SAFETY SPOTLIGHT • Harness the power of your whole team to assess and manage the risks of your business this New Year, says WorkSafe. • Have you had a chance to peruse WorkSafe’s new Good Practice Guidelines on Scaffolding in New Zealand – download them here. • NZTA has issued a safety alert on truck draw beams following a catastrophic incident in October last year. • Literacy can be a struggle for some people – now Pathways Awarua with the help of WorkSafe, has launched a new tool to improve health and safety at work by building literacy. Take a look now. • It can be pretty hot out there (although this summer has been a bit ‘patchy’)– make sure you and your teams are working to the conditions and are drinking plenty of water. Here’s our useful toolbox talk on fatigue which may come in handy. • Do you have M ori, Chinese, Tongan, Samoan or Hindi speaking workers on site? WorkSafe’s H&S workers’ rights and responsibilities factsheet is now available in these languages. Have a look here (Check out the right hand side of the page to download in each language). • The Charter is proud to join other construction industry trade organisations to bring you the inaugural Women in Construction training and networking day, hosted on International Women’s Day – 8 March 2017.

GRAHAM’S VIEW Welcome back! For many, you’ll have been back on the tools for weeks now – and the Christmas break may seem a long lost dream. As we enter 2017 we know it’ll be a big year for the Canterbury rebuild. While the peak of the rebuild may be slowing it sure doesn’t feel like that when we’re working around the city. In particular Commercial is in full swing this year. Add to that the work happening further north of here in Kaikoura and throughout North Canterbury. It’s fair to say our Charter has gone through some remarkable growth over the past three and a half years – we’re now up to 365 members. As a result the Steering Group has approved some changes to the way we work. The major one is to create one overall working group. Previously we’ve had three: • Leadership (Chaired by Rob Sloan of Enterprise Homes) • Performance (Chaired by Ian Campbell of SCIRT) • Communications (Chaired by Kristina Wischnowsky of Safe Rebuild). A lot of the work each of the groups was carrying out was starting to cross over – and it was time to streamline the approach. Therefore, one working group has been set up and is currently meeting monthly. They will report back to the Steering Group and also manage and carry out the work of the Charter. I’d really like to take the time to thank all of you who have been part of one of the previous three working groups. This is no mean feat. It will have taken hours of your time – away from your day-to-day job, as well as in some cases extra work that’s needed to be carried out in your own time. A big part of the Charter’s success is down to the passionate people involved in the working groups who have helped to drive the work of the Charter, so for that, I thank you.

CHARTER NEWS Wiremu Edmonds – a powerful and emotional presentation Our last Charter event of 2016 proved to be an emotional one for many, following the keynote presentation from Wiremu Edmonds. Mr Edmonds told his compelling story of his family’s health and safety journey – touching the hearts of many in the room. Near the end he asked the Charter’s Steering Group to stand, and pledge their promise to ‘Stand in the Gap’ for their teams to make sure health and safety is a priority in everything they do. Just some of the feedback we received from you all included: “What a roller-coaster of emotions we all went through with Wiremu’s korero...we ran from amused, quiet laughter to stunned silence….Wiremu’s analogy of how we feel between family and workmates brings home the differences we tend to establish between the safety of our whanau and the safety of whanau of the workplace.” “His powerful message was so on point….” “We were so moved by Wiremu’s presentation and wish all our staff in Christchurch could have heard it…” An extremely powerful presentation for the final event of 2016. Our next event is on 23 March 2017– so save the date. Invites will be with you all soon.

Your training and event info – let us know! We’ve been in touch with Charter members who are also H&S training providers seeking their upcoming training dates and information so we can add them to the online calendar. Keep sending them in. Even if you’re not a training provider, but are organising a big event, or involved with something H&S related that’s relevant to our signatories, let us know and we’ll add it online. We just need the: date

a brief description of the event

time

cost

location

RSVP/contact details.

It’s simple – and an easy way to let the whole Charter community know about your event.

Contractor pre-qualification questionnaire now live You may recall that last year we launched the new Government agency Health, Safety and Environment pre-qualification questionnaire. We’re now pleased to let you know that the questionnaire is now live on the Otakaro website – you can access it here. It was developed by government agencies to assess potential contractors’ H&S capability, help industry improve their safety performance and show leadership across the sector. It also creates a level playing field for all contractors, and aims to reduce your admin by just requiring you to fill in one form – and update it for each new job, rather than completing multiple forms. The form has 15 areas of focus – and closely aligns with the Charter and its commitments. You can listen to Ian Campbell from SCIRT talking about the questionnaire here at our August 2016 event. Government agencies have been using the questionnaire already. In particular, the Christchurch City Council found it’s use on a recent tender to be a real success. As a government agency or contractor let us know how you have used the questionnaire to support pre qualification.

Getting started for 2017 – Charter Orientation sessions In 2016 the Charter started running Orientation sessions, 2 hour introductions to the tools and resources of the Charter for new and current signatories run by the Charter Project Officer Libi Carr. These sessions proved very popular and we are running more in 2017. If you have health and safety responsibilities in your organisation this 2 hour session is a good way to get you started on using the Safety Charter to support improving health and safety within the business. If you have a service provider assisting you with health and safety in your organisation we would love to see them at a Charter Orientation session so we can work with them and you to improve health and safety in your business. We run the sessions with the support of Safe Rebuild Canterbury who support small – medium sized construction businesses in the rebuild. They provide resources and services to those businesses for free. Find out more about Safe Rebuild and their team here.

We have 2 sessions scheduled in February: Wednesday 15th February 0700 -0900 at Ara on Madras St

Tuesday 21st February 0700 -0900 at Ara on Madras St

Feedback from the orientation sessions 2016: “Love the website, the first time I have seen a tool that has such potential to give some really straightforward guidelines and ways to measure your performance in conjunction with the ability to make notes and put the information straight into a document to show what areas you can improve and what you need to do.” “This has been a great start and knowing there are plenty of resources available is a great relief.” “The tools are excellent and has raised some immediate action points – I am looking forward to completing the assessment and putting it into action.” “A very useful and productive couple of hours.” “I am more confident after discussing with other businesses and seeing that we are all in similar situations and levels.” To register for an Orientation session please email [email protected] Look forward to hearing from you!
