CHINA TRAVEL GUIDE

Where Your Journey Begins... GETTING AROUND Due to the sheer size of the country, flying is the quickest and most convenient way of covering large distances domestically. We also offer transport in the form of trains, private cars, coaches and cruise ships.

The Qinghai - Tibet railway takes you to the stunning plateaus of the Himalayas at an altitude of over 5000m above sea level and is the worlds highest train track.

TRAINS Domestic train travel in China is a wonderful way to see more of the countryside and scenery away from the big cities. Meet local Chinese travellers and experience the ever-changing countryside. To cover large distances, like Beijing to Xian or Xian to Shanghai, we normally suggest taking an overnight sleeper train. Private berths with 4 beds are available, saving on the cost of a flight or hotel. Shanghai has the Maglev train that whisks you from Pudong Airport to the city centre in about 8 minutes, reaching a top speed of over 400 km per hour. 6

TAXIS Taking a taxi is a comfortable, easy and secure way of getting around in cities, big and small. Prices vary from city to city but overall they offer good value. A good tip it to have your hotel write down your destination in Chinese for the driver to read.

BICYCLE No trip to China would be complete without a bicycle ride, after all they have the largest fleet in the world and is used as the main form of transport. It’s a fantastic way to get closer to the real China and a chance to meet some local people. Suggested cycle rides include Xian’s Ancient City Wall, which is a carfree zone and gives you a perfect view of the city. Yangshuo’s rice paddies and tranquil villages give a fascinating insight into rural life.

CRUISE Our small group tours and tailor-made journeys give you the chance to experience some truly wonderful river scenes, from the Yangtze River where we use the 5 Star fleet of Victoria Cruises and Sanctuary Explore, to the traditional fishing vessels of the farmers of the Li River near Guilin and Yangshuo. Explore the ancient canals of the Water Villages near Shanghai.

signs to subway maps. Some taxis carry a translation service and by dialling 1330, a bilingual operator will offer you detailed information on tourist sites and transportation in English.

TRAINS They are a comfortable way to travel around the country. Korea is rightly proud of its high speed KTX Korea Train eXpress - which connects major cities like Seoul, Busan and Daegu travelling at over 300 km/hr. MONEY The unit of currency is the Won. Notes come in denominations of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 50,000.

CUISINE Korean cuisine is becoming increasingly popular outside of Korea, especially in other parts of East Asia and the UK. Those unfamiliar with Korean cuisine will have to be wary for the many spicy and fermented dishes in Korean cuisine. Nevertheless, it is addictive once you get used to it and Korean food is definitely in a class of its own, mixing spicy chilies and copious amounts of garlic with delicate ingredients like raw fish, meat, rice and soup, invariably served with a vast assortment of side dishes known as banchan.

DESTINATION You will find Korean people to be extremely kind and friendly, if a little bewildered at the sight of foreigners sometimes! The tourist industry here is still very much in development, and as such, many Koreans have little or no experience with foreign tourists. English is not always widely spoken. However, this again adds to its charm and sets it apart from many other Asian travel destinations.
