Explanation of Art Window Covering Moving in Sync With help from congregation members, artists Barb Knuckles, Elyce Elder, and Kathryn Dart created fabric panels with flocks of waxed paper airplanes to represent the movement of the Holy Spirit. Banners and Platform Installation Broken, Beauty, Community The great thing about homemade paper is that you cannot see the faults at a distance. Up close, however, is a different story: there are air bubbles; the circles have craggy, jagged edges; there are places where we made the banners three or four sheets thick to cover thin, breaking spots. So, too, with how we try to live our lives. We want to look great from a distance, but up close, we know we too are craggy and jagged and try to cover over the places where we are too thin. We are broken. The imperfect circles represent community – small, medium, large – like families, like people. Like a church body. It took a community to have enough paper to make these banners. The source materials included Redeemer worship guides, old letterhead from The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation, as well as library branch activity calendars, paper from a mother and son’s scrapbooking projects, and more. The sections of each banner are bound together with burlap ribbons, just as we as a community are bound together through Christ and God’s love for us. But it is with all our brokenness in community that we exhibit beauty. ~~~Hidi Gardner and Bethany Warner Bulletin Cover Art The image you see is a close up of hundreds of hand-woven threads that comprise one of five large commissioned art pieces I have been feverishly working to complete for weeks after months of client meetings to obtain final approval. Like much of my work this past year, the making of these pieces has been methodical, time intensive and also meditative in process. Most of my newest work would be completely disastrous if hours of time and planning were not put into the structure and planning before even beginning to do “the work.” I see faith to be just like this. Seeking Jesus, being reminded, knowing that He is the cornerstone of everything I/we do as we live out our calling is essential to my faith. The cornerstone must be laid to support the rest of the structure. God is that cornerstone and so much more. These string installations have become quite a metaphor for me. They have exhausted me. They have forced me to seek out help and support. They are so big I am constantly reminded that I CANNOT do it alone. I need others. A whole community of people has come to my aid and offered me salvation. This, as it turns out, is a beautiful and practical metaphor as we all walk together in faith as a church body on Sunday and throughout the week. We are meant to be the embodiment of our Lord, walking with others, loving, caring and supporting. ~~~Quincy Owens

Opening Hymn “The Lord is King” All

The Lord is King! Lift up your voice, O earth and all ye heav’ns, rejoice! From world to world, the joy shall ring, “The Lord omnipotent is King!” Sing his praise, sing his praise, Lord of lords, Ancient of Days; Sing his praise, sing his praise, All your days, all your days. The Lord is King! Who then shall dare Resist his will, distrust his care, Or murmur at his wise decrees, Or doubt his royal promises? Sing his praise, sing his praise, Lord of lords, Ancient of Days; Sing his praise, sing his praise, All your days, all your days. The Lord is King! Bow down you must; The Judge of all the earth is just; Holy and true are all his ways; Let every creature sing his praise. Sing his praise, sing his praise, Lord of lords, Ancient of Days; Sing his praise, sing his praise, All your days, all your days. Sing his praise, sing his praise, Lord of lords, Ancient of Days; Sing his praise, sing his praise, All your days, all your days. words Josiah Conder, 1824; music Nathan Partain, 2003

Prayer of Adoration 2

Prayer of Confession Based on Luke 18:10–14 Leader

“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’” “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.

Song of Confession Come Ye Sinners All

Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, Weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus, ready, stands to save you, Full of pity, love, and power. Come ye thirsty, come, and welcome, God’s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, Every grace that brings you nigh. Come, ye weary, heavy laden, Lost and ruined by the fall; If you tarry ’til you’re better, You will never come at all.

Assurance of Pardon in the Gospel Based on Psalm 130 Leader

If you have confessed your sins in Jesus name you are forgiven.

People

Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

Leader People

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed your transgressions from you.

Leader People

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;

Song of Confession Come Ye Sinners All

I will arise and go to Jesus, he will embrace me in his arms; In the arms of my dear savior, O, there are ten thousand charms. In the arms of my dear savior, O, there are ten thousand charms.

Song of Thanksgiving “There is a Fountain” All

There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Emmanuel’s veins, And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains; Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains, And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains. The dying thief rejoiced to see, that fountain in his day, And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away; Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away, And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away. E’er since by faith I saw the stream, thy flowing wounds supply, Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die; And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die, Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die. Dear dying Lamb, thy precious blood, shall never lose its pow’r, Till all the ransomed church of God, be saved to sin no more; Be saved to sin no more, be saved to sin no more, Till all the ransomed church of God, be saved to sin no more. When this poor lisping, stamm’ring tongue lies silent in the grave, Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I’ll sing thy pow’r to save; I’ll sing thy pow’r to save, I’ll sing thy pow’r to save, Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I’ll sing thy pow’r to save. words William Cowper, 1771; music Lowell Mason, 1830; Public Domain

Scripture Philippians 4:10–20

Reader

I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me. 10

Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. 18 I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. 19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen. 14

Money Between Friends

Community Group Questions 1) Jesus offers us a way to diagnose the heart in Matthew 6:21 when he tells us, “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” As you look at our society, where could you say our heart is, based on where our treasure is? 2) What parallels do you see between Philippians 1:9–11 and 4:17–20? What does that say about the connection between giving and growing in our faith? 3) What could it look like for you to trust Jesus to empower you for the circumstances he’s called you into right now? 4) What about generous giving for the gospel scares us? How do God’s promises in Philippians 4:13, 19 and the fruit of partnership in 4:17–18 speak to our hearts to free us up to partner in giving? Children’s Questions What we do with our money matters not just once you become an adult, but when you’re a kid too. Jesus promises that he’s enough for us so that we can give for his gospel to grow. How can you trust Jesus to be enough for you so that you don’t trust in money? How can you consider giving so that more people can know Jesus too?

Song of Response “Jesus Thy Boundless Love to Me” All

Jesus, Thy boundless love to me, No thought can reach, no tongue declare; Unite my thankful heart with Thee, And reign without a rival there. To Thee alone, dear Lord, I live; Myself to Thee, dear Lord, I give. Myself to Thee, dear Lord, I give. O, grant that nothing in my soul, May dwell but Thy pure love alone! Oh, may Thy love possess me whole, My joy, my treasure, and my crown! All coldness from my heart remove; My every act, word, thought, be love. My every act, word, thought, be love. This love unwearied I pursue, And dauntlessly to Thee aspire. Oh, may Thy love my hope renew, Burn in my soul like heavenly fire! And day and night be all my care, To guard this sacred treasure there. To guard this sacred treasure there. O that I, as a little child, May follow Thee, and never rest Till sweetly Thou hast breathed Thy mild, And lowly mind into my breast! Nor ever may we parted be, Till I become as one with Thee. Till I become as one with Thee. Paul Gerhardt, 1653, translated from German to English by John Wesley, 1739; Nathan Partain, 2011

Call to Communion and Prayer Guidelines for the Reception of Communion Redeemer welcomes all Christians who are willing to forsake their sin and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation and who are members of congregations which proclaim the gospel to receive Communion with us. We will be coming forward for the distribution of Communion. Please eat the bread privately, and then drink the cup together with us after everyone has returned to their seats. Clear cups (located in the interior rings) contain grape juice. Red cups (exterior ring of tray) contain wine. Children who have been examined by the elders and admitted to the Lord’s Table are able to partake of Communion. The ministry of prayer is one of the ways we live together as a community of believers and seekers. During Communion, members of our prayer team are available at the front of the sanctuary. It would be our privilege to pray with you as we walk together through the joys and struggles of life. We also encourage you to pray with one another in the pews during this time of movement in our service.

Prayers Prayer for Guidance to Truth God, I don’t know how I feel about what I have heard today but I want to trust that you are good, that you are loving and that you are just. I want to know if you are the true God. If you are there would you guide my soul to the truest truth. I don’t want to be tricked or believe a lie. I don’t want to believe in something just to make me feel better. Please God, lead me to the truth. Prayer of Belief and Repentance Jesus, I believe that you are who you say you are: the Son of God and the savior of broken people like me. I need forgiveness. I need to be made new and to start over again. I now turn away from all I have been doing. I turn away from my self-centered life. I turn my whole heart toward you. I believe that when you were crucified, you took all of my evil and somehow you gave me all of your beauty. I invite your Holy Spirit to live in me. I do not want to live for myself any more. I want you to lead my life. I want to know you and to receive your love for me. Please teach me and protect me and guide me. I am yours. I ask these things in the name of Jesus. Amen. Prayer of Doubt and Faith God, I don’t really believe all of this but there is a part of my heart that knows there is truth and goodness here. I am confused by the fact that there are so many things that I don’t understand or that make me angry about you. There are also so many things that fill my heart with hope and many things that draw me to you and I want to put my trust in you. God, you say I can come to you and ask for anything so if you are real, please give me the faith I need to believe. Give me the desire to continue to seek after you. Keep my heart from self-deception. Protect me from any evil misleading or binding spirits. Calm my fears. Soften my cynicism. Be patient with me and if you are God, please don’t let me go but instead let me know that you are real. I have a little faith, help me in my doubt.

Song of Celebration “Deliverance is a Song of Peace” Ensemble

Deliverance is a song of peace, Untying the tongue in the laugh of a child. Only one touch can calm the soul, The gentle Restorer who sets free to be known. He sets free to be known. Resurrection releases until death comes undone, In the fire of His favor, in the passion of his love. There’s a rush and there’s a current, from the graces of his blood, That pulls you deep into the healing affections of the triune God. Forgiveness is a tender kiss, A water of gladness you can cup in your hands. No burden, no weapon remains, But freedom will flourish where blessing commands. Freedom where blessing commands. Resurrection releases until death comes undone, In the fire of His favor, in the passion of his love. There’s a rush and there’s a current, from the graces of his blood, That pulls you deep into the healing affections of the triune God. In the voice of Christ Jesus, in the draw of his embrace, There’s the fullest sweet dimension of the Father’s true face, There’s a movement, there’s a stirring, in the Spirit’s caress, The eternally regiving of the very first breath. Holiness is a playful dance, A fragrance that spills from the fields of delight. His splendor in embers of glass, So rooted in heaven, they fill the earth with His life. They fill the earth with His life. Nathan Partain, 2017

Song of Celebration “Lay Down to Rest” Ensemble

There is no one like Him, through the ages unmoved. In his infinite strength, in his unchanging good. In his virtue unmatched, while he answers to none. Yet in his purest self, He’s the fullness of love. Though our Father is fearsome, do not be afraid Though his power is frightening, he faithful remains. How his full heart is for you, his full strength to bless. In his shelter or almighty love, you can lay down to rest. Who compares to his grace, who looks after the small. Who inclines to the weak, and the poor when they call. Who would care for the liar, trade his life for a worm. Who would give up his son, to buy those of no worth. Though our Father is fearsome, do not be afraid Though his power is frightening, he faithful remains. How his full heart is for you, his full strength to bless. In his shelter or almighty love, you can lay down to rest. No evil can darken, no curse can withstand, Those Jesus engraved in the marks of his hands Our Father has proven, that he is for us. When his love and his power, converged on the cross. Though our Father is fearsome, do not be afraid Though his power is frightening, he faithful remains. How his full heart is for you, his full strength to bless. In his shelter or almighty love, you can lay down to rest. Nathan Partain, 2017

Departing Hymn “With All of Our Strength” All

Our life, no more owning, we were bought at a price Living not for our own will, but for you, our Lord Christ. We renounce each allegiance, race and national pride. We are now of the one true King, and His Kingdom of Light. So now where we find violence, we are called to defend. And where humiliation, we cover the offense. Where there is injustice, the weak is our cause. And wherever a debtor owes, we pay all of their cost. For to quench, in your name, those who thirst is to bring you a drink. And to care for the lonely and sick, is to tend to your need. As we mend and we make, as we serve and create, It’s the substance of praise we now sing. Lord, we love you, not just heart and soul but with all of our strength. Where there are young ones, we protect and hold dear. And where we have power, there we govern with fear. And where there needs labor, there the burdens we’ll bear. And where we find brokenness, we will work to repair. For to quench, in your name, those who thirst is to bring you a drink. And to care for the lonely and sick, is to tend to your need. As we mend and we make, as we serve and create, It’s the substance of praise we now sing. Lord, we love you, not just heart and soul but with all of our strength. Lord, we love you with all of our strength. Lord, we love you with all of our strength. Lord, we love you. So there is no effort, no errand too small. Each action a moment, to answer your call. So in every mercy and in all that we do, Is your love shown to others and our affections for you. We love you, we love you not just heart and soul but with all of our strength. Nathan Partain, 2016

Join our Mission: Church Planting We believe that communities built on the freedom and life of the gospel bring healing and flourishing to our city. This is why Redeemer exists. We need your help. We are trying to pay off our mortgage by March of 2018 in order to redirect the money we spend each year on our debt toward the good of the city through church planting. We think making church planting a regular part of our budget best builds our heart for the gospel to grow in Indy. How can you join us? • Engage: If we are going to do this together we need you to consider this mission, ask questions and figure out where your heart is as a part of this community. • Pray: Our mission to plant gospel-centered communities is too big and too fraught for us to move in our own strength or wisdom. We need to pray to the Lord to move through us in this city. • Give: We are trying to raise close to $400,000 by March of 2018. This will require everyone in our congregation to give, great and small.

Mortgage Payoff Details As of now, $231,444 has been given or pledged to the Church Planting fund, leaving a balance of $393,556 to be refinanced by March of 2018. If we do not pay this amount off, we will be committed to mortgage payments until 2022, hindering us from being financially ready to send out our next community. We will also waste $43,034 (11%) in fees and interest payments: money we think should be spent on the healing of our city. So our goal over these next few months is for all of us to engage this mission and consider how we can pool our resources to make this happen.

Our Values

Good to See You Again.

We are members of the Presbyterian Church of America and are a diverse community joined together by our faith. First and foremost, we exist as a church to honor and glorify God. We are broken people, messed up by sin, but we see the ways God works in and through people to heal and reweave the world. We invite you to come alongside us as we love God, live in community with each other, and serve the city.

You’ve been around, but there are so many ways to get plugged in that you’re not sure where to start. How about starting here? Give us your name and email, check some boxes, and drop this in the offering plate.

When Redeemer was planted in 1998, it was formed by a small community of people living in the surrounding urban neighborhoods. Because of this, our urban calling has always been at the heart of our DNA. We are grateful that over the years we have become a community that has broadened geographically. At the same time, this focus has only deepened as our church has grown.

EMAIL

Our mission is for the good of the Center Township of Indianapolis; what we refer to as the “city” and we feel called by God to focus our resources on ministering to these neighborhoods. No matter where you live or come from we hope that you will join us in caring for the common good of our city.
