Center for Native American Youth Scholarship 2015 Summer Program for High School Students Columbia University In partnership with Columbia University’s Secondary School Programs, the Center for Native American Youth (CNAY) is pleased to offer one full tuition and residential scholarship for a Native American student to attend Columbia’s Summer Program for High School Students during summer 2015 in New York City. Through this partnership, CNAY and Columbia University seek to engage more Native youth in summer education programs and the opportunities at Columbia University. Below you will find a short description of the program, scholarship, and application. Click here to visit the program’s webpage for more information. What is the Summer Program for High School Students? “Columbia’s Summer Program for High School Students is a 3-week pre-college program for students entering grades 9 through freshman year of college who are interested in intensive summer study. The program is renowned for its academic rigor, instructional excellence, and the unique opportunity to experience college life in the Ivy League while sampling the vibrancy of New York City.” The 2015 program is offered in two sessions:  

Session I: June 28, 2015 - July 18, 2015 Session II: July 20, 2015 - August 08, 2015

Who is eligible? Applicants must be American Indian/Alaska Native students. CNAY is accepting applications for both the Junior-Senior and Freshman-Sophomore Divisions:  Junior-Senior Division: Available to students who will enter grades 11 or 12 or first year of college in Fall 2015.

Freshman-Sophomore Divisions: Available to students who will enter grades 9 or 10 in Fall 2015.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship covers the cost of housing, tuition, week-day meals, coursework materials and other required student services. The application fees are waived. The estimated value of the scholarship is over $8,000. Students will need to pay for their own travel to and from the program and bring spending money (Columbia University recommends a generous amount of $900 to cover expenses such as weekend meals, laundry, personal items, and transportation and admission fees for optional activities around the city). CNAY recommends that scholarship recipients contact their tribal nation, school and other local organizations to identify funding support for travel and spending money. If I receive the scholarship, which courses can I take? CNAY encourages students to consider the college preparatory curricula; however, applications for any of the programs are accepted. Students may apply for the program and course that most closely aligns with their interests. The application requires that applicants indicate which course they are applying for and why.
