Cities, Towns and Organizations Receive More than $8 million in Tribal Gaming Grants Recipients of the 12 percent grants celebrated for their work and anticipated partnership in 2017 Scottsdale, Ariz.—Nov. 29, 2016— The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) and the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC), announce the names of the upcoming year’s 12 percent Tribal Gaming Grant partners. To date, both tribes combined have distributed nearly $90 million to cities, towns, and organizations through the 2002 Tribal-State Gaming compacts. This year’s recipients represent a wide range of programs and services that are delivered in almost every city and town across Arizona. Representatives from the more than 100 organizations, comprising the 2016-2017 Tribal Gaming Grants partners, gathered at Talking Stick Resort on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 for a celebratory luncheon highlighting their service in the community before an audience of their peers and many local leaders including Gilbert Mayor, Jenn Daniels; Tempe Mayor, Mark Mitchell; Scottsdale Mayor, Jim Lane; Mesa Mayor John Giles; Apache Junction Mayor Jon Insalaco; Town of Fountain Hills Mayor, Linda Kavanagh; and Coolidge Mayor Jon Thompson. They also heard a pre-recorded message from Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, who expressed his thanks to the elected leaders from around the state who were in the audience for their willingness to partner with tribal communities in the distribution of gaming grants because “this is how the tribal state gaming compacts should work.” This year’s event theme “United in Giving” is a representation of the collective efforts of the tribal communities, local agencies and organizations working together to make Arizona stronger. “I am always inspired when grantees share stories of how tribal gaming grant dollars are put to use,” said Delbert W. Ray, Sr., President, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. “While each group has a unique mission, from preventing child abuse, to helping veterans to protecting animals, and much more, they all face the same financial pressures. We value their partnership and the opportunity to support their efforts.” GRIC Gov. Stephen R. Lewis called the grants a point of pride for the Community and an affirmation of how tribal gaming helps every Arizona resident. "The establishment of the grant system by the tribal gaming compacts has guaranteed that tribal governmental gaming in Arizona will help virtually every corner of our state and its more than 6 million residents,” said Governor Lewis. These $4 million in gaming grants reach well beyond the reservation to communities that depend on us for much-needed resources. “Whether it's education programs for young children, new protective gear for cops and fire fighters, or supporting programs for at-risk youth, the elderly and our Veterans, the Gila River Indian Community stands committed to being a solid partner for our neighboring communities."
