VIETNAM - DISCOVER SOUTH EAST ASIA’S BEST KEPT SECRET WITH KARMA

Hoi An, Vietnam

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

KARMA - A HARDY PERENNIAL

O

rganic is a word we like to use when describing the way the Karma Group has developed over the years. Wholly owned and debt free, our global growth has been driven by a passion for new destinations, new experiences and the enjoyment of the finer things in life. But if our global expansion has always been organic, it has also been fast not unlike the turbo-charged growth of the bamboo plants that feature in many of our resorts. 2016 has been no exception. The most recent edition to the Karma collection is Karma Cây Tre, a tranquil retreat in Vietnam’s cultural heartland. Vietnam has long been on our radar as a potential Karma destination, with its fascinating history, world famous culinary offerings and iconic landscapes - think precipitous peaks drenched in jungle, palm fringed beaches and stepped rice paddies. Now we invite you to experience it yourself. A world away but no less engrossing is Carcassonne, a world heritage treasure

in the heart of the French countryside. This is the location for a brand new Karma property that is on the cusp of opening...more will be revealed very soon. They say a picture speaks a thousand words - so we thought the best way to present you our unique variety of destination experiences in Asia and Europe was with a collage - we hope these images will inspire you to think about your next holiday, be it holiday season among the snowy peaks of the Bavarian Alps or the aquamarine waters of Indonesia! Featured inside an exhilarating new project for all our members and one that’s particularly close to my heart. Some of you may know that I started out in pop music, trying my hand at managing. I’ve maintained many of my contacts in the industry and in a happy marriage of hospitality and rock n roll, Karma is embarking on a brand new project with the Sanctum Hotel Group, run by my old friend John Fuller.

We’re planning to open a collection of rock themed hotels around the world bringing an exciting new dimension to the Karma Royal portfolio. We love to bring our members exclusives, and one of the ways we do this is through invitations and offers for special events, gatherings and parties. For example, we recently took on the exclusive Stokes & Moncreiff Bar & Club - a favourite haunt of Rugby legends past and present. We have special packages to watch England v Australia and England v South Africa in November and December. Read a member’s account of the England v Ireland match on page 8 and if you’d like to head to Twickenham in November, just contact your Karma Concierge. We wrap up with more event reviews, guest testimonials, giving you the most important perspective on Karma - the one from you, the members. It’s been another stellar year for Karma I’d like to thank the Karma family around

the globe - our loyal and dedicated staff, you our members and guests and our many close collaborators. May your end of year be filled with new places, new friends and new experiences.

LATEST ADDITION: KARMA OPENS EXCITING NEW PROPERTY IN VIETNAM

K

arma Cây Tre, the latest stunning addition to the acclaimed Karma collection of resorts is located in Vietnam’s cultural heartland in the historic town of Hoi An, part of a narrow stretch of coastline sandwiched between Cambodia and the South China Sea that plays host to some of the country’s most famous landmarks. Meanwhile the whole region is a tapestry of picture perfect beaches, ancient temples and rolling countryside with endless delights to stumble upon. Karma Cây Tre itself is a tranquil riverside retreat offering spacious suites set in expansive tropical gardens. The resort boasts a lap pool and restaurant serving both local and international cuisine.

H

oi An itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its historically important architecture that dates from the 15th to 19th century with local, Chinese and colonial French influences. Its culinary offerings are also not to be missed for they include a huge variety of dishes with both Vietnamese and Chinese influences – from classics such as Goi Cuon spring rolls to crunchy fried crab cakes to delicious black sesame pudding and the local specialty Cao Lao – a delicious medley of noodles and vegetables in rich pork broth.

Come discover South East Asia’s most exciting up and coming destination from one of the country’s finest resorts. Staying at Karma Resort Ca Tre in Hoi An made me feel like a princess. A warm welcome awaited my arrival.A breakfast to delight the tastebuds. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The units are set in a beautiful setting of tropical palms along the river. You could choose to do as little or for the adventurous, staff would outline a number of local attractions you could enjoy. The Ancient City of Hoi An and markets were all an easy pushbike ride away. Overall I would highly recommend this Karma Resort for a very enjoyable holiday. Cheers,

Dear Ms. Pradnyani First of all, I would like to thanks all of the staff and manager of Karma Cay Tree Vietnam that we had one week holiday on mid September. We (me and my wife) had a great and relaxing holiday in Hoi An. We hv tried a lot of local food that was very delicious and tasty. Hoi an is a ancient town so if you come to this town you feel like the time was turning back about a century ago.. this city is a must visit place. Danang instead had a very nice beach along the street to Hoi An so you can choose either public beach such as An Bang beach (very nice white sand beach) or private beach.. Here are some of our pictures in Danang n Hoi An..

We would like to thank the company Karma Royal Group for the opportunity to have holidays in Vietnam! It was pleasure for us enjoying our apartment and area of the hotel. Everything is very clean and beautiful. The staff is always ready to help. Very sympathetic and good-natured people. Thanks to the company for the transfer. Special thanks for organizing a free trip to Cham island. My wife and I got a lot of unforgettable experiences. Many thanks for our unbelievable and unforgettable vacation! ODYSSEY BRINGS YOU EVEN MORE OF CRETE

C

rete has proved to be a hugely popular destination with members - which is hardly surprising, what with its unique position in classical history as one

of the foundations of western culture and civilization, not to mention its seeminly numberless picture postcard beaches and the extraordinary beauty of so much of the landscape. So we’re excited to announce that we’ll soon be opening our second property on the island, this time in Agios Nikolaos. The new property will introduce members to a slightly different side of the island - less remote with access to both modern and ancient aspects of Crete, sophistictated cuisine, boutique shopping and entertainment.

2016

has been a momentous year as we’ve expanded into one of the most exciting destinations in Southeast Asia - vietnam. Soon we

will be consolidating our offerings in this part of the world with a brand new resort in the country’s equally fascinating neighbour Cambodia. Closed to outsiders for many years, Cambodia is gradually opening up - so you get the best of both worlds, with a steady increase in tourism infrastructure but a real sense of untouched beauty. Cambodia is of course home to one of the world’s most legendary ruined kingdoms- Angkor Wat - a must do for any visitors to the country - but still just one aspect of a country richly endowed with history, culture and natural beauty.

SRI LANKA’S ON OUR RADAR

W

hen it comes to destination highlights, the little island nation of Sri Lanka punches well above its weight - which is why it’s very much on our radar.

It packs a whole lot of diversity into its 25,000 square miles - from tropical rainforests where tigers and elephants roam to dusty plains to great expanses of sugary white sand beaches - many of them perfect for surfing. Add to that a host of ancient cities and citadels, some dating back more than two millennia, a rich colonial history that’s visible in the architecture plus a boutique tourism indusry that’s gradually taking root and you’ll probably agree that Sri Lanka should be on your radar too!

Six Nations - England Vs Ireland 2016

O

ur weekend kicked off in style, walking into the open planned lobby of the Novotel Hotel in Brentford, greeted by a very nice front desk manager who directed us to our room. This was, I have to say a very pleasant surprise, with built in TV and audio surround that could be linked to your phones and pads with ease, large comfy king size bed and a very nice bathroom with a gadget for the gents to play with turning the clear glass to misted glass in the shower room! Our Itinerary was waiting for us from the Karma Club Concierge team and it filled us with surprise and excitement.

smile on my face apart from the champagne was the pick n mix on the way to the match, nice little touch! A short brisk walk to Twickenham stadium, found our seats and the game started, seats were very good and the game not bad either, I’m English and my husband Irish, I will let you draw your own conclusions, but lets just say it was interesting to say the least! Back to Stokes and Moncreiff’s for a final drink and our chariots awaited to return us to

The 1st night we were met downstairs by Jos, Andy, Pippa and Steve (Karma) and then a couple more guests joined us for drinks and the evening meal. We had a lovely evening talking about everything and nothing and of course covering our thoughts on the game eagerly awaited by all. The food in the hotel was excellent, looking round the table the majority of us had the steak which was cooked to our liking and our hosts looked after us very well making sure there were no dry glasses. Breakfast is included in the deal and this was an excellent array of cold and hot food, something for everyone. Midday and the taxis were waiting outside to take us to Stokes and Moncreiff for the pre-match lunch. The start to our afternoon was great in atmosphere with talks from rugby players and a referee, autographs being signed, food and drink all included which was excellent and not being overly crowded allowing you to mingle and talk without being crushed. The thing that put a 8 www.odysseypremier.com |

the hotel. For us though the evening continued, we had lots to discuss and after spending a day and a night in such good company it would be a shame to retire to bed so early. The whole weekend we were all very much looked after and even when we did speak about the Karma Club there was no pressure or over the top sales spill, they respected we were on a very special weekend and were available to us as little or as much as you wanted. However the small chat we did have about the new concepts that the Karma group are moving into is very inspiring and we are looking forward to seeing what John Spence comes up with next, it will only get better as he has great vision. Oh I forgot to mention, he is a lovely chap, see photo of my husband and John Spence in Stokes and Moncreiff. Thank you all, Pippa for arranging the event, you did a great job and its not easy to please everyone, Jos and Andy, was lovely to meet you both and keeping us up to date and answering our questions and Steve for making sure we were all good and filling in any gaps. Great weekend and we will look forward to next year and becoming a fractional owner…. Kind regards, Mr. and Mrs. McGrath Members Since 2009

MEMBER TESTIMONIALS

Dear Odyssey,

more than one occasion!

We wanted to write and tell you about our most amazing holiday week at your Ultiqa @ Village Resort in Port Macquarie, NSW Australia.

Our accommodation was in a villa which was roomy, clean and freshly refurbished with all the mod cons.

We enjoyed the break with our extended family so we were a big family group with ages ranging from 4 to 70 years of age! We all had the best time!

We can’t recommend Port Macquarie enough to other members looking for a beautiful place to stay in Australia and we will certainly do our best to return again next year. Thank you, Odyssey for yet another beautiful holiday.

The resort had everything an active family could dream of: A boating lake with canoes (for Dad), a crazy golf course (for the children), tennis courts, a table tennis room, and a large indoor swimming pool with jacuzzi (to relieve those aching muscles after running around with the children all day!)

And no Australian holiday would be complete without the obligatory Aussie BBQ which we put to good use on

Our wonderful holiday in Goa Haathi Mahaal Several years ago we came for the first time to Goa – Haathi Mahaal and we enjoyed it. It was always on our ‘ To Do ‘ list, to go back there. Last year we booked and this January 2016, on a cold Monday morning, we boarded the plane in Brussels to Mumbai and on to Goa. Goa here we come...............After we landed in Goa airport, a friendly taxi driver came to pick us up ( all organized by staff from the resort ), and an hour later we were at our destination. From the entrance gate to the lobby and reception area, it all looked very clean and welcoming ( just as we remembered from last time ) We were welcomed by friendly ladies at the reception desk , who told us that our villa was not ready yet ( it was only 08.00 am ), but they would do their outmost best to accommodate us as soon as possible.

No problem, we might as well start our holiday right here and now, enjoy the sun, a cool drink by the pool, a light lunch....Belgium was far from our mind, this was heaven, sun , sun , and more sun. ( Only those who come from the Northern hemisphere can understand this feeling of bliss, having sun and No grey skies and rain..) Just after lunch we were shown to our villa that was once again clean and well situated. On our first Sunday evening there was ‘ Carvery ‘ in the restaurant, nice food, a lot to choose from, friendly waiters and nice people whom we met already at the pool the day before. From the first day we felt right away at home again. The ‘ theme ‘ evenings at the Restaurant were excellent - The Goan evening, superb food with typical Goan flavours. The Carnival evening most enjoyable and fun. And to top it all, these ‘ Theme ‘ evening had a excellent live band playing music to everyone’s liking. The day that we didn’t feel like staying in the resort, a short walk to the beach and we could enjoy the warm water of the Arabian Sea, or go for a long walk at the beach. To sum all this up, we had a wonderful 2 weeks, But one thing we will never

Hi Evi I would like to let you know what a great holiday we had in Schliersee. I made a few notes every day so i could remember and pass on any trips and thoughts for anyone thinking about going. We had a great journey to Munich airport and picked up a rental car which came in very useful. The driving was easy, very straight forward with excellent roads. We brought our own sat nav but you could hire this easily. We had a warm welcome when we arrived and were able to check in as soon as we turned up. The chalet was very with spacious two rooms (very comfortable beds) and two bathroom i but a very small kitchen. There are lots of supermarkets nearby for provisions in a very picturesque town of Schliersee. We also took note of previous

travelers and took a box set with us as there were only news programs in English. The weather was a bit drizzly when we arrived but we could appreciate the mountains surrounding Schliersee. The weather was beautifully sunny and clear for the rest of our stay – not bad for March. We enjoyed happy hour every day and were looked after by the barman Peter. We met Andy the karma rep who was very informative. We spent some time in the club house playing old vinyl records and chatting to others. Dear Odyssey My husband and I enjoyed two weeks holiday, one week at the Royal Bella Vista in Chiang Mai and another at the Royal Lighthouse Phuket. We arrived in Chiang Mai after having spent a few days in Bangkok. After the hustle and bustle of Bangkok the calming atmosphere of Chiang Mai was a welcome change. Our accommodation was room 316 on the third floor which had a very nice view of the fields and mountains in the distance. Being on the end of the level there was a spacious balcony to enjoy the early morning coolness and an evening drink after the sun had gone down. We took advantage of the onsite restaurant and were lucky enough to have had some enjoyable meals. For an alternative dining experience we went to a local restaurant, The 360, picks up and drops guests off free of change. We enjoyed a couple of very enjoyable evening meals at this restaurant which was well priced, pleasant staff and very tasty food. Our early morning walk always included a stop at The Doi for a very enjoyable latte. This is a super place for “real coffee” and has a pleasant outlook. The grounds are extremely well cared for and pleasant to stroll about. Just 300 meters uphill from the entry we

enjoyed seeing local elephants with their handlers as they arrived for their morning exercise. We were welcome among the herd of elephants and able to pat and feed them. We enjoyed a day trip to the Golden Triangle, which was arranged through the Karma staff onsite. This trip is highly recommended and made even more enjoyable with only 6 in our group. Our second week was spent in a spacious 2 bedroom villa at the Royal Lighthouse resort. We enjoyed the marina life very much. The villa was well equipped with well kept. The location of the Royal Lighthouse villas, away from the popular beachside resorts, did not concern us as transport was readily available so a day out at the beach was easily arranged.

location, surrounded by luxury boats and has plenty of choices for dining. Everything you want to do in and around Phuket or Chiang Mai (tours, transport, dining …) can be arranged through the very efficient Karma staff. Good afternoon We stayed at the Royal Sanur hotel in March on a family holiday. It was our first Karma experience and an amazing one. We were very fortunate that the hotel were able to accommodate not only ourselves and the kids but also my mother and sister in law, making it a great family catch up (as they live in Adelaide). The staff, from airport pickup to the room cleaners were all very kind and respectful. They were very attentive and helped us with every request, - including changing rooms on day 2 as my mother in law couldn’t handle all the steps to the top floor - organizing a private buffet dinner for my sister in laws 40th complete with the best rendition of Happy Birthday, - and letting my son who was sick lay down in Spa room after we had checked out of room, whilst we had lunch. It was great to meet other members and speak to Dan on how to use our membership well. We ate a lot in the hotel restaurant and also got room service. The pancakes at breakfast were very popular.

The kids loved the pool and spent a lot of time playing it and were never made feel like they were too noisy or not welcomed. We loved the treatments in the spa and visited them a couple of times. We booked a tour thru UBUD and had Adi as our driver, he was FANTASTIC. Very knowledgeable and such a friendly guy, he was so good we booked him again for NUSA DUA. We had such a great time with Karma Royal and loved how we felt like family. Planning another trip very soon Attached a photo of the private dinner set up by staff for birthday, kids and my mother in law feeling very relaxed.
