The over-arching goal of this NIBIB-NICHD R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs. This FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on: o Courses for Skills Development: For example, courses and programs that address innovative and/or ground-breaking developments in Biomedical Engineering, multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary education, the regulatory pathway and other issues related to the commercialization of medical devices, and the immersion of engineering students in a clinical environment. This FOA mainly targets undergraduate students, but participants may also include first-year graduate students. Courses and programs that are open to and/or allow students from different departments and disciplines to work on design projects in collaboration with Biomedical Engineering students are especially encouraged.

Research education programs may complement ongoing research training and education occurring at JHU, but the proposed educational experiences must be distinct from those training and education programs currently receiving Federal support. R25 programs may augment institutional research training programs (e.g., T32, T90) but cannot be used to replace or circumvent Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) programs. Total salary costs requested may not exceed $5,000 annually. Expenses for foreign travel are not allowed. Mentors must be committed to continue their involvement throughout the total period of the mentee’s participation in this award.
