CIRCLE OF CARE FACILITATORS Position Type: Contract, fee for service payment based in Ottawa Position Summary: Are you a motivated individual with a passion for working with the Aboriginal community? Do you have direct experience working with urban First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis communities? Do you have experience with dispute resolution or mediation? If so, this opportunity is for you! The First Nations, Inuit and Métis community service agencies in Ottawa, in partnership with The Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa (CASO), has developed a culture-based model of conflict resolution for Aboriginal families involved with CASO. The goal of the Circle of Care Program is to include care givers in the planning and decision making process in regards to the care of the child. The First Nations, Inuit and Métis community-based service agencies in Ottawa and the CASO are interested in building a pool of facilitators from each of the Aboriginal cultures. These Facilitators will be on a roster and matched with each of the referrals by the Circle of Care Coordinator. Their role is to identify and organize the needs of the families who have been referred to the Circle of Care. Circle of Care will be arranged and conducted by a Facilitator who is an independent party to child protection matters. Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Circle of Care Coordinator, the Facilitators will follow the following process:

Coordinator contacts Facilitator on client referral Facilitator contacts client & Children’s Aid Society Ottawa (CASO) Facilitator sets up in-person meeting with client Facilitator contacts CASO Frontline Worker Facilitator determines who to involve in the process with the client and contacts invited participants Facilitator contacts the Circle of Care Coordinator on family needs Facilitator provides monthly reports Facilitator schedules the Circle with the client Facilitator contacts CASO on the safety-action plan Facilitator contacts service providers and resource people Facilitator contacts the Circle of Care Coordinator on logistics of the circle Facilitator leads the Circle and wraps up Circle of Care plan Facilitator consults with Coordinator on any needs as they arise during the Circle Facilitator follows up with client Facilitator consults with CASO and service providers Facilitator finalizes Circle of Care Plan with family Facilitator submits summary reports

Qualifications The Circle of Care Facilitator must have the following qualifications: • • • • • • • • •

Must be Aboriginal (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) Traditional language speaker a plus Front-line experience working with Aboriginal people; Demonstrated success in facilitating dispute resolution, mediation and/or conflict resolution processes; Problem-solving and negotiation skills. Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities working with urban Aboriginal families; Knowledge of Aboriginal experience of colonization, Human Rights and the role of child protection. Knowledge of cultural differences in communication (verbal and non-verbal); Knowledge of Aboriginal culture and how it can be incorporated into a Circle process.
