Program Objectives: Life Saving Victoria is dedicated to developing the next generation of leaders and believes that 18-25 year old members hold the key to the growth of aquatic education and training. As a result, Life Saving Victoria (LSV) has developed a unique youth program known as the Building Leaders Scholarship. The Building Leaders Scholarship aims to engage and empower the youth demographic by providing meaningful leadership development, specialised training and the opportunity to access advanced skills and knowledge under the guidance of mentors from lifesaving, business and the community. The Building Leaders Scholarship will attract, motivate and train youth volunteers from LSV and other community organisations over a six month period. Scholars will benefit from exposure to international lifesaving practices, training, unique cultural experiences, knowledge building and opportunities to utilise and further develop skills learnt during the program. Scholar Information: The Building Leaders Scholarship is a unique and innovative professional development program and is the pinnacle of LSV's Leadership Pathway. This program will provide scholars with opportunities to excel both personally and professionally through meaningful workshops, advanced leadership development and specialised training. Core leadership competencies will be established under the guidance of experts from lifesaving, business and the community; exposing scholars to state wide professional and personal networks and highlighting the prospects available if they wish to seek and peruse leadership roles in the future. The Building Leaders Scholarship program culminates with a ten day trip to Sri Lanka. During this trip scholars will gain exposure to international lifesaving practices and training and unique cultural experiences.

Who Can Apply? Scholar applicants should be:      

Active Victorian members of Life Saving Victoria, aged between 18- 25 years Committed to full participation in the program, including the overseas trip Able to work independently, or as part of a team Able to demonstrate innovative thinking and take a proactive approach Skilled in communication and have highly developed interpersonal skills Driven to take up a leadership position within lifesaving and/or the wider community

Prerequisites: Applicants are required to hold either Stream 1 or Stream 2 prerequisites (or both).

There may be opportunities to gain desirable awards throughout the scholarship training

How Much Will It Cost? The total cost of participating in this program is $750; inclusive of the trip to Sri Lanka. The Scholarship will cover all leadership and technical training workshops; plus economy airfares, travel insurance, visas, hotel accommodation and meals for each participant in Sri Lanka. LSV will invoice each successful scholar $750. It’s up to each individual scholar as to whether they seek sponsorship from their club or an alternative community organisation. Commitment: The Scholarship program will consist of 4 double weekends (Saturday & Sunday) and two single weekend sessions which will take place from March to July, with the 10 day overseas trip occurring in July. The program concludes with a single weekend day of workshops in August. Successful scholars will be expected to attend and participate in all program components and sessions; including participating in a Public Relations event and being available to travel overseas. After the Sri Lanka overseas training component, participants are required to submit a Reflection Report and conduct a board presentation regarding their program learnings and attend a final program day of workshops.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Complete the application form, which is accessible at:

In this application form, applicants are required to submit their CV, club endorsement, passport photo and application cover letter addressing the selection criteria outlined below to Life Saving Victoria by 11:59pm on Sunday, 29 January 2017. 

Selection Criteria: Applicants are required to submit an Application Cover Letter and their current CV. Requirements for application cover letter and CV are listed below. 

Application Cover letter Please note applications must be accompanied by an Application Cover letter. The Application Cover letter should be written as a narrative (explaining ideas and details in relation to the goals of the program) and should express the necessary information more easily than letters that are structured as lists. Applicants should read the information available about the program and include the following:   

Outline why candidates would like to be involved in the Building Leaders Scholarship (BLS); Explain why they would be a valuable member of the team; and Explain how they would address the challenges of the program.

If applicants believe they possess relevant skills or attributes outside of these domains they are encouraged to explain their relevance in the Application Cover letter. Application letters should be addressed to Kate McLauchlan – Manager, Membership & Leadership Development, Life Saving Victoria. 

Curriculum Vitae The CV should provide a snapshot of relevant skills and experience for the program. The BLS is particularly interested in:  strong history of delivering outcomes,  planning and leading work teams,  academic and workplace qualifications (please attach a list of all lifesaving awards - this can be obtained by logging into your Members Portal account https://portal.sls.com.au; - you may need to register and set up a login to access this information) and past leadership positions. When constructing their CV, applicants should include a brief description of the actual roles and responsibilities they have undertaken in each of their previous positions. It is also advisable they think broadly about leadership experience. Many leadership positions are not formal or may not have an actual title attached to them - the BLS is happy to hear about these.

Applications will be graded on:  reasons for applying for the program;  relevant past experience;  meeting program prerequisites; and  involvement in lifesaving and the swim safety movement. Selection Process     

A selection panel will short list applicants and contact those successful at obtaining an interview by Friday 3 February 2017 Short list applicants will be required to attend a group interview on one of the following date: Saturday February 11 (9:15am- 3:30pm) Successful group applicants will be notified by Monday, 13 February 2017 on their success of obtaining a one on one interview One-on-one interviews will take place on one of the following dates: between Thursday16 to Thursday 23 February 2017 Successful applications will be informed of their selection into the scholarship program by Thursday 9 March 2017
