Top Story CAM Software Market Leaders Named by CIMdata 2 June 2008 In the recently-released Version 17 of the NC Software and Related Services Market Assessment Report, consulting and research firm CIMdata Inc. named the worldwide CAM software market leaders for 2007 and projected those expected to be market leaders in 2008. For 2007, Dassault Systèmes was the market leader on the basis of both vendor revenues received and end-user payments for CAM software and services, CNC Software was the leader on the basis of industrial seats shipped, and Planit Holdings was the leader on the basis of industrial seats installed. SolidCAM was named as the most rapidly-growing vendor. Mr. Alan Christman, CIMdata Chairman and primary author of the report noted that, “Even though there have been a number of recent mergers and acquisitions, the CAM software market continues to be highly-fragmented and competitive. There is no single vendor or small group of vendors that dominate the worldwide market. CIMdata tracks approximately 50 CAM software vendors and the rankings in the Report each list 20-30 vendors, depending upon the category. The 2007 leading vendors on the basis of CAM software and services revenue received were Dassault Systèmes, Siemens PLM Software, PTC, Delcam, Planit Holdings, NDES (formerly Hitachi Zosen Systems), Tebis, Missler Software, Cimatron, and CNC Software. Dassault Systèmes and Siemens PLM Software were the clear leaders with double digit market shares and a combined market share of 27.9%. The remaining eight vendors in the top ten had a combined market share of 38.4% and the remainder of the vendors below the top ten had a combined market share of 33.7%. This data is shown in the following chart.

Page 3

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

2007 Market Share of the Largest NC Vendors at the Vendor Level

The 2007 top five vendors on the basis of CAM industrial seats shipped were CNC Software, Planit Holdings, Dassault Systèmes, Delcam, and PTC. The seat count rankings are significantly different than the vendor revenue rankings. For example, CNC Software was listed as the leading vendor on the basis of industrial seats shipped, but only the tenth-largest on the basis of vendor revenue received. Conversely, Siemens PLM Software was the second-largest vendor on the basis of revenue received, but fell out of the top five on the basis of industrial seats shipped. The changes in rankings are primarily due to the differences in level and breadth of product and associated software pricing among the vendors. The worldwide five most rapidly-growing CAM software vendors on the basis of revenue received in 2007, as compared to 2006, were SolidCAM, Cimatron, OPEN MIND, Missler Software, and Dassault Systèmes. SolidCAM, and Cimatron each achieved revenue growth in excess of 30% in 2007, as compared to 2006. Over the past five years, SolidCAM has been the consistent growth leader with annual growth rates in the 30% range. For 2008, CIMdata is projecting that the five most rapidlygrowing companies will be Cimatron, SolidCAM, Geometric Technologies, OPEN MIND, and Dassault Systèmes. The rapid growth of Cimatron in 2007 and 2008 is a combination of improved organic growth and the acquisitions of Microsystems in 2007 and Gibbs and Associates in 2008. CIMdata also did worldwide rankings based on brand name as well as by total vendor. In some cases, this made a significant difference as some vendors only offer products under one brand and some offer products under multiple brands. The multiple brands offered are typically the result of acquisitions and then maintaining the acquired product as a separate brand. For example, the five largest brands for industrial seats shipped in 2007 were CNC Software Mastercam, Dassault Systèmes CATIA, PTC Pro/ENGINEER, Siemens PLM Software NX, and Planit Holdings AlphaCAM. As such, CNC Software Mastercam was the leading brand on the basis of industrial seats shipped, whereas some vendors such as Planit Holdings and Delcam had their shipments spread over multiple brands. Other vendor rankings contained in Version 17 of the NC Market Assessment Report include those for the educational market, those based on revenue by geography and industry, those for verification and post-processing vendors, the total number of people in a company, product development, direct sales, and the number of resellers per company. Version 17 of the NC Software and Services Market Assessment Report is available for purchase by contacting CIMdata at +1 (734) 668-9922 or by emailing to [email protected].

CIMdata News CIMdata Presentation: PLM Return on Investment (ROI) 13 June 2008 Who: Ken Amann, CIMdata Director of Research Event: 2008 Greater China PLM Executive Summit When: June 13, 2008 Where: Kempinski Hotel in Dalian, China Topic: PLM Return on Investment (ROI) Click here to return to Contents Results: CIMdata Opinion Poll on the Most Important Criteria in Your Company’s PLM Evaluation & Selection Process 6 June 2008 In another sign that PLM is moving from the engineering department to the board room, more than 55% of the those responding to CIMdata’s latest opinion poll indicated that the most important criteria in their company’s PLM evaluation and selection process were the ability to address their process and business requirements. Coming in a second with approximately 18% were technology features and functions. In CIMdata’s experience this illustrates that more and more companies understand PLM’s business enabling characteristics and as a result fewer companies see these solutions as just an extension of a computer-aided design (CAD) system. Additionally, less than five percent (5%) indicated that the products and solution suppliers they currently work were an important criteria in their company’s new PLM evaluation and selection process. This would appear to indicate that an incumbent PLM solution supplier doesn’t have a significant edge in new competitive situations. This may reflect a willingness to change, dissatisfaction with the incumbent, or a potential underestimation of the effort/cost that could be required to migrate from a long-time established environment. Finally, it is important to note that just less than twelve percent (12%) indicated that the future vision and direction of the supplier played an important role. In CIMdata’s opinion this is somewhat disappointing and it may indicate that either today’s solution suppliers are doing a poor job communicating their vision and direction and its value to their customers or that industrial companies are too focused on today’s (short term) requirements – a situation that can have long term negative

Company News ARM, Renesas Technology and Synopsys Define Industry's First Low-Power Verification Methodology 3 June 2008 Synopsys, Inc. announced that it has collaborated with ARM and Renesas Technology to define the industry's first methodology to address the rapidly increasing complexity of low power verification. The companies are documenting the methodology in a new book titled "Verification Methodology Manual for Low Power Designs" (VMM-LP) that will enable rapid and broad deployment of industry best practices for comprehensive verification of low power designs. The new VMM-LP is based on the collective verification and IP experience of ARM, Renesas, and Synopsys, and builds on the methodology originally published in the proven "Verification Methodology Manual for SystemVerilog" book developed by ARM and Synopsys. The adoption of aggressive power management techniques has led to an increase in verification complexity, creating a need for a structured and reusable verification environment to achieve power goals and first-pass silicon success. The VMM-LP documents the common causes of low power bugs, provides rules and guidelines for low power verification, specifies a SystemVerilog base class library facilitating the setup of a reusable verification environment, and recommends assertions and coverage techniques to achieve comprehensive low power verification. The source code for the SystemVerilog base class library described in the VMM-LP book will be made available with VMM standard libraries and applications under the popular Apache 2.0 open source license. "In 2007, 2.9 billion ARM Powered® processors were shipped into the market. As a leading provider of low-power semiconductor IP, we recognize the need for a rigorous verification methodology for successful deployment and integration of that IP," said John Goodenough, worldwide director of design

Page 7

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary technology for the office of the CTO at ARM. "The Verification Methodology Manual for Low-Power Design helps address this need by capturing the collective expertise and methodologies of industry lowpower leaders across multiple market segments." "Comprehensive functional verification of our aggressively power-managed SoCs -- especially PMPtargeted devices containing tens of power states -- is a major engineering challenge. We believe the VMM-LP book will be a powerful tool in the hands of the chip verification community in achieving predictable verification closure of LP designs," said Santhosh Madathil, VLSI Design & Verification Practice Group head at Wipro Technologies. Low-power design techniques are used across electronic product market segments ranging from handhelds to enterprise servers. In addition to voltage-aware static and dynamic verification tools, such as MVSIM with VCS® and MVRC, which are part of the Eclypse™ low power solution from Synopsys, designers require a rigorous methodology to set up testbenches, generate test cases, attain coverage closure and pinpoint bugs using assertions. The VMM-LP methodology addresses these needs with guidelines, rules, assertions, coverage, and base classes based on proven industry best practices. "Our goal is to achieve first-pass silicon success for all of our power-managed designs," said Narayana L. Pidugu, senior director of the Hyderabad Design Center at Cypress Semiconductor. "Given our highly compressed development cycle, there is immense pressure on functional verification schedules. The methodology described in the VMM-LP is easily implemented by the MVSIM and MVRC low-power verification tools, which have already helped achieve our product development goals by enabling us to successfully deploy sophisticated power-management verification techniques in a consistent and reusable manner." "Low-power design techniques add an extra verification dimension to getting the product right the first time," said Hitoshi Sugihara, department manager of the DFM and Digital EDA Technology Development Dept. at Renesas Technology Corp. "We have successfully implemented the verification methodology for low power described in the VMM-LP book through our use of Synopsys' products. The VMM-LP methodology systematically outlines the best practices for low-power verification and will serve as a basic verification reference guide for Renesas." "Tools alone are not enough to address the verification challenges of multi-voltage techniques used in low-power designs," said Manoj Gandhi, senior vice president and general manager of the Verification Group at Synopsys. "Lack of a verification methodology for low power has created a significant void. We have collaborated with some of the low-power leaders in the industry by combining the verification expertise at ARM and Renesas to define a leading-edge, reusable methodology." About the VMM for Low Power The lead authors of the VMM-LP book are David Flynn, ARM fellow and co-author of the "Low Power Methodology Manual" (LPMM) [Springer]; Yoshio Inoue, chief engineer, Design Technology Division, Renesas Technology Corp.; Janick Bergeron, Synopsys fellow and moderator of the Verification Guild web site; and Srikanth Jadcherla, group director of Research and Development at Synopsys and founder of ArchPro Design Automation, Inc., which was acquired by Synopsys in 2007. The VMM-LP book defines a robust and scalable verification architecture that can be used to quickly setup and complete verification of low-power designs. The methodology will address all aspects of functional verification of power management functions, including suggestions for static versus dynamic verification, design-for-verification techniques, and use of assertions and coverage metrics to achieve rapid verification closure. Click here to return to Contents Avatech Solutions Launches New Manufacturing Consulting Services Group 5 June 2008 Avatech Solutions, Inc. announced the launch of the Avatech Consulting Services Group to meet the needs of the manufacturing sector. Trading on Avatech’s years of experience in engineering and design solutions, this new group will focus on providing process improvements that also impact client efficiencies outside of design and engineering. Benefits can extend enterprise-wide, affecting the shop floor, sales, purchasing, customer service, even suppliers—dramatically increasing profits. “New technology, in and of itself, is not enough,” said Scott Hale, vice president of the new consulting group for Avatech. “Improving and automating processes is often the key to achieving extraordinary productivity gains and lower costs. As technology evolves, however, many manufacturers find it hard to stay abreast of the best available advances and how to properly leverage them for the greatest time and cost savings across the entire company.” Hale continued, “Our consulting group will look beyond technology to create advantages for manufacturers that provide exponential time and efficiency gains. Our team thoroughly understands the key challenges regarding processes that manufacturers face. Team members have been pulled from a roster of Avatech experts who have a proven history of streamlining and automating processes that are nothing short of transformative. The new group will operate out of Avatech’s 18 existing offices across the country.” Avatech client SVI Trucks, a builder of fire, police, and multi-use emergency vehicles in Loveland, Colorado, wanted to speed delivery times and improve quality. “Avatech helped us integrate engineering, fabrication, and assembly processes, which allow us to build higher quality trucks in less time. The bottom line is that our customers receive better value and we are more efficient,” stated Dave Sargent, SVI’s engineering manager. “We have a long history of working with our clients to implement the latest design technology,” stated George Davis, president and CEO of Avatech Solutions. “With our new Consulting Services Group, we will be focusing sharply on clients’ business goals, while targeting processes in addition to technology. With global competition at a fever pitch, American manufacturers need these services more than ever to increase efficiency and control costs. All of us at Avatech see ourselves as partners with our customers in their innovation process, leading to increased market share and long-term corporate sustainability. “This initiative will directly support our stated objectives to leverage our deep talent pool and grow the

Click here to return to Contents Delcam Still on Top of CIMdata CAM Rankings 5 June 2008 Delcam continues to rank as the world’s leading specialist supplier of manufacturing software and services in the latest NC Software and Related Services Market Assessment from renowned US consulting and market research firm, CIMdata. The company increased its market share by achieving sales growth of 15% from 2006 to 2007, compared with an overall growth in vendor revenues of less than 8%. The report also confirmed that Delcam has the largest overall staff numbers devoted to CAM, including the largest CAM development team in the industry. Delcam’s Managing Director, Hugh Humphreys, was delighted with the results and claimed that they represented a clear validation of the company’s aggressive growth strategy. "For several years, we have aimed to build our company’s sales by diversifying outside our traditional market in the mould, tool and die sector and increasing our business in other areas, in particular in the automotive and aerospace sectors,” he commented. "We have achieved consistently above-average increases in sales through significant acquisitions, in particular, the FeatureCAM and PartMaker ranges of software, and through organic growth.” Mr. Humphreys also emphasised his company’s commitment to high levels of R & D investment as a key part of the company’s success. The CIMdata report states "over time one would expect the organization with the most resources to provide a greater breadth and depth of internally developed product” and Mr. Humphreys certainly supports this view. "Together, our complete set of CAM programs, PowerMILL, FeatureCAM, PartMaker and ArtCAM, comprises the world’s most comprehensive collection of machining software, giving us an unrivalled ability to provide solutions to all of a company’s programming needs,” he claimed. "This benefits larger companies, which can meet all of their CAM needs from a single supplier. At the same time, smaller companies can choose exactly the system they need for their particular combination of products and machine tools, rather than having to accept a compromise solution from a CAM supplier with a more limited range of software.” Mr. Humphreys is already confident of an even better showing in next year’s report. "We had our best quarter ever in the first three months of 2008,” he reported. "I am confident that this pattern will be repeated over the complete year.” Click here to return to Contents EVE Appoints Koji Iwagami General Manager of EVE K.K. 2 June 2008 EVE announced it has appointed Koji Iwagami to the position of general manager of EVE K.K., a wholly owned subsidiary based in Yokohama, Japan. CIMdata PLM Industry Summary Knowllence: the Design Common Guideline, i.e. How Can Methodological Tools Complete The Product/Process Data Repository (PDM) 14 May 2008 Knowllence organized a conference dealing with: “from geometry to PLM 2.0, the design common guideline”, that welcomed 75 attendees. The aim was to introduce the methodological tools completing the usual technical data management systems and launch the collaborative platform for system engineering: TDC System.

This conference started with the testimonies of Philippe Bergin and Philippe Raffoux from Schneider Electric (Innovation department - R&D Efficiency & Quality). Their mission is to define world class processes and roll out appropriate tools, so that the 7,000 designers know how to achieve their efficiency and design sturdiness goals. Within the Radar (Required Activities of Design* to Achieve Robustness) project, Schneider Electric successfully implements the TDC software in the fields of functional analysis (VoC - Voice of Customer) and risk mastering (FMEA), throughout the steps of the offer creation process, whilst remaining DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) compatible. Jean-François Prevéraud (chief-editor of GISI) then presented the evolution of the engineering and design departments’ needs and requirements. While the PLM lifecycle management progressively disseminates, it should nevertheless not be limited to 3D geometry. It is such a strategic decision to opt for PLM 2.0 and integrate customers into the heart of the design process. Thierry Beaujon, CEO, then introduced the Knowllence vision. Knowllence is a methodological solution integrator into PLM 2.0. In a changing and uncertain, multicultural and complex environment, supporting the product/process development process with proven methodologies is no longer an option. In complement to the existing PDMs, Knowllence launches TDC System (*), a system engineering platform: To model the processes and guide the designers through the use of appropriate software modules: need analysis, requirement management, risk analysis, TRIZ, systematic innovation, etc. To direct and connect the information from the capture tools (TDC Worksuite captures the relevant data…) and from the storage/protection tools. CIMdata PLM Industry Summary Implementation Investments Airbus to Deploy CæSAM Multi-Disciplinary Framework for A350 XWB Structural Analysis 5 June 2008 SAMTECH announced the decision made by Airbus to deploy its new trans-national Structure Analysis environment ISAMI. ISAMI is made of an exhaustive collection of harmonized sizing tools developed or selected by the Airbus methods team plugged into the CæSAM CAE enterprise integration framework. CæSAM is a commercial tool developed by SAMTECH and some of the methods call SAMCEF parameterized finite element models and solutions. The new platform ISAMI will be used by Airbus for the composite and metallic structural sizing of the A350 XWB. ISAMI which stands for "Improved Structure Analysis Multidisciplinary Integration" is the transnational harmonisation solution designed to meet the structural analysis challenge. The purpose of ISAMI is to integrate the AIRBUS aircraft structure analyses in one single Computer Aided Engineering framework where all the computation processes, methods, software tools and data are fully embedded. The CAE multi-disciplinary framework CæSAM developed by SAMTECH was chosen by Airbus to be this single structure analysis framework supporting element/brick/stone/arm of the ISAMI project. “The A350 XWB is the first opportunity to use CæSAM industrially”, says Eric Carnoy, SAMTECH CEO. “By selecting our CAE framework CæSAM to tackle its important challenge in Aircraft Structural Analysis and in bringing Virtual Testing for aircraft certification to the front line, Airbus demonstrates once again its confidence and trust in SAMTECH. It strengthens the long term partnership that was initiated more than 20 years ago around the metallic and composite structural analysis capabilities of our SAMCEF FEA, solutions, non coincidentally part of ISAMI too”. About CæSAM CæSAM, (an acronym for "Computer Aided Engineering by SAMTECH") is a complete suite designed to go significantly further on the deployment and automation of capitalized Multi- Disciplinary analysis processes based on numerical simulation tools. Knowledge Management and Extended Enterprise The encapsulation of skills and knowledge into engineering Processes that combine and chain multiple Analysis tools is a natural way to ensure the re-usability and knowledge sharing, inside or outside a company while protecting its IPR. The analyst experts of the company (named hereafter “authors”) can autonomously build and document their own simulation process, involving commercial software, inhouse codes, but also re-engineered algorithms with the CæSAM development toolkit. This includes any kind of simulation, from simple analytic formulas to complex FE models, for whom advanced capabilities (pre- and post- processing, exchange...) are provided. Multi-Disciplinary Integration Platform and Up-to-Date Technology CæSAM offers an open architecture, mostly based on a plug-in approach and on programming standards such as JAVA, XML, SQL queries, Python. The core of this open architecture is a common “Analysis Model” created by the experts of the company and shared by all across the relevant disciplines.

Page 25

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary This architecture allows to work either linked to the in-house SDM (Simulation Data Management) or in stand-alone mode, making possible to use it in the early design stages and/or by off-line subcontractors. EFD.Pro is a Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire-embedded Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software tool and is used by design engineers interested in understanding flow and heat transfer in their products. “It is very important to us to use EFD.Pro on a more regular basis” said Johan van der Kamp, chief design engineer. “But we are not analysis specialists and we do not know the full potential of what the technology can do for us.” To facilitate a successful transfer of “CFD know-how” from one department to the next, the Bronswerk engineering team has recruited two college students. Bas Bovenkamp and Willert Boevee, who will be graduating with mechanical engineering degrees in June from the prominent Windesheim School of Engineering and Design in the Netherlands, are working on this project as a part of their undergraduate coursework. “So far we have found EFD.Pro quite easy. You don’t need to be an expert at CFD; however, you need to be familiar with the item being studied” said Bovenkamp and Boevee. Bronswerk is a leading designer and manufacturer of heat exchangers (shell & tube and air-cooled), condensers, heaters, blowers, compressors and fans. Their products are used in the pharmaceutical, process and oil/gas industries by such notable organizations as Shell, Bayer, Philips and Nestle. Last year EFD.Pro was instrumental in the design and verification of a series of ground-breaking air-cooled coolers and fans. Having seen the successful use of CFD technology in their R&D department, Bronswerk was keen on using the technology for everyday engineering. To start the process, Bovenkamp and Boevee started to work on several examples based on flow through tubes to understand the full power of the software. A large proportion of the heat exchanger market consists of the tube-type heat exchanger. Tube heat exchangers are preferred for various applications due to availability of historical performance data and the range of temperature and pressure which they can withstand. “Tubes are deceptively simple-looking on the surface; however, flow through tube bundles can be very complex as the fluid may experience both laminar and turbulent regimes. When you add heat transfer to the equation then the problem becomes even more complex” said Boevee. “We have created a fair number of visualization plots as a result of these tests. They help us see what is really happening inside these tubes. It’s a great insight when you are able to see under which conditions the flow changes or when laminar flow becomes turbulent and how quickly” added Bovenkamp. As a by-product of this research, Boevee and Bovenkamp have created a “how-to” manual for the engineering team. This manual offers step-by-step instructions on how to use EFD.Pro for specific projects. “As EFD.Pro is a general purpose CFD tool, it has a lot of functionalities. Our range of applications is quite well defined so we wanted to create a handbook that would guide our engineers without having to get up a steep learning curve every time we want to work on a project” said Van der

"We’re able to work on really short lead times. That’s where we generally outperform bigger companies. People come straight to me and I can get machining started almost immediately if they are really under pressure,” says Mr. Hawkins. Redline, which is based in Prosperity, South Carolina, specialises in machining prototypes and one-of-akind parts. Over the past thirteen years, the company has followed a path of slow and steady growth with a primary focus on quality and customer service. Starting with only a few manual machines, brothers Tim and Mark Hawkins have steadily increased their machining capabilities and added employees to keep pace with customer demand. Tim Hawkins, who runs the machine shop, enjoys the challenge of working on something different with every order. "Our biggest strength is our ability to adapt to the needs of the customer, no matter what. We never know what we’ll be doing two days in a row and that’s the way we like to keep it. We do a lot of prototype work and that’s what we’re good at,” states Mr. Hawkins. Almost five years ago, Redline purchased a 3-axis Bridgeport CNC milling machine to increase productivity, together with a copy of FeatureCAM 2D CAM software. Impressed with FeatureCAM’s powerful capabilities and ease of use, Redline decided to upgrade to FeatureMILL2.5D for regular production work and FeatureMILL3D for cutting more complex surfaces. Last year, a good customer needed parts produced for extrusion dies. The dies had intricate details and small radii that made the work impossible on a mill. When the customer said that he’d keep them busy if Redline could produce good parts, Mr. Hawkins looked at wire EDM to cut the deep narrow slots and complex profiles. He purchased a Charmilles Robofil 290P along with FeatureWIRE software to run it. Despite having no previous experience running or programming a wire EDM, Mr. Hawkins was cutting parts on his Robofil in less than two weeks. In less than six months, the Robofil had logged over a thousand hours and generated enough income from EDM work to pay for itself. "With FeatureWIRE, I just taught myself,” claimed Mr. Hawkins. "It was so similar to the milling packages that I picked up on it right away. Even the 4-axis programming was pretty much selfexplanatory through the prompts that pop up on the screen as you progress through the programming procedure. I’ve been doing some 4-axis burns that are probably just as complicated as you could get.” Click here to return to Contents

IC Compiler was recently used to complete a hierarchical chip design that contained 4.5-million instances running at 700 megahertz

Page 34

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary (MHz). Additional stringent criteria included high-performance timing optimization, low power, hierarchical design support and fastest time with highest quality of results (QoR). "Our market environments are fast-moving and demanding, where time-to- market can be the difference between success and failure," said MediaTek. "Synopsys' IC Compiler demonstrated that it can meet the design requirements we need to deliver a high-quality product as quickly as possible. Our intent is to move toward a concurrent hierarchical design flow." MediaTek decided to do the design hierarchically to speed turnaround time. IC Compiler's hierarchical design takes a "divide and conquer" approach that allows several blocks to be implemented and optimized simultaneously instead of sequentially. This technique also allows engineering change orders (ECOs) to be applied much faster. At the top level, IC Compiler utilizes smart hierarchical modeling technology, a technique that uses an abstract version of a block instead of a detailed block to expedite physical design while preserving interface circuitry so that optimizations can be applied across all blocks. This approach yields similar results as the fully-instantiated model- less flow, but has the advantage of a much faster turnaround time while achieving excellent correlation with the PrimeTime® sign-off solution. In addition, MediaTek achieved high correlation between hierarchical models and flat models. "IC Compiler delivers significant productivity advantages for customers like MediaTek who put a premium on time-to-results," said Antun Domic, senior vice president and general manager, Synopsys Implementation Group. "IC Compiler's hierarchical design capability combined with the highest QoR in the industry enables design teams to shave weeks off their design schedules." About IC Compiler IC Compiler is Synopsys' comprehensive physical design solution. It provides results by extending physical synthesis to full place-and-route, and by enabling signoff-driven design closure. Older solutions have a limited horizon because placement, clock tree, and routing are separate, disjointed operations. IC Compiler's XPS technology breaks down the walls between these steps by extending physical synthesis to full place-and-route. IC Compiler has a unified, TCL-based architecture that implements innovations and harnesses some of Synopsys' best core technologies. The first in the new Z Series premium line of

Page 52

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary multi-ply cutting systems, the Z7 is engineered to meet the demands and business challenges of manufacturers in many industries including automotive, aerospace and apparel. GERBERcutter Z7 combines precision with efficiency to consistently cut the most demanding materials to the tightest of tolerances. It maximizes throughput and yield while cutting intricate shapes, multiplehole sizes and notches with high accuracy across a full range of material types and thicknesses, including bi-laminate foams, technical textiles and high-loft fabrics. The Z7 is designed to help manufacturers meet continuous improvement initiatives and pressures within the supply chain for quality and turn time with more stringent requirements for reporting of performance metrics. With environmental concerns and energy consumption regulations mounting, a key value to the Z7’s design is its increased efficiency and reduced power usage. “The voices of our customers were the driving force behind the features and functionalities of the Z7,” said Ron Ellis, product manager, Multi-Ply Cutters & Control Systems. As a component of Gerber’s “Voice of the Customer” (VOC) product development process, members of a cross-functional team met with companies in the Americas, Europe and Asia to interview and observe them. “Through our VOC work, our team identified solutions to needs that even our customers didn’t realize existed, just by virtue of our process. To see these features and functionalities in production today is really rewarding, and is a testament to the insight and expertise that comes from being in the business for 40 years,” added Ellis. A key requirement for cut part quality is material stability. The Z7’s hardware and software systems were designed to work together to ensure piece-to-piece and bite-to-bite accuracy. Gerber’s CutWorks® cut path optimization software, digitally-controlled variable vacuum regulation, advanced electronics and a new conveyor design enable material to convey while under precise vacuum levels throughout the cutting process. Depending on the application, an integrated clamp bar is available for conveying material when not under vacuum. “We’re particularly proud of CutWorks and the engineers behind it,” said Ellis. “This software ties together and automates so many critical functionalities and provides a great deal of benefit to our customers as it relates to quality, ease of use, repeatability and throughput.” CutWorks Cut Path Optimization software automatically maximizes throughput and material yield by calculating the most efficient cut path and part nest. In addition, buffer management functionality maximizes material yield. CutWorks files can be saved and programmed as QuickSets, which enable operators to quickly and accurately set up jobs. The Quick Change Drill feature allows operators to change drill bits in seconds -- without tools. CutWorks automatically prompts the operator when a change is required and informs the operator of the required bit size. This feature can be done mid-job, saving minutes per cut file, and minimizing down time for maintenance. The Z-Series features Knife IntelligencePLUS™, specially-developed software that anticipates knife deflection and automatically compensates to prevent it. This ensures accurate cuts from top ply to bottom and produces superior quality circles and notches to very tight tolerances. This feature enables more holes to be cut rather than drilled, which yields as much as a 10 percent improvement in throughput for hole cuts. A growing challenge in many cutting rooms is operator turnover, because it affects both quality and throughput when operators are inexperienced. With this in mind, Gerber designed the Z7 to be easy to use. It features an intuitive touch-screen interface and software that accommodates preprogrammed cut files and machine settings, and provides easy access to job information. These features dramatically Page 53

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary reduce setup times, operator learning curve and margin for error to ensure repeatable and predictable process control. Powerful reporting capabilities make it easy to measure throughput and meet customer information and vendor compliance requirements. “We observed that many customers must rely on simple spreadsheets in order to quantify throughput and yield. With these new reporting capabilities, we aim to help our customers offer more value to their customers as it relates to tracking performance metrics,” said Ellis. “Reporting capabilities are becoming more and more important, especially for companies who are vendors in lean or six-sigma-focused industries such as aerospace and automotive,” he added. Click here to return to Contents Intergraph® SmartPlant® Foundation 2008 Offers Unique Engineering Collaboration Platform 4 June 2008 Intergraph® has released SmartPlant® Foundation 2008 with significant new engineering collaboration capabilities. "Domain" technology allows multiple disciplines to concurrently work on shared engineering subject matter. Intergraph's customers who partnered in the design of SmartPlant Foundation 2008 have indicated that this multiple domain approach has the potential to improve their business performance. Reduction in

Page 58

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary overall time, increase in cross–discipline quality and reliability of execution are the effects of this engineering collaboration platform. Domain technology supports modern engineering data management practice overcoming many of the artificial IT limitations common today. Conventional PDM/PLM technologies lock engineering content deep inside multiple files, thereby hiding the detailed cross-discipline changes. Conversely, data warehouse technologies expose all data and force users to deal with "data overwrites" from other disciplines before they are ready to re–synchronize their own application data. With SmartPlant Foundation's new "Domain" technology, each discipline's content is isolated from change by others while available to all, and without the need for it all to be initially consistent. Intergraph refers to this as "managed inconsistency," and it reflects the true engineering processes used today, harmonizing the opposite forces of innovation and change with those of quality and consistency. SmartPlant Foundation's powerful information domain comparison tools provide rapid identification of these data inconsistencies, allowing subject matter experts to analyze cross-discipline information and determine the ideal engineering solution, ultimately supporting the synchronization of consistent information between many applications. Japan's Chiyoda Corp., an international engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company, collaborated with Intergraph to conceive the concept of independent engineering domains. "Chiyoda is stepping up its efforts to become the ‘Reliability No. 1' project company," said Takashi Kubota, president and chief executive officer, Chiyoda. "Chiyoda's principal engineering information management system, ‘i-PLANT21' is a key to achieve it. Intergraph solutions play a major role in iPLANT21. "In 2002, Chiyoda and Intergraph together started working on the i-SPF project, which focused on global concurrent engineering," Kubota said. "We are quite pleased to have worked directly with Intergraph and to contribute directly to the design of SmartPlant Foundation 2008. The new Domain feature of SmartPlant Foundation 2008 introduces truly advanced integration capabilities that open the door for enterprise integration and life cycle information management." Celebrating its 10th year in the market, with 200 customers worldwide, SmartPlant Foundation 2008 is an engineering information management system, an engineering document management system, an engineering data warehouse, an application integration hub and an information portal – all in one. Now EPCs and owner operators can identify and manage the change of data across the engineering enterprise, ensuring that decisions are based on correct facts (or more appropriately, the best available information while understanding the discrepancies), reducing their exposure to error, risk and hence cost. "SmartPlant Foundation 2008 delivers the capabilities that modern projects need, while creating a path for long term life cycle management of the information," said Patrick Holcomb, executive vice president, Intergraph Process, Power & Marine. "Engineering is a volatile, iterative, negotiated set of transactions where disciplines release data to each other concurrently to meet ever shortening milestones, comparing and driving out inconsistencies in the design along the way. With SmartPlant Foundation's multiple domains, engineers now have the control they need to allow them to do what they do best — make intelligent engineering decisions based on up–to–date, trustworthy information." Also included in the release of SmartPlant Foundation 2008 are three other major new capabilities — Concurrent Engineering, Progress and SmartPlant Foundation Web Portal: • Concurrent Engineering allows owner operators to execute multiple projects simultaneously on the same plant items and associated documentation, and then consolidate changes into the as-built record of Page 59

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary the plant. • Progress provides a status and rollup reporting of engineering completeness – planned, actual and forecast. It delivers a level of feedback to planners and schedulers necessary to allow for re-planning to meet project deadlines – the first real step to program management for engineering projects • SmartPlant Foundation Web Portal provides access to engineering information via a project rolebased portal interface – such as provided by Microsoft SharePoint®, without the need for any native desktop tools to be used by the remote user. Full access and security control are maintained without intellectual assets being exposed to unauthorized users. These capabilities help to consistently manage data across the enterprise — for EPCs they ensure that the integrity of their data or intellectual property is not lost, and for owner operators they allow for multiple modifications without planning shutdowns or interrupting day-to-day business operations. Click here to return to Contents New Summer ’08 Release Expands Core Arena PLM Functionality to Facilitate Better Designs, Decisions, and Products 5 June 2008 Arena Solutions announced the launch of its new Arena PLM Summer ’08 release filled with improvements in every area of the product, with specific emphasis on change management and visibility. Summer ’08 solidifies Arena PLM as the epicenter of the product development environment and boosts customers’ ability to leverage the “single version of the truth” managed in the system. With new tools to push that truth—the centralized, revision-controlled product record—further upstream and downstream throughout the extended enterprise, companies can create superior designs, make smarter decisions, and build better products. New features added to Arena PLM’s change management platform let companies close the loop in the change process from the earliest stages of design to the final phases of production. For example, the new Arena PLM EDA (Electronic Design Automation) Adapter pushes the latest approved component data directly back into the electronic design environment, so the right parts are designed in from the start. With this integration, design and engineering groups can access constantly updated component information (such as preferred parts, descriptions, parametric information, symbols, footprints, and datasheets) from within their design environment. The EDA integration solution includes all necessary configuration tools and works with Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics’ DxDesigner and DxDataBook, and Cadence’s OrCAD Capture CIS, among others. “We’ve been testing the beta version of the EDA Adapter and can already see the integration between our EDA software and Arena PLM is a significant benefit. It helps our engineering and manufacturing teams stay in better sync. The tools are easy to use, accessible to everyone, and the integration is

Page 62

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary seamless,” said Andy Aiello, chief operating officer, OpenPeak, Inc. “With the EDA Adapter, our electrical engineers can work with the big picture in mind, integrating approved data into our latest PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) designs from the start. It certainly stands to make our entire process easier and more efficient.” The Arena PLM Summer ’08 release also features important new functionality for managing change implementation, enabling the entire manufacturing team—both in-house and outsourced—to document steps taken to roll out approved changes and report current product status. This capability eliminates guesswork throughout the product development process by closing the loop between intended and accomplished change, allowing complete visibility into the implementation process, and situating everything about any given change in one central, accessible location. This increased feedback boosts companies’ confidence in their products, allowing them to know, without a doubt, that change happened the way it was intended. “We are very enthusiastic about the Summer ’08 release and the new improvements that have been added. Specifically, the change implementation functionality will give us access to important feedback, so we know exactly which steps have been taken toward accomplishing product changes and have a clear understanding about the status of our products in development,” said Omar Ahsan, senior vice president of operations of Desktop Factory. “Major enhancements to Arena PLM, like those we previewed in the Summer ’08 release, make it easier for us to deliver our 3D printers on time and on budget, and further blow away our competition. It is yet another reminder about how much we value this service and how critical it is to our business.” The Summer ’08 release also includes features that give customers greater flexibility in how they view information and greater control over how they interact with suppliers. In addition, the application is full of visibility and productivity enhancements that support better decision-making earlier in the product development process. Some of these enhancements include: The ability to mark files as private and keep them confidential from suppliers, which is the most requested feature by customers. This gives customers a finer degree of access control and greater confidence in their collaboration with suppliers. Multiple custom BOM (bill of materials) views, which enhance customers’ ability to customize Arena PLM according to the way they want to capture and organize information. More list panels—pop-up windows that display information from other areas of the application— throughout Arena PLM, which make it easier for users to get the information they need without navigating away from a page in which they are currently engaged. “The fact that we’ll be able to mark files as private is extremely positive for us. It allows us to save a chunk of time by streamlining our current process,” added Ahsan of Desktop Factory. “One of the prevailing discussions we have with our customers is around change. They know that change happens. We know that change happens. Change is a reality when you’re constantly innovating, working with distributed teams, and partnering with suppliers around the world. It can be extremely painful—and very expensive—without the right controls,” said Craig Livingston, chief executive officer of Arena Solutions. “The enhancements in our Summer ’08 release further establish Arena PLM as the epicenter of the product development process and the place where change is managed. These improvements enable customers to push product information upstream and downstream more efficiently and with more confidence and control than ever before.”
