CINEMA NOTES

Welcome to 2016! The new year sees another exciting line-up of international, homegrown and independent cinema.

SATANIC PANIC In the 1980s, it seemed impossible to escape Satan’s supposed influence. Everywhere you turned, there were warnings about a widespread evil conspiracy to indoctrinate the vulnerable through the media they consumed. This percolating cultural hysteria, now known as the “Satanic Panic,” not only sought to convince us of devils lurking behind the dials of our TVs and radios and the hellfire that awaited on book and video store shelves, it also created its own fascinating cultural legacy of Satan-battling VHS tapes, audio cassettes and literature. In conjunction with the publication of Satanic Panic: Pop-Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s, co-editor and author Kier-La Janisse makes her first appearance in Ireland to host a lecture on this controversial culture war on Wed 3rd February. The notorious ‘video nasty’ Evilspeak will also screen on the same evening.

EVILSPEAK NC

92 mins - United States 1982 - Dir: Eric Weston Starring: Clint Howard, R.G. Armstrong and Joe Cortese A bullied military academy student manages to tap into an ancient satanic ritual and unleash everything from flesh-hungry pigs to hearttearing demonic forces in this garish, gruesome rollercoaster ride. This former ‘video nasty’ will be presented in its uncensored glory! Kier-La Janisse is a film writer and programmer, the founder of The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies and owner/editor-in-chief of Spectacular Optical Publications. She has been a programmer for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. She has written for Filmmaker, Rue Morgue and Fangoria magazines, and is the author of A Violent Professional: The Films of Luciano Rossi and House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films. She is the co-editor (with Paul Corupe) of Spectacular Optical books Kid Power and Satanic Panic: Pop-Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s. The lecture will take place at 6.30pm on Wednesday 3rd February and will run for 75 minutes. There will be a break before Evilspeak, which will begin at 8.30pm. Tickets for the lecture and the film screening are €15 (€12.50 for Triskel Cinema members); Regular cinema ticket prices apply for film screening only. Copies of Satanic Panic: Pop-Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s will be available for purchase on the night.

Todd Haynes’ acclaimed and moving Carol will no doubt be nominated for multiple Academy Awards in February; Alejandro González Iñárritu follows Birdman with the brilliant The Revenant and the Cork-made Shem The Penman Sings Again receives a special screening to mark the 75th anniversary of James Joyce’s death. There are strong dramas from three talented female filmmakers: the powerful coming of age story My Skinny Sister (Min lilla syster) by Sanna Lenken, By The Sea is the second film from actor-turneddirector Angelina Jolie Pitt, and Kristina Grozeva co-directs (with Petar Valchanov) the wonderful Bulgarian picture The Lesson (Urok), which was one of the finest films screened at the 60th Cork Film Festival. We are also delighted to welcome Canadian writer Kier-La Janisse to Triskel Christchurch to host a lecture on the 80s cultural hysteria ‘Satanic Panic’, which will be followed by an uncensored screening of the notorious video nasty Evilspeak.
