Congratulations to the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Class of 2011. Your hard work and team spirit throughout the year resulted in a very exciting and competitive National Championship Tournament, and we applaud all of you for your achievements. Since 1989, Honda has joined with America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities to feature the annual gathering of the nation’s most outstanding students, in the spirit of competition and friendship. The core elements of long lasting partnerships and friendly competition have never wavered, and HCASC continues to excel because of the success that American Honda, College Bowl, students, volunteers, coaches, and the HBCU community have in all working together to provide a unique opportunity. On behalf of American Honda, we hope this yearbook will bring you many fond memories of your participation in the 2011 National Championship Tournament, and the caring of the entire HCASC family. These memories will never fade, and please reflect on all the experiences you shared with fellow teammates, competitors, and friends for life. Please accept Honda’s wishes for continued success in the future, and thank you for being part of the HCASC family.
Steve Morikawa Assistant Vice President, Corporate and Community Relations American Honda

History in the Making: The Story of the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge In 1989, Honda joined with College Bowl to establish the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge to showcase and recognize the academic talents of students at America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The program starts in the fall at more than 80 institutions across the country. An on-campus tournament is followed by regular practices and study sessions. Next, schools prepare for the national championship by attending up to two intramural tournaments. Every spring, students, coaches, campus coordinators, volunteers, HBCU presidents, the Association of College Unions International, and the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education gather together to witness the top 48

HCASC is the first and only academic competition of its kind...
institutions compete for the National Championship. Over the past 22 years, more than 75,000 HBCU students have participated in the Honda Campus AllStar Challenge, and Honda has awarded more than $6,000,000 in grants. These grants have enhanced the HBCUs and the students’ college experience. HCASC alumni have gone on to pursue a wide range of careers, including: law, medicine, aeronautics, education, industry and government. Many graduates are still active in HCASC through campus activities and team training. Honda Campuss All-Star Challenge is the Official Scholars Team Championship, and its alumni continue to contribute to their alma maters and communities.

PLAYER ALUMNI HAll of Fame The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Player Alumni Hall of Fame was established to acknowledge former HCASC players who have excelled in their chosen career and life paths and to facilitate their mentoring of the current generation of HCASC players. In 2004, the first five player alumni were honored. Since then, 13 more player alumni have been inducted. These former players represent the excellence that comes from studying hard, networking, applying oneself and most of all, from pursuing a life goal with all your intellect, heart and soul.

SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR The HCASC Sportsperson Award is one of our most prestigious individual awards. Named for one of our early volunteers who mentored students in the program, it emblemizes team spirit, camaraderie, good sportsmanship and academic focus. Darnell Butler Woods was named the 2011 Ernest C. Jones Sportsperson of the Year. He has played HCASC for three different institutions during his college career. A veteran of Elizabeth City, Cheyney and Virginia State, the committee recognized Darnell’s boundless respect for other players, personal grace, his ready smile and positive attitude.

In his final year as an HCASC player, it is fitting that a person noted for cheering on his competitors is recognized with the Spoertsperson of the Year award.
