GRAHAM’S VIEW The events of this month have certainly thrown many of us back down memory lane to 2010 and 2011. As our thoughts go out to all those affected by the earthquake in the early hours of November 14, particularly the people of Kaikoura and neighbouring towns such as Ward and Waiau it’s a chance to reflect on how easily life can change in an instant. The work to rebuild those communities hasn’t started, but it’s clear it will involve a significant cost and will take time. The infrastructure demands will take months, if not years. In Canterbury we’ve come a long way in nearly six years – but as we all know that work will continue for some time yet. Many of your organisations will be involved in lending a hand to those communities further north; be it with rescue or recovery work, or rebuilding, and it’s great to know you have the vision of the Charter behind you – to ensure everyone goes home safely every day. This will be the last newsletter for 2016 – so I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your commitment to safety and health in the rebuild during the year. Without our more than 360 members we wouldn’t be able to have the influence and impact on positive health and safety behavior that we strive for. Let’s look after each other, take time to have a break with family and friends and return for another year of rebuilding in 2017. Here’s to a very Merry Christmas and a fulfilling, healthy and safe new year!

CHARTER NEWS AGL recognised for health and safety excellence Safety Charter signatories AGL Scaffolding and Rigging have scooped an award at this year’s Site Safe Construction Health and Safety Awards. AGL was awarded the small business Unitec Safety Innovation Award for their scaffold awareness events. The Christchurch business initiated several of these awareness sessions, which highlighted what a safe scaffold should look like. Speaking at the awards, AGL’s Health and Safety Officer Kanei Johnson said health and safety was often seen as a challenge. “It’s not always an easy journey, but it’s great to be able to share a night together to acknowledge all the hard work that goes in to health and safety.” The judges said it was exciting to see such a small business demonstrating such strong leadership and commended AGL for tackling a challenging issue head on. Congratulations also to signatories Fulton Hogan and Fletcher Construction who were also finalists on the night. The annual awards and Site Safe graduation is sponsored by Hawkins, Fletcher Construction, Unitec, Cassidy Construction, Geeves Scaffolding, NZ Print, Vertical Horizonz, Kensington Swan and WorkSafe. For more information on the awards – visit Site Safe’s website.

Quenching thirst and spreading the impairment message After two successful summer impairment campaigns run by WorkSafe’s Canterbury Rebuild team with support from the Charter and ACC – this year it’s been expanded to also include a focus on alcohol and other drugs. WorkSafe teams have been out visiting more than 20 sites across the region to raise awareness about impairment, particularly as sites come under pressure to meet preChristmas deadlines. Project Manager Donna Burt says they’ve been stopping by sites, delivering toolbox talks, and handing out water bottles with specific messages around impairment. “Many of you have told us how much you liked the water bottles as they’re useful and have three simple messages for workers to remember,” says Donna. “Given this year WorkSafe and the Charter have also focused on alcohol and other drugs, we’ve expanded the campaign to include water bottles around this issue as well,” she says. Keep yourself & others safe. Avoid drugs & alcohol. NO DRUGS & ALCOHOL HERE

Women in construction – mark it on your calendar! To celebrate International Women’s Day early next year, Safe Rebuild and the Charter are joining forces to host a special event for Women in Construction. If you’re a woman working in the construction industry you will want to get this into next year’s calendar now – mark out the afternoon of 8 March 2017. It promises to be a great event to focus on the contribution women make in the construction industry. The free event starts at 1pm for Safety Champion training specifically for women in construction, whether they are from large or small businesses. A motivational guest speaker will take over at 5pm, and there’ll be time for networking for those attending, finishing at 6.30pm. For more information or to reserve your spot contact Jo Duffy.

Spreading the safety message while fundraising It was a chance to raise funds as well as spread the Safety Charter message at the New Zealand Certified Builders first tradeshow last month. Libi Carr from the Charter ran a stall with Safe Rebuild – fielding plenty of health and safety questions from punters. Held at the Hornby Workingman’s Club it was more than just an opportunity for attendees to check out some great tools and services on offer from suppliers. Certified Builders ran an auction fundraising for Camp Quality, auctioning goods donated by suppliers and supporters. The charity provides programmes for around 300 children each year who have been diagnosed with cancer. The auction raised nearly $6000 – a fantastic result.
