Giving Back LOCALLY

this holiday season You don’t needfor a lot By Olivia Bevan, the to BIAbe able to give back this holiday season. Sometimes giving your time can be as meaningful as money. Here are just a few ideas. By Olivia Bevan, for the BIA

THE HOWE SOUND WOMEN’S CENTRE (HSWC) Established in 1981, the HSWC supports women, children and youth impacted by violence or abuse. They provide emergency transitional housing, support, resources, referrals and advocacy for women and children from Squamish to Pemberton. Each Christmas, the HSWC provides around 25 families in need with food and gift hampers, all of which are donations. To become a donor and be matched with a family please complete a form online at hswc.com or visit the Centre in person at 38021 Third Avenue. As a donor, grocery cards and department store cards are excellent gift choices, explains Megan Reynolds, Executive Director of HSWC, as they empower moms to pick out gifts for their family and create their own holiday dinner.

6

The HSWC’s annual Christmas party is another great opportunity to donate. Each child who attends receives a stocking, and donations of small stocking fillers are always welcome. Ideally, there should be 30 of each item, and gifts ought to be suitable for a range of ages and genders (such as a toiletries or chocolate treats). Please drop off all donations at the HSWC before December 1st. Or call ahead to check deadlines. Outside of Christmas, funds to support the drop-in centre and counselling programs are always welcome, and can be donated online or in person.

SQUAMISH FOOD BANK From seniors and families, to those on a low income or between jobs, the Squamish Food Bank can be a lifeline for those who need support – not just at Christmas time, but throughout the year.

DOWNTOWN SQUAMISH BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION

These are just a few of the many local causes that need support this Christmas. No matter how or how much you give, every little bit helps.

Typically, a Food Bank hamper lasts three days, explained Christina Rupp, Squamish Food Bank Manager, which can include fresh produce as well bread, dairy and non-perishable items. This is in addition to donations from the community such as soup, canned vegetables or fruit, peanut butter, beans, noodles, pasta and pasta sauce (which are always welcome). What really makes a difference though are monetary donations, explained Rupp, who’s able to triple the dollar value through deals and bulk buying. In December, the support that the Food Bank can provide is incredibly important, said Rupp. “A food hamper at Christmas time can put a smile on the face of someone who may not be able to afford much.” You can donate money at Save On Foods at the tills, simply by adding $2 or more to your grocery bill through the BC Sharing Coupons program, or online at squamishfoodbank. com. You can also set up monthly payments online, which can be a great gift to buy on someone else’s behalf this Christmas or as a Secret Santa.

The Squamish Food Bank is located at 39500 Government Road (opposite the Railway Heritage Park), open from 11:30 am until 1pm every first and third Wednesday of the month. Every second Wednesday is an extra day for families with children under 12 years of age (30% of individuals using the Food Bank are children).

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS CARE Community Christmas Care has been delivering hampers to local families and individuals in need for 35 years. Last year an incredible 450 hampers went out, each with enough to see someone right through the Christmas season. Even more remarkable is that all the contents (from non-perishable food to new toys, diapers and selfcare items) are donated by the community. Pastor Darcy Reimer helps lead the drive and explained the impact of receiving such a hamper is huge. “Some of these folks are in dire straights…in the midst of a bleak time this hamper brings a bit of reprieve and hope.”

None of this could happen without the community. Donations are essential, as are volunteers to help pack and deliver the hampers, especially between December 5th and 15th. For children who want to be involved, Mountain FM organizes a huge donation drive at McDonald’s on December 6th, between 6am and 10am. Kids often show up on their way to school or sometimes whole classes turn up, said Pastor Reimer. Businesses too are encouraged to take part. For example, in the past, some have encouraged their Christmas party guests to bring a donation with them. For details on where to donate, how to volunteer or to receive a hamper visit communitychristmascare.com.

SHOP LOCALLY Local businesses support local causes, so by spending your dollars here in Squamish, you’re empowering local stores to give more.

Waste Not

Tips to reduce, reuse and recycle this Christmas.

WANT NOT By Olivia Bevan, for the BIA

During the holiday season, even the most frugal household is likely to create more waste than usual. In Squamish alone we created an extra 35 tonnes of curbside waste in December last year. Here are a few tips on how to minimize the festive aftermath.

GET CRAFTY WITH CARD SCRAPS Recycling Christmas cards is great, but there are other uses too. You can pull out last year’s cards (and be sure to save this year’s cards for future repurposing) and cut out the picture on the front, insert a hole in the top, attach some ribbon and you’ve a beautiful gift tag. Kids love to craft with last year’s cards. Help them make new Christmas

cards for this year by cutting the pictures and gluing them to folded pieces of craft paper. Add a bit of ribbon and some sparkle glue for that extra touch. For cards that arrive in the mail, before recycling the envelope cut out the stamp and keep it to one side to send to charities such as The Land Conservancy (conservancy.bc.ca). TOP TIP: Did you know you can also make a cute gift box out of a greeting card? A quick search online will reveal plenty of great tutorials how.

DOWNTOWN SQUAMISH BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION

9

TOILET ROLLS More guests mean more toilet paper! Don’t ditch the tubes though. There are so many great everyday craft uses from creating hot rods to binoculars. TOP TIP: There are even tutorials online to transform your leftover tubes into cute vintage-style gift boxes.

MAKE IT A WRAP Before automatically recycling your wrapping paper, there are many ways to reuse it. If you’re the creative type, hold on to it for paper machè projects, scrapbooking, covering text books, making bookmarks or practising origami. You can also make lovely gift bows using simple tutorials online. Even Martha Stewart is getting in on the action and suggests adding a little glitz to your gathering by serving up drinks on trays lined with reused metallic paper. For more practical types, cut pieces into uniform sizes, attach together and use the reverse side as a scrap paper notepad. Or simply reuse it as gift wrapping once more. TOP TIP: try shredding the paper to use as colouring filling for packages or future gifts.

DON’T DITCH LEFTOVERS

This article was sponsored by

From Christmas cake to cranberry sauce, nearly all our uneaten food can be frozen for later. Rather than leaving leftovers languishing beyond their best in the fridge, freezing helps lock in both freshness and nutrition (just be sure to follow FoodSafe guidelines when freezing, defrosting and reheating). Leading up to Christmas, forage through your freezer and eat what you can to make room for the festive influx. Making space now

10

DOWNTOWN SQUAMISH BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION

also enables you to stock up on the basics such as milk (which can be frozen for up to one month), bread and cheese. Even roast potatoes can be prepared in advance: cut and par-boil the potatoes, leave them to cool, freeze them flat, then store in a freezer bag to save on space. For crunchy, fluffy potatoes on Christmas day you can roast them from frozen – simply sprinkle with cooking oil, season and let the oven do the rest. Alternatively, leftovers are an opportunity to be creative in the kitchen. Meat can be made into curries or stews, and vegetables into soups for cold days. It doesn’t have to be two weeks of cold turkey sandwiches. If you have a compost bin it goes without saying to make the most of it. Better yet, make sure you only buy the food you need this Christmas to minimize any waste. TOP TIP: don’t forget to use your reusable bags when shopping to avoid carrier bags.

TAKING STOCK Any meat bones from turkey or ham will make a great stock, as will vegetable scraps and peelings (just stay away from bitter Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower). Unlike meat stock, vegetable broth doesn’t need to be on the stove for hours and there’s no fat to skim off. TOP TIP: start collecting and freezing scraps now to bump up your broth.

GREATER THAN A GIFT Instead of buying gifts with lots of packaging, consider purchasing an ‘experience’, or organizing a day out for that person. Alternatively, give a charitable gift and help someone in need, or donate locally (Squamish Food Bank or Christmas Care for example) on someone else’s behalf.

TOP TIP: If you’re skilled in a particular area, you could offer your time as a gift.

RECYCLE YOUR TREE Recycling real Christmas trees is as easy as filling your Organics tote – just be sure to take off the decorations first! If including your tree in the curbside collection, chop off all the branches, cut the trunk to no longer than 3ft and no wider than 3”, and place in your Organics tote making sure the lid closes and locks. Trees can also be brought to the Squamish Landfill for composting, though yard waste fees apply. Alternatively, Squamish Scouts offer a by-donation tree chipping services at Canadian Tire. TOP TIP: If you buy a real Christmas tree with roots, replant it after Christmas to re-use next year

OTHER SUGGESTIONS Decorate your tree with pine cones or purchase quality decorations that needn’t be replaced as often. Planning your meal ahead this Christmas will cut down on food waste significantly. Purchase rechargeable batteries for battery-operated toys to save on future waste. Go paperfree this Christmas and send e-cards. Christmas time can be hectic but minimizing waste needn’t be hard work.

FUN PARTY GAMES FOR EVERYONE For an even merrier Christmas this year, try adding a few party games to your gathering. Whether you’re with family, friends or colleagues, there’s an activity for everyone. The only downside is that with so much fun and festivity, your guests might not want to leave!

By Olivia Bevan, for the BIA

GUESS THE NUMBER OF ORNAMENTS Quiet game for everyone

Fill a large, clear container with colourful ornaments of varying sizes and have guests write down their guess on a piece of paper. Be sure to use enough ornaments to make it difficult to guess and have a prize for whoever is closest.

GUESS THE OBJECTS IN THE STOCKINGS Brain boggler for all ages

This is a great game for guests to play in their own time. Take three large stockings and hide an odd-shaped object in each. Seal each one, lay them on a table and have guests guess what is inside each by feel alone. Ask them to write down their answers and award prizes for the winners.

HUMAN CHRISTMAS TREE Active, exciting game for a mix of ages

With the party host as referee, the guests split up into teams (four or more is best). Each team has a box of Christmas decorations (e.g. wrapping paper, tinsel, tape and baubles) and nominates one person to be their ‘tree’. When the referee starts the time, each team has just two frantic, fun-filled minutes to decorate their human tree. When the time is up, the team with the best-looking tree wins. Party games can be an easy and inexpensive way to share even more seasonal fun and festivity. From the young to the old, everyone can feel included.

FESTIVE CHARADES

Competitive, fun game for most ages (you may want to tailor the clues to the age) Before the party begins, write down Christmas-themed clues (books/films/TV shows/song titles) on pieces of paper, fold them up and place them in a small box or container. The first charade actor picks out a clue and begins to act it out in front of the group without speaking. The person who guesses correctly is the next to choose a clue from the box and take a turn acting it out. Use ‘sounds like’, and indicate the number of syllables and words for particularly difficult clues. This game can be played as individuals or teams.

THE CHOCOLATE GAME

continue until the next person rolls a six, who then races in, puts on the winter woollies and takes their place. The game continues in this way until all the chocolate bar is eaten.

MUSICAL CHAIRS

Active game for most ages Using one less chair than the number of players, set out two rows of chairs, back-to-back (place them very close together so they are almost touching). Ask guests to form a circle around the chairs and have some music ready. When the music plays the guests walk in a circle around the chairs, and when the music stops each guest must race to sit on a chair. The player left standing is out. Remove a chair each round and keep playing until you have a winner.

PIN THE RED NOSE ON RUDOLPH

Hysterical, frantic game for most ages Before the party, buy a big bar of chocolate, wrap it up like a gift and put it in the fridge for at least a couple of hours. To set up the game, place the chocolate bar in the centre of a room along with a knife, fork, scarf, hat and pair of mittens. Guests sit in a circle around the chocolate bar and take it in turns to roll a dice. If someone rolls a six, they race to centre, place on the hat, gloves and scarf as fast as they can, and start removing layers of paper and eating the chocolate bar using only the knife and fork. They

Especially popular with children Place a picture of a Rudolph with a missing nose on a wall. Guests take it in turns to be blindfolded, spun around and given a sticky nose to try and pin on. The person who gets the nose closest to the right position wins a prize.

CHRISTMAS CRACKER

Once you’ve glittered your pinecones, you can fill a jar for a festive table centerpiece, create trims for your tree, or ‘plant’ them in tiny painted pots.

The Christmas cracker is a fun tradition in many houses—often alongside the holiday family meal. Homemade ones can be filled with special treats and, if not snapped during dinner, can be hung on the tree or given to friends.

GLITTERY PINECONE IDEAS Tree trims – Wrap a pipe cleaner around the top of the cone and form the end into a hook, ready for hanging on the tree. If using ribbon or yarn, simply tie the ends together to form a loop. Pinecone tree – At the dollar store, purchse tiny clay plant pots. Bring them home and have your child paint them with red and white paint, then affix your pinecone tree in the pot. Centrepiece – pile the cones up in a nice glass jar to display in your home.
