CHINA: OVERVIEW AND OPPORTUNITIES Ever since initiating market reforms in 1978, China has shifted from a centrally-planned to a market-based economy and has experienced rapid economic and social development. GDP growth has averaged nearly 10% a year – the fastest sustained expansion by a major economy in history. Although China’s GDP growth has gradually slowed since 2012, it is still impressive by current global standards. With a population of 1.3 billion, China is the world’s second largest economy. It is increasingly playing an important and influential role in global economics, with the country being the largest contributor to world growth since the global financial crisis of 2008. This is further driven by the very rapid growth of the Chinese middle class, representing just 4% of the population in 2000 and on track to reach 70% by 2020. China presents many opportunities for UK businesses, including, but not limited to, those operating in technology, agriculture and medicine, alongside consumer brands. All these industry sectors have seized the opportunity and are making a success of China.

SUPPORT FOR COMPANIES DURING THE CLINIC Many western companies find great opportunities when selling to China but often get stuck. They often struggle with project fulfilment and operational roll-out because Chinese rules and business practices are very different. In particular, when companies export to China without the proper paperwork, import records, relevant certificates and other local requirements (which can vary between ports), businesses find themselves facing unwelcome and costly delays at best or deals falling through before the first sale is fulfilled at worst. The experts will be on hand to provide real, practical advice from their experience of working with companies of all shapes and sizes. They will help participants to understand the necessary elements in order to export smoothly and clear customs with ease.
ALEX PHILLIPS Alex is driven by his passion for supporting companies expand to China and has strong expertise in China market-entry strategy and best practice. Alex is an alumnus of Peking University Law School and practiced law before posts at the UK Foreign Office in Beijing and Department for International Trade in Guangzhou.
