Mangrove Room or contact us at celebrationrotary.org, Facebook or email at [email protected].

Veterans Club of Celebration The Veterans Club of Celebration was organized in 2007 to provide support to honorably discharged Veterans (any military service branch) and to participate and support community events. We are organized as a non-profit organization with the intent and purpose to promote awareness and interest in veterans’ affairs and activities. All honorably discharged veterans are welcome. Garden Club to catch a glimpse of the Vineyard The Garden Club of Celebration’s October program will feature the cottages and gardens of the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association in Oak Bluffs, MA. The 34-acre site was established in 1835 and is included in the National Historic Register, as well as being recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2005. At the center of the “Campground” is an iron Tabernacle built in 1879. Radiating outward are streets and lanes where 318 of the original 500 Carpenter Gothic cottages built during the 1860’s are located. Each cottage is colorfully painted and laced with gingerbread trim. Lorna Sauter, one of our Garden Club members, spends summers here in her family cottage and will give an illustrated talk on this unique community. For more information, visit www.mvcma.org.

Garden Club readies for pine straw sale After the heavy rains of the summer and Irma, it is time to spread a layer of mulch to prevent moisture loss from the soil by evaporation during the forthcoming dry months. Pine straw is an organic material gathered from the floor of pinewoods and is an ideal mulch for our sandy soil here in Florida.

Mulching reduces the demand for watering and conserves water that is applied during irrigation. It helps keep a uniform temperature in the soil and as pine straw decays it improves soil structure and adds nutrients. Pine straw mulch should be applied in a layer about 4 inches thick; one bale of pine straw will cover an area of approximately 4 feet by 6 feet. It should be replaced or supplemented every six months. To order go either to our website, celebrationgardenclub.org/ community/pine-straw-sale/ or email us at [email protected]. The on-line SALE price is $5 per bale including the handling charge. This ordering method will get your bales delivered within five working days. Order done via email can send a check to ‘Garden Club of Celebration Inc.’, PO Box 470082, Celebration FL 34747. Our sale price by mail is $4.50 per bale. United We Stand in Celebration United We Stand – Central Florida is a grassroots organization for Celebration and Central Florida residents who support the current administration’s policies and rule of law. August was a very busy month for the group. We held a special event at the Windmill restaurant, where we learned a lot more about each other and the broader effort to support President Trump’s agenda. We discussed the Presidents accomplishments to date (i.e., confirmation of Neil Gorsuch, job creation, immigration}. Additionally, we formulated suggestions for the President to continue his positive activity. Several members

of UWS attended the Quarterly meeting of the Republican Party of Florida. A number of informational and training sessions were attended. In addition, UWS participated in Gov. By Cindy Swisher There’s more to Cuba than just cigars! Who knew? Tim Johnson! So, thank you Tim for sharing your experiences with us during our September meeting having traveled to this “mysterious” destination. For those of you who missed it, although his presentation included some rather daunting travel tips (don’t drink the water, use ice or eat at the many street vendors, etc.) he also brought the country to life with his colorful pictures of happy people, historical places and stunning architecture…not to mention the classic cars! You might just want to add this fascinating country to your travel itinerary! It’s a PAR-TAY!!! This October marks the 20 Year Anniversary for the Celebrators and your Executive Committee is pulling out all the stops to make our next meeting an event to remember! By-Laws Update – During our October Members’ Meeting, attendees will be asked to vote on the updated By-Laws recently submitted by the Executive Committee. Acceptance will be determined by a simple majority of those present.

A copy of the “new and improved” document was emailed to the membership. If you missed it, please email [email protected] to request a copy. Everything you ever wanted to know about being a Celebrators’ Board/Executive Committee Member elections but were afraid to ask! Let the race begin! We are now accepting nominations for those of you who would like to “throw your hat (or the hat of a friend!) into the ring”. There are three Board of Director positions up for election in December: Treasurer, Membership Director and Secretary.

Wednesday, October 4, 2017 851 Celebration Avenue, Celebration, Florida 9:00 am Coffee and Pastries 9:30 am Business Meeting followed by a short Break 10:30 am A walk down memory lane with some of our Past Presidents and the Premier showing of “Celebrators – the Movie” 11:00 am Buffet Luncheon * Please Note: Cost of the Luncheon is $5 per member. Reservations are required. Please email [email protected] for ticket information.

In addition, we will also be looking to fill the newly created Executive Committee position of Communications Chair. (Not to be confused with the Secretary or Publicity Chair.) Brief position descriptions will be available at the October Membership Meeting for your consideration. Our Executive Committee will also be on hand to answer any specific questions you may have. In the meantime, think about it…pray on it…run it up the flag pole…throw it against the wall and see what sticks…

Democrats welcome Congressman Soto All in attendance applauded the recent presentation at the Democrats of Celebration meeting by US Congressman Darren Soto. The packed room was abuzz with complements after his excellent presentation. He kindly updated us on the issues he is working hard on in Washington. He has made himself and his staff very available to constituents throughout the 9th district, of which Celebration is a part. Some of us even stayed behind after the meeting to get our photo taken with Congressman Soto. We thank him for attending our monthly meeting and hope he will come to speak to us again in 2018.

In 2007, he was awarded Fair Housing Director for LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens.) His civic involvement includes: Osceola Education Foundation Board of Directors, Hispanic Business Council Board of Directors, Impact Homelessness Osceola Task Force, Osceola Arts Board of Directors, Help Now Osceola Board of Directors. By Gloria Niec We have jazz, bluegrass, classical and holiday music. The Celebration Foundation Concert Series has a little bit for everybody. Okay, maybe not hard rock or pop or rap but we have great quality music, in an acoustically wonderful venue, thanks to our generous sponsors at Community Presbyterian Church. Friends in Celebration keep asking me, “How did you get Branford Marsalis this year?” Confession, I didn’t get Branford Marsalis, Paul Collins has been booking the Concert Series talent for 16 years and he’s got an in with some agents.

In February, we bring back students who perform with the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra. Just close your eyes and you will believe that you are in a grand concert hall listening to professional musicians. These kids practice, study, practice, study, practice over and over for the opportunity to audition and be selected to play with FSYO. It is a privilege to watch such talented young musicians. Beer, Bites and Bluegrass is our theme for our March concert with Trout Steak Revival. These five Colorado based musicians are all-multitalented and most play multiple instruments such as the banjo, guitar, violin, fiddle, piano, harmonica, dobra, mandolin and ukulele. Plus, a few have vocals of “soaring dimension”. One band member, Steve, is “filled with love and passion for music and the people around him. He is full of hugs, high-fives, and long minutes of vamping on the “A”.” I have no idea what vamping on the “A” is but, I am going to find out and by the way, no beer is being served at the church.

Now, I will let you in on a little secret, Branford is not performing in Celebration for free. He tours around the world and there are a number of expenses involved but every five years, Paul likes to throw in a doozy of a concert…in 2012, it was the Vienna Boys Choir. And, that year, the Series sold out because of that particular concert. We also love our local talent. The Brass Band of Central Florida performs an amazing holiday concert on December 8 with all of your favorite tunes and they also throw in a singalong. Who doesn’t enjoy starting December by singing a couple of holiday tunes, particularly when you have cornets, horns, trombones, a tuba or two and percussion playing the music. There are also baritones and euphoniums, but, if you want to learn more about them, come to the concert.

The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra wraps up our series in April. The OPO has performed every year of the Concert Series and we are always grateful for their partnership. This year we will enjoy “Mozart & Dvorak”.

Pictured: The Adler Family

Because we want your children to enjoy live music…we are working on a treat, which may include Santa, some hot cocoa and some cookies to encourage our families to create a family tradition.

We have had people from across Florida calling about the Branford Marsalis Quartet concert on January 6. His loyal fans are excited that he will be performing in the Orlando area. Here’s a little trivia: “Branford Marsalis recently composed the original score for the HBO original movie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The film is directed by George C. Wolfe and stars Oprah Winfrey.”

I always love to share that the Concert Series is the best value in the area. Where else can you enjoy five concerts for a series price of $130 or $26 per concert? In addition, past series ticket holders and sponsors enjoy special discounts. I was looking at the Branford Marsalis tour schedule. He will be playing at The Performing Arts Center in Purchase, New York in October. The least expensive seat in the theater is $40 and that is in the last few rows in the back of the second tier of a theater with 1,372 seats. Bring your binoculars! The Community Presbyterian seats 400, so you know every seat is a good seat. Call the Celebration Foundation at 407-566-1234 or visit our Events tab on our website. Series tickets are available until October 15.

New Urbanism architect tours are back for Founder’s Weekend! The Celebration Foundation’s New Urbanism Committee will host its architect-led tour in downtown Celebration in honor of Founder’s Day on Saturday, November 11 at 10 a.m. The one hour walking tour gives an inside look at many of the New Urbanism design elements in Celebration. The tours are led by Celebration architects who have been involved in many of these design elements.

The tour is only $5, but limited to 50 guests. Guests will split up into smaller groups. All guests are asked to meet at the Pavilion on the corner of Front Street and Bloom Street. The very popular tour had a great turnout last year, as tickets sold quickly! So be sure to register early, you will not want to miss this! Visit the Celebration Foundation events page for a link to register.

Celebration’s early days By Jennifer DiDomenico The Celebration Foundation is gearing up for another great Founders Day weekend! The Foundation’s New Urbanism Committee will present A Conversation with Charles Adams as part of its Conversation Series.

Join the Celebration Foundation and its New Urbanism Committee as Charles shares some of Celebration’s earliest memories on November 11, at Community Presbyterian Church. The event will begin at 6 p.m.; doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

Charles Adams served as Vice President for Walt Disney Imagineering and The Celebration Company, playing a key executive role in the design and development of Celebration. For 18 years, Charles served as the managing partner of Celebration Associates, a firm he co-founded with Don Killoren, another Disney executive. He played an instrumental role in planning residential development at EuroDisney near Paris, France. Charles currently

serves as the Vice President of Community Development for Raydient Places + Properties.

Tickets are available for $10 each and can be purchased at the Celebration Foundation office (610 Sycamore Street Suite #110) or by visiting the Foundation’s website (www.TheCelebrationFoundation.org, under ‘Events’).

The New Urbanism Committee was created with the mission to preserve, protect and advance the New Urbanism principles upon which Celebration was founded.

By Gloria Niec What possesses people to start shopping for holiday decorations in June or even earlier? Those who truly enjoy decorating and making people smile. Last year, the Celebration Foundation was proud and pleased to sponsor the Holiday Home Tour and Winter Wonderland led by the courageous duo of Debi Jackson and Dorie Moyer. If you remember, these are the ladies who are almost permanently sprinkled with glitter. I don’t know if I have ever been with either of them when light doesn’t glisten off at least one sparkly spec on their hair, skin or clothes. Holiday decorating is one of their passions… along with the spirit to do good for others. This year, they approached CROA about having them partner with the Foundation on an even bigger and more wonderful Winter Wonderland at Celebration Town Hall (851 Celebration Avenue) since it was so popular last year. Now folks, I was one of the worker bees for the Winter Wonderland last year. Debi and Dorie, along with their elves, transformed the rooms into a wondrous holiday treat. I heard that some folks,

on the Holiday Home Tour, skipped the Winter Wonderland because they thought…Meh, what can they do to make that space spectacular for the holidays when there are so many awesome homes to tour. The thousand or so folks who did come through Winter Wonderland stopped and gaped as they entered the room. If you weren’t one of the thousand…you missed out. Gracious friends of the Celebration Foundation are decorating trees and tables. They will all be featured in the Winter Wonderland and will be available for you to bid on to take home. We will also have a Santa’s Shopping Corner and beautifully decorated wreaths. One lucky visitor last year bid on and purchased a tree, table decorations and a wreath. She said that for the first time, her home had a coordinated holiday look. Almost custom designed, but not “matchy matchy” and quite affordable. Meanwhile, the proceeds benefit the programs of the Celebration Foundation. If you have been on the tour in the past, you know that it is a wonderful way to start the Holiday Season. Tickets are on sale now and are only $15 until November 1 and then $20. Tickets are available at the Celebration Foundation, Celebration Town Hall at 851 Celebration Avenue, by calling 407-566-1234 or online by visiting www.thecelebrationfoundation.org.

Orlando City Soccer visits Celebration K-8 By Jennifer DiDomenico Orlando City Soccer Co-Founder Kay Rawlins stopped by to visit the students of Celebration K-8 School last month. Sponsored by the Celebration Foundation’s WINGS (Women’s Initiative Nurturing Girls’ Strengths) program, this presentation taught students the importance of grit, determination and never giving up on your dreams. “It all started at the dinner table,” said Rawlins. What started as an idea over a dinner conversation soon became a larger than life reality. Kay and her business partner first founded a soccer team in Texas. They found that Texas had an overwhelming amount of sports teams and football took priority. The two struggled with finding success and decided to take the team to another state.

“We were about to give up,” she said. However, they didn’t. Kay and her partner then founded Orlando City Soccer— a professional soccer club based in downtown Orlando, which competes as a member for the Eastern Conference in Major League Soccer (MLS). The team is in its third year and has brought a lot of excitement to the Central Florida community since its founding. Kay told the students about the many struggles she and her partner faced throughout their careers. However, following your dreams can take you anywhere. “We’ve had a lot of setbacks along the way, but we never gave up,” said Kay. “We had a dream and we went with it.”

By Mary Pat Rosenthal On October 15, 2015, Celebration Foundation launched Thriving In Place with a count of 16 members. Through the support and passion of friends and neighbors, Thrive is celebrating its second anniversary with 92 actively engaged members. Thriving In Place employs one full time manager and one part-time volunteer coordinator and operates with the assistance of 90 plus volunteers. These 90 plus Celebration residents provide their time, heart and soul by offering local transportation, non-medical assistance and helping with planned social activities for all members. Both Thrive members and volunteers help connect our neighbors with local support systems so that they may remain in their own homes leading healthy, safe and independent and productive lives. Celebration students to participate in national Walk to School Day On October 4, there may be a bit more foot traffic around the community, as all Celebration K-8 students are invited to walk to school as part of the national Walk to School Day campaign. This nationwide initiative encourages students to become more conscious of their environment and more physically active. The event, which is organized by the school’s Parent Teacher Association “Green Up” Chair, which also promotes a greener lifestyle and environment, is designed to inspire students and families to continue to walk or bike to school throughout the school year. Studies show that students who are physically active during the school day behave better in the classroom, and obtain higher scores in standardized tests. Each year, nationwide participation in Walk to School Day grows. More than 5,000 communities registered events on walkbiketoschool.org in 2016. With over 600 participating students on October 4, all residents are invited to show extra care when driving in town before and after school.
