About The Awards The Government of Alberta presents the 2017 Child Development Professional Awards of Excellence. Excellent child development professionals contribute to excellence in child development, while making life better for families and supporting government’s commitment to quality, accessible and affordable child care. Albertans are encouraged to nominate professionals who work with programs licensed or approved by the Government of Alberta. Eligible programs include: parent link centres, early childhood development programs, day care programs, out-of-school care programs, family day home agencies/approved day home providers, preschool programs and approved early childhood services programs. Award recipients must demonstrate professional excellence in at least one of the following areas: Innovative Programming, Inclusionary Practices, Collaborative Partnerships, Leadership, Promising Practices, Family/Parent Support, Community Building, and Continuous Improvement.

4) Nominations that are incomplete or do not comply with these guidelines may be disqualified. The Government of Alberta takes no responsibility for incomplete, inaccurate, lost or late nominations. 5) Nominations cannot be submitted without the permission of the nominee. 6) By signing the nomination form, each nominee: > Agrees to follow the guidelines that govern the Child Development Professional Awards of Excellence; > Consents to having his or her photograph taken for awards-related publicity purposes; > Consents to the use of his or her name and nomination material in any awards-related publicity of Government of Alberta or other awards sponsors; > Consents to the release of his or her name and address to the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in his or her constituency; and > Consents to participating in award-related activities, including the Awards Ceremony, in the event that he or she is selected as an award recipient. 7) In accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, personal information related to the nominees and all nomination supporting material is collected for the sole purpose of administering the Child Development Professional Awards of Excellence. It will be used to select and publicize the achievements of award recipients.

The Child Development Professional Awards of Excellence will be administered according to the following guidelines. Nominators and nominees must comply with these guidelines, and will be considered to have read and understood the requirements if they participate in the awards nomination process.

8) Decisions made by the Awards Selection Committee

1) Award nominations can be made by individuals/parents/ teams/programs and must:

Nine award recipients are chosen by the Awards Selection Committee comprised of representatives from organizations dedicated to child development professional excellence and staff from the ministries of Children’s Services and Education. The Committee selects the nine award recipients according to criteria specified below.

> Live in Alberta; and > Not be a member of the Awards Selection Committee. 2) An individual, team or program that received an award in a previous year is not eligible to receive another award in the category in which they were the recipient. Only one nomination per individual, team or program will be accepted.

The Selection Process

All nominees and nominators will receive a letter confirming receipt of their nomination. Award recipients will be contacted after the Committee has completed the selection process.

Nomination Requirements

The awards celebrate child development professionals and their exceptional contributions in the following categories:

To be eligible, all nominations must include:

Individual (3 Awards):

2) Evidence of child care staff certification or post-secondary education for individual and team nominees (not required for program nominations);

A child development professional working with children in a program licensed or approved by the Government of Alberta Team (3 Awards): A team of two to four child development professionals working with children in a program licensed or approved by the Government of Alberta Program (3 Awards): A program licensed or approved by the Government of Alberta

Award Criteria

1) A completed nomination form;

3) A statement (500 words) prepared by the nominee or nominator providing evidence (specific explanation, examples, etc.) of professional excellence in at least one specific area of focus listed in the Award Criteria section. Photos and/or short videos may be used to highlight the nomination; and 4) A letter of support from a parent/guardian, colleague, community agency/organization, etc., explaining how the nominee meets the Award Criteria and why they should be considered for the award. (Only one letter of support per nomination will be considered.)

Nominees must demonstrate professional excellence in at least one of the following focus areas. > Innovative Programming (i.e. unique, creative ideas put into action) > Inclusionary Practices (i.e. special needs, cultural diversity) > Collaborative Partnerships (i.e. separate agencies working together) > Leadership (i.e. coaching, mentoring)

> Family/Parent Support (i.e. inclusive, family-oriented programming)

> Community Building (i.e. advancement of supports within community) > Continuous Improvement (i.e. professional development and training for staff is a priority)
